Differences in ingestion and biodegradation of the melamine formaldehyde plastic by yellow mealworms Tenebrio molitor and superworms Zophobas atratus, and the prediction of functional gut microbes.

Plastics biodegradation by insect larvae is considered as a new strategy for plastic wastes treatment. To uncover the biodegradation of a more complex chemical polymer of melamine formaldehyde (MF) by insect larvae, two worm species of yellow mealworm Tenebrio molitor and superworm Zophobas atratus were fed on MF foam as sole diet for 45 days with sole bran diet as control. Although the MF foam consumption by yellow mealworms of 0.38 mg/d/g-larvae was almost 40% higher than that by superworms of 0.28 mg/d/g-larvae, a similar decrease of survival rates in both species were obtained at about 58%

Advances in Measuring the Biodegradability of a Hybrid Material Resulting from the Transformation of Plastic and Organic Waste with the Oyster Culinary-Medicinal Mushroom Pleurotus ostreatus (Agaricomycetes).

Fungi are recognized as among the most effective microbial agents for plastic degradation due to their production of extracellular enzymes, including lipases, cutinases, esterases, proteases, dehydrogenases, hydrolases, laccases, peroxidases, and oxidoreductases. These enzymes target ester and carbon-carbon bonds in plastics, breaking them down into smaller molecules that fungi can metabolize as carbon sources. In 2014, a process was patented in Colombia and the United States that utilizes macromycetes to transform various cafeteria wastes, including polyethylene, polypropylene, and polystyren

Recent advances in designing high-performance and enzymatically degradable plastics.

Plastics have become indispensable in modern life, yet their end-of-life waste continues to accumulate, causing severe environmental pollution and posing risks to ecosystems and human health. This urgent challenge has driven the development of sustainable plastics as alternatives to conventional persistent plastics, among which biodegradable plastics are particularly promising. Owing to their reduced environmental footprint and their ability to undergo mild biodegradation mediated by efficient enzymes, biodegradable plastics have attracted increasing attention from both academia and industry i

Degradation of plastic carrier bags in the marine environment.

There is considerable concern about the hazards that plastic debris presents to wildlife. Use of polymers that degrade more quickly than conventional plastics presents a possible solution to this problem. Here we investigate breakdown of two oxo-biodegradable plastics, compostable plastic and standard polyethylene in the marine environment. Tensile strength of all materials decreased during exposure, but at different rates. Compostable plastic disappeared from our test rig between 16 and 24 weeks whereas approximately 98% of the other plastics remained after 40 weeks. Some plastics require UV

Analysis of biological treatment technologies, their present infrastructures and suitability for biodegradable food packaging - A review.

Recently, there has been an increased demand for biodegradable plastics in the food packaging industry, especially for highly food soiled packaging items containing food/beverage solids that will not be recycled using a non-biological process. However, the increased usage of those materials have also raised concerns and confusion, as a major part of these biodegradable plastics are not effectively separated nor recycled. The lack of acceptance in recycling facilities, related to confusion with their conventional polymers counterparts, as well as short retention times of recycling facilities, o

In vivo and in vitro degradation and biological toxicity studies of polyesters with varying degradation rates.

The fragmentation of biodegradable plastics into "degradable particles" is an essential step during their degradation process. Investigating their in vivo degradation behaviors and toxicity differing from microplastics holds significant implications. In this study, we selected biodegradable polyesters with distinct degradation rates-polyglycolic acid (PGA) and its copolymer poly(butylene succinate-co-glycolate) (PBSG)-alongside non-biodegradable polyethylene terephthalate (PET) as a control. Using combined in vitro simulations and animal experiments, we assessed their degradation in simulated

Accumulation and release of organic pollutants by conventional and biodegradable microplastics in the marine environment.

The issue of microplastic (MP) litter in the aquatic environment and its capability of accumulating and/or releasing pollutants has been brought to light in recent years. Biodegradable plastics have been proposed as one of the different solutions to decrease environmental input of discarded plastics; however, their ability to accumulate and release pollutants once in the marine environment has not been assessed yet. In this study, we compare the accumulation and the release of a wide range of compounds by biodegradable (polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) and polybutylene succinate (PBS)) and conventi

Micro-nano structured bioplastics from natural biomass enabled by chitin nanofiber binders.

Renewable materials derived from biomass are promising alternatives to non-biodegradable petrochemical plastics. Herein, we present a method for producing high-performance bioplastics by using the regenerated chitin nanofibers (ChNFs) as the binder material for micro-scale biomass materials (bamboo microfibers or chitin microsheets). The multi-scale biomass fibers were processed into the slurry and subsequently dried to induce self-assembly. ChNFs adhere to micro-sized materials and form uniform nanoscale entanglements within their pores, enhancing the interfacial interactions among microscale

Biodegradation of poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate)/poly (lactic acid) under food waste composting: CO2 emissions and compost maturity characteristics.

Substituting conventional plastics with biodegradable plastics represents a promising mitigation strategy for plastic pollution. However, the non-degraded bioplastics can partially result in a heterogeneous, diffusion-limited, and metabolically suppressed state in the compost, thus leading to the composting unstability. This study employed three levels of additions (2, 8 and 16%) of poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate)/poly (lactic acid) (PBAT/PLA) bioplastics to canteen food waste to investigate the impact of biodegradable plastics addition on bioplastic degradation efficiency and compost

Biodegradable polylactic acid microplastics rewire the soil food web by impeding amoebae predation.

