Design and Development of a Device (Sifilotto®) for Tumour Tracking in Cervical Cancer Patients Undergoing Robotic Arm LINAC Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy Boost: Background to the STARBACS Study.

Standard of Care (SOC) for locally advanced cervical cancer is represented by external beam radiation therapy concurrent with platinum-based chemotherapy and immunotherapy (cCIRT) followed by brachytherapy boost and immunotherapy maintenance. In some instances, it is impossible to perform brachytherapy due to patient and/or cancer issues. In these circumstances, an external beam boost could be delivered. Using a robotic arm LINAC, it is mandatory to use intramucosal implanted fiducials which are needed for tumour tracking. To avoid invasive procedures, we developed an original intravaginal 3D-

Biology of Exfoliation of Plasma Membrane-Derived Vesicles and the Radiation Response: Historical Background, Applications in Biodosimetry and Cell-Free Therapeutics, and Quantal Mechanisms for Their Release and Function with Implications for Space Travel.

This historical review of extracellular vesicles in the setting of exposure to ionizing radiation (IR) traces our understanding of how vesicles were initially examined and reported in the literature in the late 1970s (for secreted exosomes) and early 1980s (for plasma membrane-derived, exfoliated vesicles) to where we are now and where we may be headed in the next decade. An emphasis is placed on biophysical properties of extracellular vesicles, energy consumption and the role of vesiculation as an essential component of membrane turnover. The impact of intercellular signal trafficking by vesi

Radiation, diagnosis, and management.

The biomedical effects of ionizing and nonionizing radiations include responses that are known to have thresholds ("nonstochastic" effects) as well as responses that are presumed to have no thresholds ("stochastic" effects). The latter include mutagenic, carcinogenic, and teratogenic effects. Present radiation risk management strategies seek to protect completely against nonstochastic effects by preventing anyone from accumulating a dose of radiation in excess of the relevant threshold. Protection against stochastic effects, on the other hand, is sought by limiting the level of radiation expos

Environmental absorbed-dose quantities for natural radionuclides in soil using a simplified block phantom with an ICRP 110 comparison.

Natural radionuclides in soil produce an outdoor photon field, but an organ absorbed dose also depends on source depth, body geometry, scored mass, emission data and charged-particle transport settings. This work calculates absorbed-dose quantities in defined scoring regions for 40K, the 238U decay series and the 232Th decay series with Geant4 and a simplified block phantom. The Geant4 source uses the full nuclear gamma-emission library recovered from the adopted RadioactiveDecay6.1.2 and PhotonEvaporation6.1.2 data. The production calculation consisted of 20 independent replicas and 4.0×109 s

Comparison of external doses between radio-contaminated areas and areas with high natural terrestrial background using the individual dosimeter 'D-shuttle' 75 months after the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident.

After the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident, the air dose gradually decreases every year due to the physical decay of radioactive materials and environmental changes, as well as countermeasures. However, there is little information on personal behavioural patterns and individual dose from external exposure among the inhabitants around the nuclear power plant. To evaluate the dose from external exposure in Minamisoma city, and compare the differences with outside Fukushima Prefecture, we started the external dose assessment project in cooperation with city officials in Minamisoma a

Estimation of the radiological background and dose assessment in areas with naturally occurring uranium geochemical anomalies--a case study in the Iberian Massif (Central Portugal).

Naturally occurring uranium geochemical anomalies, representative of the several thousand recognized in the Portuguese section of the Iberian Massif and outcropping in three target areas with a total of a few thousand square metres, were subjected to a detailed study (1:1000 scale) to evaluate the radiological health-risk on the basis of a dose assessment. To reach this goal some radioactive isotopes from the uranium, thorium and potassium radioactive series were measured in 52 samples taken from different environmental compartments: soils, stream sediments, water, foodstuff (vegetables) and a

PTB intercomparisons of passive H*(10) area dosemeters for environmental monitoring.

For measuring the quantity ambient dose equivalent, H*(10), various passive photon and neutron dosemeters have been newly developed and are used in particular for the monitoring of nuclear facilities in the radiation field of the natural ambient radiation. Since 2005, the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) has been performing intercomparisons to study fundamental properties and the long-term behaviour of area dosemeters under real environmental conditions, i.e. the accuracy of photon and neutron measurements performed in the complex natural radiation field. Measuring bodies from four

Assessment of terrestrial gamma radiation dose rates and its associated hazards in Taraba State, Nigeria.

Natural radioactivity is the major source of human exposure to ionizing radiation, whose level of exposure primarily depends on geographical and geological features of the region. Taraba State is endowed with abundant uranium deposits, which emit gamma rays into the environment. Gamma ray is carcinogenic, and its relation to excess cancer risks in the state is yet to be ascertained. Terrestrial gamma radiation dose (TGRD) rates in Taraba State were assessed with respect to geological formations of the state, using a handheld gamma surveyor. The measured TGRD rates in the studied area ranged fr

Implementing an operational program for determining the radiological status of material and equipment.

