Organic and total mercury levels in bigeye tuna, Thunnus obesus, harvested by Taiwanese fishing vessels in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans.

Muscle samples of 121 and 110 bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus) caught by Taiwanese long-line fishing vessels in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, respectively, were used to analyze total mercury (THg) and organic mercury (OHg) content. The overall THg and OHg concentrations were 0.786 ± 0.386 (0.214-3.133) and 0.595 ± 0.238 (0.143-2.222) mg kg⁻¹ wet weight, respectively, similar to the results of previous studies. Our findings, however, reflected the highest THg and OHg concentrations for the species in each ocean among the published data. Mean THg and OHg concentrations in Atlantic tuna were signif

The role of phytoplankton in the deep chlorophyll maximum CO2 dynamics along a zonal section (34.5°S) in South Atlantic Ocean.

Marine phytoplankton acts directly on the carbon biogeochemical cycle as key mediators of the biological carbon pump, and its efficiency is dependent on the composition of phytoplankton communities. Therefore, in the present study, we aimed to investigate the composition of phytoplankton communities in the deep chlorophyll maximum and the role of the different phytoplankton groups in CO2 dynamics and biogeochemical processes along the South Atlantic Ocean. Environmental and biological data were collected in the deep chlorophyll maximum in 59 stations along a zonal section (34.5°S) in the South

Microbial ocean-atmosphere transfer: The influence of sewage discharge into coastal waters on bioaerosols from an urban beach in the subtropical Atlantic.

All over the world, the oceans are the final destination of sewage transported by river estuaries, rainwater and other coastal discharges. The risks to human health related to direct contact with water and consumption of contaminated fish are well known, but little is known about the potential for atmospheric exposure to pollutants and pathogens from contaminated seawater. The release of microbial particles from the sea into the atmosphere occurs mainly by the eruption of rising bubbles through the sea surface microlayer (SML) or by sea spray. We investigated the heterotrophic bacteria density

Priority and emerging micropollutants distribution from coastal to continental slope sediments: A case study of Capbreton Submarine Canyon (North Atlantic Ocean).

Incising continental margins, submarine canyons are key issue for understanding shelf/deep sea exchange of particulate pollutant, impact on marine ecosystem and global geochemical cycling. The occurrence and distribution of 100 priority and emerging micropollutants were investigated in sediments within the first 25 km of the Capbreton submarine area. The most predominant compounds were polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), trace metals and metalloid (TMs) (e.g. mercury, lead and arsenic), synthetical musks (e.g. musk ketone, galaxolide), UV filters (e.g. octocrylene and 2-ethylhexyl 4-metho

Merizocotyle euzeti sp. n. (Monogenea: Monocotylidae) from the nasal tissue of three deep sea skates (Rajidae) in the southwestern Atlantic Ocean.

A new species of Merizocotyle Cerfontaine, 1894 (Monogenea: Monocotylidae) is described from the nasal tissues of three deep sea rajid skates: the southern thorny skate, Amblyraja doellojuradoi (Pozzi), broadnose skate, Bathyraja brachyurops (Fowler), and yellownose skate, Zearaja chilensis (Guichenot), collected off Buenos Aires Province, Argentina, southwest Atlantic Ocean. Two additional species of sympatric rajid, the white-dotted skate, Bathyraja albomaculata (Norman), and the Patagonian skate, Bathyraja macloviana (Norman), were also examined but no merizocotylines were found. Investigating high pathogenicity avian influenza virus incursions to remote islands: detection of H5N1 on Gough Island in the South Atlantic Ocean.

Understanding the mechanisms underlying the emergence and spread of high pathogenicity avian influenza virus (HPAIV) is critical for tracking its global dissemination, particularly via migratory seabirds, given their role in transmission over long distances. Scavenging seabirds, such as skuas, may act as both reservoirs and vectors, and have been linked to multiple outbreaks since 2021. Here, we report the detection of HPAIV H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b in three Tristan skua (Stercorarius antarcticus hamiltoni) carcasses on Gough Island in the central South Atlantic Ocean. Occurrence of larval ascaridoid nematodes in the Argentinean short-finned squid Illex argentinus from the Southwest Atlantic Ocean (off Falkland Islands).

