The risk of metabolic syndrome (MetS) has been attributed to antipsychotic use in psychiatric patients. To date, there is limited data on the relationship between antipsychotic polypharmacy and MetS in patients with schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder and bipolar disorder. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the rate of MetS in patients with these disorders receiving antipsychotic monotherapy and polypharmacy. We conducted a cross-sectional study on patients seen between January 2017 and December 2020, collecting data on the class, type, route of administration and number of antipsychotics

Nonadherence to medication regimens is frequently reported in bipolar I disorder (BDI) patients. However, little is known about the relationship between cognitive functions and adherence in BDI. To establish possible associations between medication adherence and cognitive function in patients with BDI. A total of 110 inpatients with BDI were subjected to the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis I Disorder, Morisky 8-Item Medication Adherence Scale, Young Mania Rating Scale, Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised, Wechsler memory scale (WMS) and Wisconsin card sorting test (WCST). AIM: Social impairment is common in individuals with bipolar disorder (BD), although its role in youths at high-risk for BD (i.e., mood symptoms in the context of a family history of BD) is not well understood. Social impairment takes many forms including social withdrawal, relational aggression, physical aggression, and victimization. The aim of this study was to explore the links between social impairment and clinical symptoms in youth at high-risk for BD.
METHODS: The sample included 127 youths with elevations in mood symptoms (depression or hypomania) and at least one first and/or second

BACKGROUND: Neurophysiology including P300, that is a typical index of event-related potential, may be potential biomarkers for bipolar disorder (BD) and it can be useful towards elucidating the pathophysiology of BD. However, previous findings from P300 studies were inconsistent due to the heterogeneity of research methods, which make it difficult to understand the neurobiological significance of them. The aim of this study is to conduct a meta-analysis on P300 in patients with BD.
METHOD: A literature search was conducted using PubMed to identify studies that compared P300 event-related pot

INTRODUCTION: The course of bipolar disorder (BD) is characterized by relapse and remission periods. Although the symptoms show a significant and sometimes almost complete improvement during remission, the patients' functioning levels may be lower compared to the premorbid period. This study aimed to compare the functional levels between patients with BD during remission period and healthy controls and to evaluate the factors related to the functional status of the patients.
METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, functioning levels of the BD-I patients, who were in remission for three months

Mood states in bipolar disorder appear to be closely linked to changes in sleep and circadian function. It has been suggested that hypersensitivity of the circadian system to light may be a trait vulnerability for bipolar disorder. Healthy persons with emotional-behavioural traits associated with bipolar disorder also appear to exhibit problems with circadian rhythms, which may be associated with individual differences in light sensitivity. This study investigated the melanopsin-driven post-illumination pupil response (PIPR) in relation to emotional-behavioural traits associated with bipolar d

OBJECTIVE: Bipolar Spectrum Disorder (BSD) is a severe psychiatric disorder associated with a host of deleterious sequelae. While researchers have found a robust link between parenting variables and psychopathology for youth with BSD, few have examined positive parenting factors and associated psychopathology for these youth. Furthermore, conclusions from extant literature are hindered by a) exploring a limited range of parenting variables and b) employing retrospective reports of parenting with adult populations. This study addressed these gaps by examining how a range of contemporaneously-me

BACKGROUND: Previous resting-state electroencephalography studies have consistently shown that lithium enhances delta and theta oscillations in default mode networks. Cognitive task based networks differ from resting-state networks and this is the first study to investigate effects of lithium on evoked and event-related beta oscillatory responses of patients with bipolar disorder.
METHODS: The study included 16 euthymic patients with bipolar disorder on lithium monotherapy, 22 euthymic medication-free patients with bipolar disorder and 21 healthy participants. The maximum peak-to-peak amplitu

