Introduction of African swine fever (ASF) to China in mid-2018 and the subsequent transboundary spread across Asia devastated regional swine production, affecting live pig and pork product-related markets worldwide. To explore the spatiotemporal spread of ASF in China, we reconstructed possible ASF transmission networks using nearest neighbour, exponential function, equal probability, and spatiotemporal case-distribution algorithms. From these networks, we estimated the reproduction numbers, serial intervals, and transmission distances of the outbreak. The mean serial interval between paired u

Biomedical advances in healthcare and antiretroviral treatment or therapy (ART) have transformed HIV/AIDS from a death sentence to a manageable chronic disease. Studies demonstrate that people living with HIV who adhere to antiretroviral therapy can achieve viral suppression or undetectability, which is fundamental for optimizing health outcomes, decreasing HIV-related mortality and morbidity, and preventing HIV transmission. African, Caribbean, and Black (ACB) communities in Canada remain structurally disadvantaged and bear a disproportionate burden of HIV despite biomedical advancements in H

BACKGROUND: Although the association between human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and mucocutaneous diseases has been well studied within South African specialist centres, there is limited data from district-level hospitals. Available data may, therefore, fail to reflect the prevalence and full spectrum of dermatoses seen in people living with HIV (PLWH).
OBJECTIVES: To determine the prevalence and spectrum of dermatoses seen in PLWH.
METHOD: We conducted a cross-sectional, descriptive study of 970 PLWH (men and women, ≥ 18 years old) accessing care at Karl Bremer Hospital, a district-level ho

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) transmission rates are exceptionally high in endemic TB settings. Adolescence represents a period of increasing TB infection and disease but little is known as to where adolescents acquire TB infection. We explored the relationship between residential exposure to adult TB cases and infection in children and adolescents in a South African community with high burdens of TB and HIV.
METHODS: TB infection data were obtained from community, school-based tuberculin skin test (TST) surveys performed in 2006, 2007 and 2009. A subset of 2007 participants received a repeat

Children with sickle-cell disease are at great risk of serious infections and early mortality. Our Review investigates the association between sickle-cell disease and invasive bacterial disease among populations in Africa. We systematically searched published work extracted data on pneumonia, meningitis, and bacteraemia by sickle-cell disease status. Most studies identified lacked a control group and did not use best laboratory methods for culturing fastidious bacteria. Only seven case-control or case-cohort studies provided data on the association between invasive bacterial disease and sickle

BACKGROUND: South Africa's divide between the public and private healthcare sectors has implications for healthcare access and quality of life (QoL) outcomes. This exploratory study aimed to identify the types of treatments used by people with Parkinson's disease (PWPD) in two different healthcare settings (public and private), and their perception of treatment satisfaction. Additionally, this study compared the QoL experienced between these healthcare settings, and investigated whether the number of treatments, internet access and income level were associated with QoL.
METHODS: Cross-section

INTRODUCTION: Poor healthcare outcomes from cardiovascular disease (CVD) have prompted a shift towards measuring patient-reported outcomes (PROs) to improve quality of care. We conducted a scoping review of the current use of PRO measures (PROMs) in the care of people with CVD in African countries.
METHODS: This study included studies that reported the use of at least one PROM in participants with CVD. The study took place in at least one African country.
RESULTS: The 25 included studies originating from13 countries were primarily observational (n = 23), and most commonly studied adults with

People living with HIV (PLWH) are at increased risk of frailty, yet the role of sleep disturbances in this risk remains underexplored. In this cross-sectional study, we aimed to evaluate self-reported sleep quality in PLWH and relevance to frailty in a high HIV-prevalence setting within Africa. We enrolled 50 PLWH on suppressive antiretroviral therapy (age: 56.9 ± 4.4 years; 26 females) and 50 matched HIV-seronegative controls (age: 56.6 ± 4.3 years; 24 females) in Botswana. Sleep quality was scored subjectively as "good" or "poor" based on participants' responses to two self-reported sleep qu

