Microbial diversity and biotechnological potential of mangrove leaf litter in Kebun Raya Mangrove, Surabaya, Indonesia.

Mangrove ecosystems play a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance with leaf litter serving as an important substrate for diverse microbial communities. This study investigates the microbial communities inhabiting leaf litter from four different mangrove species: Rhizophora apiculata, Rhizophora stylosa, Sonneratia caseolaris, and Avicennia marina collected from Kebun Raya Mangrove, Surabaya, Indonesia. Using metagenomic sequencing, we revealed that Proteobacteria were predominant, followed by Chlorobi and Actinobacteria in the samples. Interestingly, we detected notable populations of

Distinct molecular responses of mangrove plants to hypoxia and reoxygenation stresses contribute to their resilience in coastal wetland environment.

Mangroves adapt to periodical submergence and constitute resilient ecosystems in coastal environments. The question is whether they can sustain long submergence stress when sea level rises as a consequence of climate change. To address this, seedlings of two representative mangrove species that acclimate to low to mid tide (Avicennia marina) and mid to high tide (Kandelia obovata) conditions were treated with continual submergence for 7 days as extended hypoxia, or semi-diurnal cyclic submergence and reoxygenation for 7 days. At specific time points, leaves were collected to construct RNA-Sequ

Trace metal geochemistry in mangrove sediments and their transfer to mangrove plants (New Caledonia).

Because of their physico-chemical inherent properties, mangrove sediments may act as a sink for pollutants coming from catchments. The main objective of this study was to assess the distribution of some trace metals in the tissues of various mangrove plants developing downstream highly weathered ferralsols, taking into account metals partitioning in the sediment. In New Caledonia, mangroves act as a buffer between open-cast mines and the world's largest lagoon. As a result of the erosion of lateritic soils, Ni and Fe concentrations in the sediment were substantially higher than the world avera

Predicting blue carbon sequestration in Sundarban coastal mangroves: A spatially explicit approach with INVEST and machine learning to advance climate resilience and UN SDG-aligned nature-based climate solutions.

Coastal blue carbon ecosystems have emerged as vital nature-based solutions for addressing climate change. This study examines the Indian Sundarbans, the largest contiguous mangrove forest globally, to quantify key metrics, including carbon accumulation, emissions, stock, net sequestration, and their monetary evaluation, over both near- and long-term horizons. By employing in-situ biomass and sediment measurements, RS-derived LULC maps, alongside the InVEST Coastal Blue Carbon (CBC) model and Machine Learning (ML) algorithms, we present a detailed spatial assessment of blue carbon dynamics pro

Exploring Spatial and Temporal Variations in Stem-Mediated Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Different Species of Mangroves.

Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, particularly methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O), from mangroves can challenge their carbon sequestration capacity. This study measured GHG emissions from the tree stems of four mangrove species (Avicennia marina, Kandelia obovata, Lumnitzera racemosa, and Rhizophora stylosa) along the western coast of Taiwan. All studied species emitted CO2, CH4, and N2O at the stem-atmosphere interface, with A. marina exhibiting the highest GHG fluxes. Notably, stem N2O emissions from A. marina significantly contributed (1.2 to 100.1%) to total ecosystem fluxes, whereas stem

Effectiveness of remediation of metal-contaminated mangrove sediments (Sydney estuary, Australia).

Industrial activities and urbanization have had a major consequence for estuarine ecosystem health and water quality globally. Likewise, Sydney estuary has been significantly impacted by widespread, poor industrial practices in the past, and remediation of legacy contaminants have been undertaken in limited parts of this waterway. The objective of the present investigation was to determine the effectiveness of remediation of a former Pb-contaminated industrial site in Homebush Bay on Sydney estuary (Australia) through sampling of inter-tidal sediments and mangrove (Avicennia marina) tissue (fi

Influence of growth medium on cometabolic degradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons by Sphingomonas sp. strain PheB4.

The influence of growth medium on cometabolic degradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) was investigated when Sphingomonas sp. strain PheB4 isolated from surface mangrove sediments was grown in either phenanthrene-containing mineral salts medium (PMSM) or nutrient broth (NB). The NB-grown culture exhibited a more rapid cometabolic degradation of single and mixed non-growth substrate PAHs compared to the PMSM-grown culture. The concentrations of PAH metabolites were also lower in NB-grown culture than in PMSM-grown culture, suggesting that NB-grown culture removed metabolites at a

Influence of tide levels and community composition on soil carbon sequestration in mangrove largest wetland Leizhou Peninsula, China.

Mangroves play a vital role in mitigating atmospheric carbon dioxide by storing substantial quantity of carbon in their soils. Unlike terrestrial forests where most carbon is stored in living trees, mangroves store approximately 70–90% of their carbon in the soil. Mangrove soil carbon dynamics and their driving factors have been extensively studied globally, there remains a significant lack of region-specific data, particularly in southern China. To address this gap, we conducted a field investigation across six mangrove wetland sites in China’s largest reserve, located on the Leizhou Peninsul

Removal of Cd(II) and Pb(II) from wastewater by using triethylenetetramine functionalized grafted cellulose acetate-manganese dioxide composite.

In this manuscript, we have studied the removal of Cd(II) and Pb(II) ions from aqueous solution by using triethylenetetramine functionalized cellulose acetate grafted with the copolymer-manganese dioxide composite. The novel sorbent cellulose was extracted from the mangrove trees (Avicennia marina) and it was then acetylated and grafted with acrylamide. The sorbent composite was designed to interact simultaneously with higher metal loading by complexation-adsorption process. FT-IR, SEM, EDAX and TGA techniques were employed to characterize the cellulose modified composite. Sorption equilibria

Thraustochytrids from the Red Sea mangroves in Egypt and their abilities to produce Omega-3 fatty acids.