Soil amoebae function as both keystone microbial predators and sensitive indicators of soil ecosystem health. Although polylactic acid (PLA) biodegradable plastics are increasingly adopted to reduce persistent plastic pollution, their ecological impacts, particularly during the active degradation phase, remain poorly understood. In this study, we established multiple co-culture interfaces to investigate the interactions and effects between soil amoebae and polylactic acid microplastics (PLA MPs). Our results show that PLA MPs fundamentally reshape amoeboid behavioral strategies and restructure

Simulated gastrointestinal digestion of two different sources of biodegradable microplastics and the influence on gut microbiota.

Biodegradable plastics, were considered environmentally friendly, may produce more microplastic particles (MPs) within the same period and exert more pronounced adverse effects on human health than traditional non-biodegradable plastics. Thus, this study investigated the changes of two kinds of biodegradable MPs from different sources in the digestive tract by using simulated digestion and fermentation models in vitro, with particle size, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and gel permeation chromatography (GPC) analysis, and their implications on the gut microbiota were detected by full-lengt

Deciphering the Formation Mechanism of Recalcitrant Microplastics during Bioplastic Degradation in Aerobic Environment.

Biodegradable plastics are frequently characterized as materials capable of complete mineralization under specific environmental conditions. Although the application of bio-based substitutes for traditional plastics has become widespread, numerous studies have reported that these materials also contribute to microplastics contamination and plastic pollution. However, the formation and degradation dynamics of recalcitrant microplastics remain insufficiently understood. This study investigated the degradation behavior of two typical compostable polyester plastics over a 100-day period under aero

PBAT is biodegradable but what about the toxicity of its biodegradation products?

CONTEXT: Poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) is a biodegradable plastic. It was introduced to the plastics market in 1998 and since then has been widely used around the world. The main idea of this research is to perform quantum chemical calculations to study the potential toxicity of PBAT and its degradation products. We analyzed the electron transfer capacity to determine its potential toxicity. We found that biodegradable products formed with benzene rings are as good electron acceptors as PBAT and OOH•. Our results indicate that the biodegradation products are potentially as tox

Growth and chlorophyll-a responses of marine microalgae to biodegradable polypropylene microplastic leachates: an initial toxicity assessment.

Biodegradable plastics are increasingly promoted as alternatives to conventional plastics; however, their degradation may release leachates containing potentially harmful compounds. Complementary field observations on microplastic occurrence along Indonesian coasts underscore the environmental relevance of this study. In marine environments, such leachates may affect algal communities. This study evaluated the toxicity of leachates derived from biodegradable polypropylene (PP) microplastics on three marine microalgal species (Chlorella sp., Tetraselmis sp., and Navicula sp.). Polylactic acid micro/nanoplastic-induced hepatotoxicity: Investigating food and air sources via multi-omics.

Micro/nanoplastics (MNPs) are detected in human liver, and pose significant risks to human health. Oral exposure to MNPs derived from non-biodegradable plastics can induce toxicity in mouse liver. Similarly, nasal exposure to non-biodegradable plastics can cause airway dysbiosis in mice. However, the hepatotoxicity induced by foodborne and airborne biodegradable MNPs remains poorly understood. Here we show the hepatotoxic effects of biodegradable polylactic acid (PLA) MNPs through multi-omics analysis of various biological samples from mice, including gut, fecal, nasal, lung, liver, and blood

Anaerobic Biodegradation of Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyhexanoate) under Flooded Paddy Soil Conditions.

Plastic pollution in aquatic environments has become a global concern, and agricultural plastics are one potential source. Biodegradable plastics have been developed as an alternative; however, their degradation behavior under flooded soil conditions remains unclear. Therefore, we herein investigated the degradation of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyhexanoate) (PHBH), a biodegradable polymer, using an in vitro system simulating paddy soil environments. Microcosm experiments were conducted under different temperatures (14, 25, and 35°C) and soil-water ratios (1:1, 1:10, 1:100, and 1:1,000)

Preparation of bioplastic consisting of salmon milt DNA.

The microplastic that pollutes the ocean is a serious problem around the world. The bioplastic consisting of biopolymers which is degraded in nature, is one of the strategies to solve this problem. Although the bioplastics consisting of protein, polysaccharide, polylactic acid, etc., have been reported, which consist of DNA, one of the most important materials in the genetic process, have not been reported to the best of our knowledge. In addition, a large amount of DNA-containing materials, such as salmon milts, is discarded as industrial waste around the world. Therefore, we demonstrated the

Fate of a biodegradable plastic in forest soil: Dominant tree species and forest types drive changes in microbial community assembly, influence the composition of plastisphere, and affect poly(butylene succinate-co-adipate) degradation.

Poly(butylene succinate-co-adipate) (PBSA) degradation and its plastisphere microbiome in cropland soils have been studied; however, such knowledge is limited in the case of forest ecosystems. In this context, we investigated: i) the impact of forest types (conifer and broadleaved forests) on the plastisphere microbiome and its community assembly, ii) their link to PBSA degradation, and iii) the identities of potential microbial keystone taxa. We determined that forest type significantly affected microbial richness (F = 5.26-9.88, P = 0.034 to 0.006) and fungal community composition (R2 = 0.38