The Argentinean short-finned squid (Illex argentinus) is an oceanic, neritic species widely distributed off the east coast of South America, representing the most abundant commercially exploited squid species in these waters. Despite the great commercial importance of Argentinean short-finned squid as a food resource, and as frozen product exported to Europe, the presence of zoonotic anisakid nematodes, especially in the mantle of the squid, is poorly known. The occurrence and site of infection of larval ascaridoid nematodes in 70 I. argentinus caught off the Falkland Islands were investigated

Cell-specific CO2 fixation rates of two distinct groups of plastidic protists in the Atlantic Ocean remain unchanged after nutrient addition.

To assess the role of open-ocean ecosystems in global CO2 fixation, we investigated how picophytoplankton, which dominate primary production, responded to episodic increases in nutrient availability. Previous experiments have shown nitrogen alone, or in combination with phosphorus or iron, to be the proximate limiting nutrient(s) for total phytoplankton grown over several days. Much less is known about how nutrient upshift affects picophytoplankton CO2 fixation over the duration of the light period. To address this issue, we performed a series of small volume (8-60 ml) - short term (10-11 h) n

Uncovering genetic population structure in the Endangered northern rockhopper penguin (Eudyptes moseleyi) across islands in the Southern Atlantic and Indian oceans.

BACKGROUND: The northern rockhopper penguin (Eudyptes moseleyi) is a threatened species, listed as Endangered globally by the IUCN owing to rapid population decreases in the past, combined with a limited distributional range. Their breeding is confined to five islands in the central South Atlantic Ocean (Gough, Nightingale, Inaccessible, Alex (= Middle), and Tristan da Cunha) and two islands in the southern Indian Ocean (Amsterdam and Saint Paul). Non-breeding birds forage widely in these oceans and vagrant individuals have been recorded in the Falkland Islands/Malvinas, South Africa, Kerguele

Bioaccumulation of trace elements by Leach's storm-petrels (Hydrobates leucorhous) in the North and South Atlantic Ocean during the non-breeding period.

Trace elements occur naturally in the environment, but anthropogenic activities can amplify their release, increasing exposure and bioaccumulation in marine predators such as seabirds. Mercury (Hg) in liver, blood, and eggs of Leach's storm-petrels (Hydrobates leucorhous), has been investigated as a short-term exposure indicator of hatching and fledging success. However, chronic Hg intake and exposure to other trace elements during the non-breeding period remain poorly understood. This study assessed geographic variation in trace element exposure and relative trophic position in Leach's storm-

Distribution and trophic transfer of mercury and selenium in European hake (Merluccius merluccius) from the Northeast Atlantic Ocean: A stable isotope approach.

European hake (EH - Merluccius merluccius) are a commercially valuable, high trophic position marine fish species inhabiting the Northeast Atlantic Ocean (NEAO). Here, we investigated total mercury (Hg) bioaccumulation and trophic transfer dynamics, and selenium (Se) Hg interactions in EH fillets at a historic waste disposal site with a known Hg point source (n = 25) and at reference sites (n = 763) throughout Norway. Fillet concentrations of Hg (> 91 % methylmercury - MeHg) and Se, were elevated in samples from the polluted site (Hgpolluted = 0.271 ± 0.153, Hgreference = 0.114 ± 0.096, Sepoll

Ciguatera Fish Poisoning in the Caribbean Sea and Atlantic Ocean: Reconciling the Multiplicity of Ciguatoxins and Analytical Chemistry Approach for Public Health Safety.

Ciguatera is a major circumtropical poisoning caused by the consumption of marine fish and invertebrates contaminated with ciguatoxins (CTXs): neurotoxins produced by endemic and benthic dinoflagellates which are biotransformed in the fish food-web. We provide a history of ciguatera research conducted over the past 70 years on ciguatoxins from the Pacific Ocean (P-CTXs) and Caribbean Sea (C-CTXs) and describe their main chemical, biochemical, and toxicological properties. Currently, there is no official method for the extraction and quantification of ciguatoxins, regardless their origin, mainl

Identification of Environmental Predictors and Their Spatial Heterogeneity for VMS-Derived Fishing Duration in the Argentine Shortfin Squid Fishery Across the Southwest Atlantic Ocean.

Argentine shortfin squid (Illex argentinus) fishing grounds in the Southwest Atlantic extend across the Argentine Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and adjacent high seas, where environmental contrasts may lead to spatial heterogeneity. In this study, Vessel Monitoring System data from December 2020 to June 2025 were used to derive fishing duration as an indicator of fishing-ground use intensity. Conventional and derived environmental variables described vertical temperature and salinity differences, surface gradients, and topography. K-means clustering identified fishing-ground units, while CatBo