The National Ignition Facility at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory has implemented a protocol for evaluating and releasing material and equipment that is potentially "volumetrically contaminated" as a result of neutron activation and shown not to be "distinguishable from background." This protocol is an important element of the National Ignition Facility's operational program as the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Order 458.1, Radiation Protection of the Public and the Environment, requires DOE approval of the process used to release volumetrically contaminated personal property an

Technologically enhanced naturally occurring radioactive materials.

INTRODUCTION: Naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM) are ubiquitous throughout the earth's crust. Human manipulation of NORM for economic ends, such as mining, ore processing, fossil fuel extraction, and commercial aviation, may lead to what is known as "technologically enhanced naturally occurring radioactive materials," often called TENORM. The existence of TENORM results in an increased risk for human exposure to radioactivity. Workers in TENORM-producing industries may be occupationally exposed to ionizing radiation. TENORM industries may release significant amounts of radioactiv

Environmental health physics-50 years of progress.

Environmental health physics is an interdisciplinary field, involving study of the release, transport, and fate of radioactive material in the environment. Further, it addresses the interaction of humans with radioactive materials within the ambient (outdoor) environment and with the environments associated with modern technology and lifestyles. It also involves both naturally occurring and artificially produced radionuclides with the former generally being by far the highest source of exposure. In fact, doses from naturally occurring radionuclides are increasingly being used as a benchmark fo

In-situ depth-resolved gamma spectrometry of natural radionuclides in central Nepal: Radiological assessment across Himalayan formations.

Potassium-dominated elevated natural radiation environments are exceptionally rare globally, with documented high background radiation areas typically being thorium-dominated (Kerala, India; Guarapari, Brazil) or uranium-dominated (Ramsar, Iran). This study characterizes such an environment in the Himalayan region within the Markhu Formation of central Nepal and establishes the first depth-resolved radionuclide baseline across eight geological formations from Kathmandu to Hetauda. In-situ gamma ray spectrometry at 10 cm intervals to 50 cm depth was used to quantify 40K, 238U, and 232Th distrib

Exposure to radioactive rocks from the Egyptian eastern desert attenuates the efficiency of the immune organs and induces apoptosis of blood lymphocytes in rat model.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Exposure to ionizing radiation emitted from natural sources induces many health hazards. The response to ionizing radiation involves a number of mediators including inflammatory cytokines and free radicals which mediate immunosuppression. The present study aimed to monitor the impact of exposure to natural radioactive rocks from the Egyptian eastern desert on the primary immune organs. Therefore, three experimental groups (15 rats per group) were used: group I included the control non-irradiated rats; group II included rats that were exposed for 28 consecutive days to natural radioactive rocks

Lung damage by thoron progenies versus possible damage redemption by lung stem cells: a perspective.

PURPOSE: Natural radiation is the major source of human exposure to ionizing radiation. About 52% of the total dose received from the high natural background radiations (HNBR) areas are due to inhalation dose from radon (222Rn)/thoron (220Rn) and their progenies. Hence, we reviewed the biological effects of 222Rn/220Rn and their progenies on lung tissue, and the possible role of lung stem cells in salvaging the damage caused by 222Rn/220Rn and their progenies. MATERIALS AND METHOD: We have extensively reviewed articles among several hits obtained in PubMed, Scopus, and Elsevier databases with

Natural radioactivity in soil and concomitant hazards in the BSCIC Industrial Area, Jhenaidah, Bangladesh: a pioneering study.

Soil serves as both a repository and a pathway for natural radioactivity, influencing human exposure through the transfer of radionuclides into the food-chain and atmosphere. Industrial activities can further disrupt this distribution by introducing contaminants, potentially leading to environmental accumulation. This pioneering study investigates the activity concentrations of naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORMs) and assesses radiological hazards in soil from the Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) Industrial Area in Jhenaidah, Bangladesh. Thirty soil samp

Natural radiation monitoring and control treatment in the Hantepe beach.

This work has been carried out to monitor and decrease the natural radiation exposure at the Hantepe beach (Çanakkale, Turkey). A 0.25- to 0.30-m-thick layer of sand was scraped, removed and deposited in a safe place in order to decrease people's exposure to radiation and to relieve relevant radiophobia. The original mean value of dose rate on the beach was 1.38 μGy h(-1) at the contact and 1.0 μGy h(-1) at 1 m above the ground. After the scraping process, the mean value of dose rate decreased to 0.98 μGy h(-1) at the contact and to 0.78 μGy h(-1) at 1 m above the ground. One year later, these
