[Micro-inflammation and digestive bacterial translocation in chronic kidney disease].

Micro-inflammation has been recognized as a major factor associated with the poor prognosis of patients with chronic kidney disease. Those patients have an increased rate of pro-inflammatory markers like interleukin 6, C-Reactive protein, Tumor Necrosis Factor α and fibrinogen. Among multiple and complex causes of micro-inflammation the gut microbiota could be an important actor considering the dysbiosis in chronic kidney disease which would enhance the synthesis of uremic toxins with cardiovascular toxicity and the bacterial translocation. This review details the role of the gut microbiota in

Pathological bacterial translocation in cirrhosis: pathophysiology, diagnosis and clinical implications.

Bacterial translocation (BT) is defined by the passage of viable indigenous bacteria from the intestinal lumen to mesenteric lymph nodes (MLNs) and other territories, and its diagnostic criteria rely on the isolation of viable bacteria in MLNs. Small intestinal overgrowth, increased intestinal permeability and immunological alterations are the main factors involved in its pathogenesis. BT is obviously difficult to identify in patients with cirrhosis, and alternative methods have been proposed instead. Bacterial DNA detection and species identification in serum or ascitic fluid has been propose

[Necrotizing enterocolitis and bacterial translocation: role of minimal enteral nutrition].

INTRODUCTION: Both necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) and bacterial translocation (BT) have in common that bacterial overgrowth, a decrease in immunity and intestinal mucosal damage, followed by a barrier failure, can act as trigger factors. The main objectives in NEC treatment are to reduce mortality due to sepsis and to promote feeding tolerance. To achieve that, Minimal Enteral Nutrition (MEN) (less than 25% of the calories provided by enteral route) is a more and more used technique in newborns who receive Parenteral Nutrition (PN) to slow down fasting related villi atrophy and to attenuate i

Intestinal mucosal oxidative damage and bacterial translocation in cirrhotic rats.

BACKGROUND: Bacterial translocation plays an important role in the pathogenesis of spontaneous bacterial peritonitis mainly due to intestinal bacterial overgrowth. Alterations in the functional integrity of the intestinal barrier caused by an increased production of free radical metabolites as a consequence of portal hypertension could also facilitate bacterial translocation in cirrhotic rats. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to determine intestinal mucosal lipid peroxidation and neutrophil infiltration and their relationship with portal hypertension and bacterial translocation in cirrhoti

Alterations in rat intestinal transit by morphine promote bacterial translocation.

Translocation of enteric microorganisms from the intestinal tract to extraintestinal sites has been proposed as an early step in the development of gram-negative sepsis. This study examined the role of altered bowel transit in influencing intestinal bacteriostasis and bacterial translocation using morphine as a pharmacologic inhibitor of such transit. In the first experiment, either normal saline (N = 8) or morphine sulfate (20 mg/kg; N = 8) was injected subcutaneously. Two hours later, morphine (7.5 mg/kg) was infused subcutaneously for an additional 22 hr; control animals received saline alo

Low potassium disrupt intestinal barrier and result in bacterial translocation.

BACKGROUND: Bacterial translocation was observed in critical illness and patients with chronic diseases such as liver cirrhosis and chronic kidney disease (CKD). Hypokalemia is a common complication in these diseases. Whether low potassium diet may increase intestinal permeability and result in bacterial translocation lack of evidence. The present study was aimed to investigate the potential effects of LK on intestinal permeability. METHODS: Grade 8-week-old male Bal B/C mice were randomly placed either on a normal potassium (NK) mouse chow or a low potassium (LK) diet for 28 days. Intestinal

Reducing atelectasis attenuates bacterial growth and translocation in experimental pneumonia.

