OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to evaluate the bone resorption of alveolar bone grafting using LCBCT scan.
STUDY DESIGN: This was a prospective study. Nineteen patients with alveolar cleft were divided into 2 groups depending on the spontaneous eruption of the permanent tooth. All patients underwent alveolar bone grafting with iliac crest cancellous bone. LCBCT scans were taken 1 month and 6 months postoperatively.
RESULTS: LCBCT scans obtained the length, width, and height of the bone grafts. Three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of the bone grafts enabled a valuable objective a

Bone grafting of the alveolus has become an essential part of the contemporary surgical management of oral clefts. The benefits of this procedure are the stabilization of the maxillary arch, elimination of oronasal fistulae, the reconstruction of the soft tissue nasal base support, creation of bony support for subsequent tooth eruption or, when they are not present or not preserved, for implants application. The authors show a case of bone grafting with the aid of platelet-rich plasma (PRP). Because of the difficulties due to the oral cleft and to its surgical reparation (big size of bone defe

A short review of the literature is presented outlining the role of alveolar bone grafting in cleft patients. An analysis of a series of 47 secondary alveolar bone grafts in 34 patients is presented. The age range was 7-24 years. At the time of evaluation, 30 canines were in final occlusion and good alveolar bone levels were present in 83% of patients. Of the 13 bilateral cases (26 clefts), 14 canines were in final occlusion and all cases had good alveolar bone levels. No major complications were encountered. The graft was completely resorbed in 3 cases (6.4%) only.

Secondary bone grafting of the maxilla in the mixed transitional dentition stage has become a well-accepted procedure in the surgical protocol for rehabilitation of patients with residual alveolar clefts. This retrospective study was undertaken to evaluate and compare the long-term results obtained with iliac or cranial cancellous bone graft material in the area of alveolar clefts and was based on the independent experience of two plastic surgeons from the same center using exclusively cranial or iliac cancellous bone, respectively. The criteria for surgery were similar. The surgical technique

Although alveolar bone grafting (ABG) is the standard treatment for cleft lip and palate with alveolar clefts, no studies have visually demonstrated the qualitative changes in grafted bones over time. In this study, the authors attempted to depict the changes in ossification of the grafted bone over time using color mapping based on differences in Hounsfield units (HUs). Alveolar bone grafting was performed in 7 cases. Computed tomography data procured ∼1 month before ABG, 1 day after surgery, and 6 months after surgery were extracted using Mimics (version 26.0)-a medical image analysis softwa

OBJECTIVES: The secondary alveolar bone graft (ABG) is one of the key components in the treatment of cleft lip and palate. However, an ABG is commonly accompanied by postoperative facial edema. Although appropriate assessment of facial edema can facilitate the early detection of major postoperative complications, the usual course of swelling post-ABG is not yet fully understood. The present, prospective cohort study was conducted to clarify the typical course of facial swelling post-ABG.
METHODS: Nineteen operations in 17 patients who underwent an ABG between September 2019 and August 2020 we

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Gingivoperiosteoplasty (GPP) and alveolar bone grafting (ABG) procedures have a vast history. There have been many publications regarding ABG and secondary ABG, with and without presurgical infant orthopedics (PSIO), in bilateral cleft lip and palate patients. There is little long-term data available describing results of both techniques.
RECENT FINDINGS: The interdisciplinary approach to primary and secondary surgical procedures has proven to be beneficial for patients with bilateral cleft lip and palate. In the neonates, naso-alveolar molding (NAM) has been found to optim

A retrospective study was undertaken to evaluate the long-term results of bilateral alveolar bone grafting carried out at Great Ormond Street Hospital from 1983 to 1993. Fifty-five consecutive complete bilateral cleft lip and palate patients (36 males and 19 females) who had the operation were included in this study. The total number of cleft sites was 110. At the time of alveolar bone grafting, the mean age of the patients was 12.3 years with a range of 8.4-19.9 years. Cancellous bone from the iliac crest was grafted into the alveolar cleft areas. The cleft sites were studied in two groups ac

Twenty-six patients with cleft lip and palate (18 with unilateral and eight with bilateral clefts) with 34 canines that had erupted through grafted alveolar cleft defects were studied to evaluate their periodontal status. The results were compared with 58 canines erupted through a normal alveolus in 29 noncleft control patients. The overall periodontal status revealed a higher plaque index in the patients with cleft compared to the orthodontic control patients, but parameters of gingival index, probing depth, and attachment loss had no significant differences between these groups. The cleft-as

The purpose of this study was to compare alveolar bone thickness around the teeth adjacent to the cleft using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) in patients with cleft lip and palate (CLP) who underwent primary alveolar grafting (PAG) as compared with CLP waiting for secondary alveolar grafting (SAG) and to determine the associations with other factors such as the patient's age, sex, and type of cleft. CBCTs of 39 CLP patients were divided into either group 1 (PAG, N = 11) or group 2 (SAG, N = 28). Measurements of bone thickness around the closest tooth to the cleft were performed on the axi

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the sufficiency of the mandibular symphysis as a donor site for unilateral and bilateral alveolar grafting, measuring both the alveolar cleft volume and maximum bone graft volume that can be harvested from the mandibular symphysis using 3-dimensional computed tomography (CT) and software in children and adults. Computed tomography data obtained from 20 unilateral and bilateral cleft lip palates patients in the preoperative period were used in this study. The patients were divided into 2 groups: children (female, n = 5; male, n = 5) and adults (female,

In this study, we aimed to provide guidance for selecting bone grafting materials in cases of alveolar clefts. Twenty-nine patients with unilateral complete alveolar clefts were categorized into three groups based on the bone grafting material used: Group A (iliac bone block grafts), Group B (iliac cancellous bone grafts), and Group C (chin bone block grafts). Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) data were analyzed using Mimics 19.0 software. Results showed that Group A had the highest bone formation rate, with significant differences observed between Groups A and B, as well as between Groups

INTRODUCTION: Secondary alveolar cleft repair using autologous bone graft is currently the gold standard in treating residual alveolar clefts. Despite its effectiveness, this technique is still burdened by several withdrawals, mostly related to donor site morbidity. To decrease disadvantages for patients, numerous attempts in the literature regarding bone substitutes have been described. The aim of this study is to compare the viability of bovine-based replacement bone material with respect of autologous bone graft in alveolar cleft reconstruction, through 3-dimensional alveolar cleft segmenta

This study aimed to evaluate photobiomodulation (PBM) adjunct effect on pain, swelling, and face temperature in individuals with oral cleft submitted to alveolar ridge bone grafting (ABG). The sample consisted of 46 patients with either incomplete or complete unilateral cleft lip and palate aged from 9 to 18 years, both sexes, who underwent ABG with chin donor area. Subjects were randomly divided into 3 groups: (1) Control (C): ABG (n=17); (2) PBM: ABG with PBM (n=14); (3) Simulated photobiomodulation (SPBM): ABG with SPBM (n=15). Aluminum Gallium Arsenide (GaAlAs) infrared laser was used at 8

Palatal fistulae are common complications of cleft palate surgery with a frequency of 5% to 29% and are challenging to repair. Optimal timing to repair palatal fistulae, in a staged fashion before alveolar bone grafting, or at the same time, still remains controversial. The primary aim of this study is to compare outcomes of 2 groups with regard to successful alveolar bone grafting in patients with cleft lip and palate and palatal fistulae. We describe a review of 85 consecutive patients identified as undergoing bone grafting from a single institution craniofacial team during 2003 to 2018. Twe