BACKGROUND: There are no validated waist circumference (WC) cut-offs to define metabolic syndrome in Black people with HIV.
METHODS: Cross-sectional analyses within the CKD-AFRICA study. We used Pearson correlation coefficients and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves to describe the relationship between WC and cardiometabolic parameters including triglycerides, cholesterol, glucose, glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c), and homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), and to identify optimal WC cut-offs for each of these outcomes.
RESULTS: We included 383 participants (5

Persistently low white blood cell count (WBC) and neutrophil count is a well-described phenomenon in persons of African ancestry, whose etiology remains unknown. We recently used admixture mapping to identify an approximately 1-megabase region on chromosome 1, where ancestry status (African or European) almost entirely accounted for the difference in WBC between African Americans and European Americans. To identify the specific genetic change responsible for this association, we analyzed genotype and phenotype data from 6,005 African Americans from the Jackson Heart Study (JHS), the Health, Ag

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this systematic review is to identify, appraise, and synthesize the best available evidence on the effectiveness of opioid substitution treatment in reducing HIV risk behavior among African, Caribbean, and Black people.
INTRODUCTION: Substance use plays an important role in HIV transmission among Black people by increasing risky sexual behavior and the risk of HIV acquisition. Opioid substitution treatment, such as methadone maintenance treatment and buprenorphine therapy, has been found to be an effective measure to minimize HIV transmission attributable to opioid

BACKGROUND: Central African Republic (CAR) is one of the poorest countries in the world with nearly 65% of its inhabitants living in extreme poverty, and 87% lacking access to safely managed sanitation facilities. Poor sanitation and limited access to healthcare contribute to high transmission of intestinal parasitoses. The present study aimed to assess the occurrence of intestinal parasitic infections (IPIs) in two separate ethnic groups inhabiting the rainforests in the Lobaye Prefecture in the southern parts of the CAR: the nomadic BaAka Pygmies and the sedentary Bantu people. In addition,

BACKGROUND: Old age is an important risk factor for developing cancer, but few data exist on this association in people with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV, PWH) in sub-Saharan Africa.
METHODS: The South African HIV Cancer Match study is a nationwide cohort of PWH based on a linkage between HIV-related laboratory records from the National Health Laboratory Service and cancer diagnoses from the National Cancer Registry for 2004-2014. We included PWH who had HIV-related tests on separate days. Using natural splines, we modeled cancer incidence rates as a function of age.
RESULTS: We include

PURPOSE: Despite extensive research, HIV-1 remains a global epidemic with variations in pathogenesis across regions and subtypes. The Viral Infectivity Factor (Vif) protein, which neutralizes the host protein APOBEC3G, has been implicated in differences in clinical outcomes among people living with HIV (PLHIV). Most studies on Vif sequence diversity have focused on subtype B, leaving gaps in understanding Vif variations in HIV-1C regions like South Africa. This study aimed to identify and compare Vif sequence diversity in a cohort of 51 South African PLHIV and other HIV-1C prevalent regions.

On 1 April 2018 the South African Health Promotion Levy on sugary beverages (HPL) came into effect with the goal of lowering the consumption of sugar sweetened beverages (SSBs) across the South African population. The Republic of South Africa, following the economic and nutrition transitions that occurred after the end of Apartheid, has one of the highest rates of obesity in sub-Saharan Africa. Within this context, this qualitative study examined the food choices and food access of young people living in one neighbourhood of Khayelitsha, Cape Town in 2019 during the period soon after the imple

OBJECTIVES: Marginalised and non-white voices are under-represented in food and nutrition policy in Australia. To achieve equitable food systems that support healthy diets for all, the voices and lived experiences of people from diverse cultural backgrounds must be meaningfully included in decision-making. This research aimed to understand Sub-Saharan African (SSA) young people's experiences of food and nutrition and identify opportunities for culturally sensitive policies that can improve these experiences in Victoria, Australia.
DESIGN: A qualitative approach, grounded in critical theory, e