BACKGROUND: Large-scale T1-weighted MRI studies have established grey-matter abnormalities in bipolar disorder (BD), with our group contributing to consensus findings. However, structural connectivity, particularly within emotion- and reward-related circuits, remains poorly understood. Diffusion-weighted MRI (dMRI) enables investigation of white-matter pathways, yet prior work is constrained by small samples, methodological heterogeneity, and unclear medication effects. We conducted the largest dMRI network analysis in BD, relating symptom burden and polypharmacy to tractography-derived connec

BACKGROUND: Emotional processing abnormalities are a core feature of bipolar disorder (BD), yet neuroimaging studies have yielded inconsistent results. The age-related divergence between pediatric (PBD) and adult (ABD) bipolar disorder has been increasingly highlighted by physiological and clinical evidence. Therefore, previous findings were integrated to construct the emotional networks of PBD and ABD, with the aim of elucidating their age-related divergence.
METHODS: Activation likelihood estimation was performed on 17 PBD (340 patients, 341 controls) and 20 ABD (681 patients, 582 controls)

This study aimed to explore the relationship between Bipolar Disorder (BD) and endocrine hormones, as well as the relationship between psychotropics and endocrine hormones. We recruited 55 drug-naïve women patients with BD, 66 long-term medicated women patients with BD, and 53 healthy controls. Serum levels of thyroid hormones, reproductive hormones, and insulin were measured in all participants. Clinical symptoms of depression and mania were measured in all patients with BD. After controlling for confounding factors, drug-naïve patients showed higher levels of free triiodothyronine (FT3), FT3

INTRODUCTION: Anomalous cerebral blood flow (CBF) is evident in bipolar disorder (BD), however the extent to which CBF reflects peripheral vascular function in BD is unknown. This study investigated endothelial function, an index of early atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease risk, in relation to CBF among youth with BD.
METHODS: Participants included 113 youth, 13-20 years old (66 BD; 47 healthy controls [HC]). CBF was measured using arterial spin labeling with 3T MRI. Region of interest analyses (ROI; global grey matter, middle frontal gyrus, anterior cingulate cortex, temporal cortex,

Deficits in inhibitory function are assumed to underlie psychopathology in bipolar disorder (BD), especially in states of mania. A subdomain of inhibition, semantic inhibition (SI), referring to the suppression of irrelevant word meanings, may underlie formal thought disorder, such as flights of ideas. In the present study, we investigated SI in patients with BD during semantic ambiguity resolution using behavioral and event-related potential (ERP) measures. We presented 14 patients with BD with current manic, hypomanic, or mixed clinical states and 28 healthy controls sequentially with word t

INTRODUCTION: Current classification of bipolar disorder (BD) in type i or type ii, however useful, may be insufficient to provide relevant clinical information in some patients. As a result, complementary classifications are being proposed, like the predominant polarity (PP) based, which is defined as a clear tendency in the patient to present relapses in the manic or depressive poles.
METHODS: We carried out a search in PubMed and Web of Science databases, following the Preferred Items for Reporting of Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses -PRISMA- guidelines, to identify studies about BD re

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated how frontal white matter (WM) alterations in patients with bipolar I disorder (BD-I) are linked to motivational dysregulation, often reported in the form of risk-taking and impulsivity, and whether structure-function relations in patients might differ from healthy subjects (HC).
METHOD: We acquired diffusion data from 24 euthymic BD-I patients and 24 controls, to evaluate WM integrity of selected frontal tracts. Risk-taking was assessed by the Cambridge Gambling Task and impulsivity by self-report with the Barratt-Impulsiveness Scale.
RESULTS: BD-I patients

BACKGROUND: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adults can resemble, and often co-occurs with, bipolar disorder (BD) and borderline personality disorder (BPD). This can lead to mistaken diagnoses and ineffective treatment, resulting in potentially serious adverse consequences. All three conditions can substantially impair well-being and functioning, while BD and BPD are associated with suicidality.
OBJECTIVES: To update clinicians on the overlap and differences in the symptomatology of ADHD versus BD and BPD in adults; differential diagnosis of ADHD from BD and BPD in adults; a
