Granulicatella adiacens and Abiotrophia defectiva are an increasingly recognized cause of osteoarticular infections. We describe two cases of G. adiacens and one case of A. defectiva native vertebral osteomyelitis (NVO) and review all published cases. We developed a new molecular tool based on rpoB gene (encoding the beta subunit of RNA polymerase) sequencing to identify streptococci. We first sequenced the complete rpoB gene for Streptococcus anginosus, S. equinus, and Abiotrophia defectiva. BACKGROUND: Infective endocarditis (IE) caused by Abiotrophia (ABI) and Granulicatella (GRA) species is poorly studied. This work aims to describe and compare the main features of ABI and GRA IE.

BACKGROUND: Abiotrophia (ABI) and Granulicatella (GRA) are rare causative pathogens in infective endocarditis (IE). BACKGROUND: Henoch-Schonlein purpura is the most common vasculitis in childhood, usually triggered by an upper respiratory tract infection and rarely observed in infective endocarditis patients. Abiotrophia defectiva is a rare causative agent of infective endocarditis associated with pre-existing heart disease, immunocompromised and prosthetic valves. Dental procedures are also a common predisposing factor.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present the first pediatric congenital heart disease case of infective endocarditis caused by Abiotrophia defectiva combined with recurrent Henoch-Schonlein purpura.