Forty-one isolates of the genus Aurantiochytrium were cultured from 32 samples collected from the Red Sea mangroves, Egypt. Cultured thraustochytrids isolated from: decaying leaves of Avicennia marina (34 isolates), decaying pneumatophores of A. marina (3 isolates), and decaying leaves of Zostera marina (4 isolates). Of the 41 strains, three strains (SUMCC 21014, SUMCC 21015, and SUMCC 21016) were selected based on both their high biomass production and high lipid content. Phylogenetic analyses based on 18 S rDNA placed the three strains within the Aurantiochytrium clade with high statistical

21st-Century Mangrove Expansion Along the Southeastern United States.

Warming winter temperatures are driving range expansion of tropical, cold-sensitive mangroves into temperate ecosystems. Along the Atlantic coast of North America, the mangrove range limit is particularly sensitive to climate variability and historical data demonstrate that the mangrove-salt marsh ecotone on this coast has shifted recurrently during recent centuries. However, a comprehensive understanding of how this mangrove-salt marsh ecotone may shift in the future remains lacking. Here, we combine ensemble forecasting of mangrove distribution for the next century with high-resolution ocean

Allelopathic inhibition of harmful algae by mangrove leaf extracts under contrasting habitats and algal densities.

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) increase with intensified coastal eutrophication, underscoring the need for environmentally friendly control strategies. Mangrove-derived allelochemicals can regulate HABs, yet variability among plant and algal species remains unclear. This study compared the allelopathic inhibition of aqueous leaf extracts from three mangrove species (Aegiceras corniculatum, Avicennia marina and Kandelia obovata) on two HAB dinoflagellates, Scrippsiella trochoidea and Alexandrium catenella. Leaves collected from two mangrove wetlands in southern China, Futian (FT) and Dapeng (DP),

Mangroves protected villages and reduced death toll during Indian super cyclone.

Protection against coastal disasters has been identified as an important service of mangrove ecosystems. Empirical studies on this service have been criticized, however, for using small samples and inadequately controlling for confounding factors. We used data on several hundred villages to test the impact of mangroves on human deaths during a 1999 super cyclone that struck Orissa, India. We found that villages with wider mangroves between them and the coast experienced significantly fewer deaths than ones with narrower or no mangroves. This finding was robust to the inclusion of a wide range

Fouling-Resistant Behavior of Hydrophobic Surfaces Based on Poly(dimethylsiloxane) Modified by Green rGO@ZnO Nanocomposites.

In line with global goals to solve marine biofouling challenges, this study proposes an approach to developing a green synthesis inspired by natural resources for fouling-resistant behavior. A hybrid antifouling/foul release (HAF) coating based on poly(dimethylsiloxane) containing a green synthesized nanocomposite was developed as an environmentally friendly strategy. The nanocomposites based on graphene oxide (GO) and using marine sources, leaves, and stems of mangroves (Avicennia marina), brown algae (Polycladia myrica), and zinc oxide were compared. The effectiveness of this strategy was ch

The influence of high dietary protein, energy and mineral intake on deficient young camel (Camelus dromedarius)--II. Changes in mineral status.

1. Mangrove Avicennia marina is poor in some trace elements such as copper, zinc and manganese. In a trial we used 32 young camels divided into four groups. 2. Groups 1 and 3 were supplemented with copper and zinc in drinking water after 1 month of mangrove feeding. 3. Groups 2 and 3 received concentrate rich in protein and energy. The supplementation was stopped after 2 months. 4. All the camels were deficient in trace elements at the beginning of mineral supplementation. 5. The plasma concentration of copper increased significantly up to normal levels (less than 70 micrograms/100 ml) in ener

Fine-scale mangrove species monitoring and ecological threshold assessment for coastal management in Quanzhou Bay, China.

Reliable species-level monitoring of mangrove ecosystems is increasingly required for environmental assessment and regulatory decision-making, yet a methodological gap persists between remote sensing outputs and ecological risk evaluation. This study proposes an integrated assessment framework that links multi-sensor satellite imagery with ecological niche modeling to support precision monitoring and threshold-based management. Using Sentinel-2 and SPOT-6 data combined with an object-based U-Net model, we achieved high species-level classification accuracy (OA = 89.02%, Kappa = 0.82) for appro

Xylem anatomy and pit architecture but not perforation-plate types shape hydraulic strategies against hypersaline and drought stress in eight woody mangroves.

Mangrove species mainly inhabit tropical and subtropical intertidal zones, where they suffer periodic tidal inundation. They display diverse perforation-plate types and pit structures; however, the extent to which these anatomical features contribute to their adaptation to coastal environments remains unclear. In this study, we quantified 27 traits, representing hydraulics, anatomy and pit characteristics, in eight woody mangrove species from Hainan, Southern China, including four simple-perforation (SI) and four scalariform-perforation (SC) plate species. All species exhibited high xylem embo

Mercury methylation in sediments of a Brazilian mangrove under different vegetation covers and salinities.

The presence and formation of methylmercury (MMHg), a highly toxic form of Hg, in mangrove ecosystems is poorly studied. Therefore the aim of this study was to evaluate mercury methylation potentials in sediment, litter and root samples (Avicennia shaueriana and Spartina alterniflora) from different regions of a mangrove ecosystem, as well as the influence of salinity on methylation. Sediment was sampled under different depths and in mangrove regions with different plant covers and salinities. All samples were incubated with (203)Hg and MM(203)Hg was extracted and measured by liquid scintillat