Besides being one of the mechanisms responsible for ventilator-induced lung injury, atelectasis also seems to aggravate the course of experimental pneumonia. In this study, we examined the effect of reducing the degree of atelectasis by natural modified surfactant and/or open lung ventilation on bacterial growth and translocation in a piglet model of Group B streptococcal pneumonia. After creating surfactant deficiency by whole lung lavage, intratracheal instillation of bacteria induced severe pneumonia with bacterial translocation into the blood stream, resulting in a mortality rate of almost

Rigid bronchoscopy induces bacterial translocation: an experimental study in rats.

Bronchoscopy has the potential to propagate infections. Bacterial translocation was hypothesised to be the cause of infections observed following bronchoscopy and this study was designed to assess the risk of bacterial translocation following rigid bronchoscopy in rats. A total of 30 rats were evaluated. The study group (n=15) underwent rigid bronchoscopy. Arterial blood gas analysis was performed in all rats. Blood and tissue cultures from the ileum, caecum, mesenteric lymph nodes, liver, spleen, mediastinal lymph nodes and lung were obtained 24 h following bronchoscopy. Bacterial translocati

Rifaximin has minor effects on bacterial composition, inflammation, and bacterial translocation in cirrhosis: A randomized trial.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Decompensated cirrhosis is characterized by disturbed hemodynamics, immune dysfunction, and high risk of infections. Translocation of viable bacteria and bacterial products from the gut to the blood is considered a key driver in this process. Intestinal decontamination with rifaximin may reduce bacterial translocation (BT) and decrease inflammation. A randomized, placebo-controlled trial investigated the effects of rifaximin on inflammation and BT in decompensated cirrhosis. METHODS: Fifty-four out-patients with cirrhosis and ascites were randomized, mean age 56 years (± 8

Giardia duodenalis induces paracellular bacterial translocation and causes postinfectious visceral hypersensitivity.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is the most frequent functional gastrointestinal disorder. It is characterized by abdominal hypersensitivity, leading to discomfort and pain, as well as altered bowel habits. While it is common for IBS to develop following the resolution of infectious gastroenteritis [then termed postinfectious IBS (PI-IBS)], the mechanisms remain incompletely understood. Giardia duodenalis is a cosmopolitan water-borne enteropathogen that causes intestinal malabsorption, diarrhea, and postinfectious complications. Cause-and-effect studies using a human enteropathogen to help inv

Acute appendicitis presenting with Klebsiella pneumoniae septicemia due to bacterial translocation.

Bacterial translocation (BT) is defined as the passage of viable bacteria from the gastrointestinal tract, across the intestinal wall, to the mesenteric lymph nodes or other extranodal sites and bloodstream. It has been shown in both animal and human studies and has been implicated as a source of sepsis in susceptible patients. Herein, a rare case of acute appendicitis in a nonimmunocompromised patient who presented with manifestations of Klebsiella pneumoniae septicemia, is described. Translocation of Klebsiella pneumoniae through the compromised appendix mucosa leading in dissemination of th

The effect of L-tryptophan on hemorrhagic shock induced bacterial translocation.

Hemorrhagic shock causes mucosal damage in intestine and it results in translocation of bacteria to distant organs. In this study, effects of various doses of L-Tryptophan on the prevention of bacterial translocation in hemorrhagic shock induced rabbits were investigated. This study was carried out on six groups, each was consisting of 10 rabbits. While any procedure was conducted on the rabbits in group 1 (as a control group), 1 x 10(10)Escherichia coli isolate were administered rabbits in the other groups by gavage. In groups 3, 4, 5, and 6, hemorrhagic shock was induced. After induction of

Obstructive jaundice, bacterial translocation and interdigestive small-bowel motility in rats.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Translocation of gut bacteria occurs in obstructive jaundice, the underlying mechanisms are unclear. We designed this experimental study to investigate the association between interdigestive motility and the pathogenesis of bacterial translocation during biliary obstruction. METHODS: Rats were fitted with jejunal myoelectrodes for the measurement of the interdigestive migrating motor complex (MMC) and with two cannulas in the proximal common bile duct (CBD) for exteriorization of biliary flow. This allowed measurement of MMCs under control conditions with an intact enterohepa
