Effect of increased whole blood viscosity on regional blood flows in chronically hypoxemic lambs.

In chronic hypoxemia blood flow and oxygen supply to vital organs are maintained, but to nonvital organs they are decreased. We measured organ blood flows (microspheres) and whole blood viscosity in 10 chronically hypoxemic lambs, with an atrial septal defect and pulmonary stenosis, and in 8 control lambs. Vascular hindrance (resistance/viscosity) was calculated to determine to what extent the effect of increased blood viscosity on organ blood flow was compensated for by a decrease in vascular tone. Arterial oxygen saturation was decreased (68 +/- 10 vs. 91 +/- 3%, P < 0.001), and both hemoglo

Changes in the Blood Viscosity in Patients With SARS-CoV-2 Infection.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is caused by a novel virus known as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). SARS-CoV-2-induced hyperinflammation together with alteration of plasma proteins, erythrocyte deformability, and platelet activation, may affect blood viscosity. Thus, this review aimed to study the link between SARS-CoV-2 infection and alteration of blood viscosity in COVID-19 patients. In order to review findings related to hyperviscosity in COVID-19, we suggested a protocol for narrative review of related published COVID-19 articles. Hyperviscosity syndrome i

The role of blood viscosity in the development and progression of coronary artery disease.

BACKGROUND: Although a great deal of attention has been directed to the risk factors for atherosclerotic coronary artery disease, relatively little research has been focused on the role of the circulating blood itself. OBJECTIVES: To review the possible role of increased plasma viscosity and decreased cellular deformability in the pathogenesis of atherosclerotic coronary artery disease. SUMMARY: Increased plasma viscosity or decreased erythrocyte deformability may reduce blood flow in areas where blood flow is already low, such as at arterial branch points and bifurcations as well as in adva

Hematocrit and whole blood viscosity in newborns: analysis of 100 cases.

Hematocrit (Hct) and whole blood viscosity was studied at a mean age of ten hours in 100 neonates. Group A (n = 25), were term normal newborns, Group B (n = 25) were preterms, Group C (n = 20) were term small for gestation (SGA) and Group D (n = 30) had perinatal hypoxia. Blood viscosity was estimated in all cases at shear rates 94.5, 51.2, 20.4 and 8.1 and intergroup variability in viscosity compared at shear rate 51.2. The mean hematocrit (Hct) (59.4%) and viscosity (8.2 cps) was higher in Group A as compared to other groups, but the difference was not significant (p greater than 0.05). The

Intravenous immunoglobulin increases plasma viscosity without parallel rise in blood pressure.

WHAT IS KNOWN AND OBJECTIVE: Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) is a commonly used therapy for autoimmune disease, but may cause chronic hypertension and thrombosis. We determined whether: (i) IVIg systematically affects blood pressure in the short term; (ii) acute changes in plasma viscosity because of IVIg correlate with blood pressure effects; (iii) effects of IVIg on acute blood pressure are related to baseline blood pressure or hypertension status and (iv) IVIg influences plasma markers of inflammation, anticardiolipin antibodies and homocysteine as additional putative prothrombotic risk f

[Blood viscosity and red cell deformability in primary hyperlipoproteinemia (author's transl)].

In patients with primary hyperlipoproteinemia (types IIa, IV, IIb) we determined by means of a Wells-Brookfield plateconeviscometer and an Ubbelohde capillary-viscometer the serum-, plasma-, apparent and relative apparent blood viscosity as well as the red cell deformability with a filtration technique. All parameters were found to be significantly changed in comparison to those of a normolipidemic control-group: The viscosity values of type IIb showed the greatest increase and of type IIa the smallest, while the red cell deformability was reduced in all types to the same degree.

Elevated blood viscosity is associated with dysautonomia in long COVID symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Long COVID is associated with elevated inflammatory and antibody levels. Elevated plasma proteins can increase blood viscosity and decrease blood flow. Our aim is to evaluate if blood viscosity is associated with long COVID outcomes. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study and included a sample of patients enrolled in our long COVID clinic. We estimated whole blood viscosity (WBV) using two previously validated formulas and compared it with the NASA lean test, COMPASS-31 scale as measures of dysautonomia and the symptom burden as measured by the modified COVID-19 Yorkshire s

Whole blood viscosity in the evaluation of thrombogenic milieu in mitral stenosis.

Aim: We aimed to assess the association of whole blood with thromboembolic milieu in significant mitral stenosis patients. Methodology & results: We included 122 patients and classified patients into two groups as having thrombogenic milieu, thrombogenic milieu (+), otherwise patients without thrombogenic milieu, thrombogenic milieu (-). Whole blood viscosity (WBV) in both shear rates were higher in thrombogenic milieu (+) group comparing with thrombogenic milieu (-). WBV at high shear rate and WBV at low shear rate parameters were moderately correlated with grade of spontaneous echo contrast.

Is hemoglobin desaturation related to blood viscosity in athletes during exercise?

Several studies have suggested that athletes with low hemoglobin saturation during exercise may experience impaired pulmonary blood gas exchange during maximal exercise. Blood viscosity may be implicated in exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage in race horses. We hypothesized that blood rheology may contribute to impaired gas exchange and reduced hemoglobin saturation during exercise in humans. A group of 20 highly trained endurance athletes participated in this study, 9 with low hemoglobin saturation during exercise (Low-SpO (2) group) and 11 with normal hemoglobin saturation (High-SpO (2) gr

[Usefulness of blood and plasma viscosity measurements in the evaluation of arteriopathic patients].

Blood viscosity represents the internal friction of the blood, in other terms, its resistance to be deformed and to flow under a tangential force. This function is conditioned by the intrinsic characteristics of blood and the geometry of the system in which flow occurs. Thus, any in vitro (or ex vivo) system of measurement of blood viscosity represents a relatively approximate evaluation of the ratio between intertial forces and viscous resistance. However, the possibility of measuring blood viscosity in a reproducible way provided the opportunity of identifying some clinical conditions associ

The viscosity of red blood cell membranes in patients with beta-thalassaemia.

The purpose of this work was to study the viscoelastic behaviour of the red blood cell membrane (RBCM) in cells from patients with beta-thalassaemia and to investigate whether the precipitated haemoglobin, which is one of the main features of thalassaemic syndromes, influences the membrane viscosity. RBCM viscosities were determined using the micropipet aspiration method. A negative pressure of about 50 Pa was applied in steps at the membrane surface so as to cause partial aspiration of the cell and the entry process was analyzed automatically by a TV-line analyzer. This analysis enabled estim

Adrenomedullin in Blood Plasma in Normotensive and Spontaneous Hypertensive Rats: Effect of Increased Blood Viscosity.

We measured the plasma levels of adrenomedullin in normotensive Wistar rats and spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) was investigated, and evaluated changes in its level under conditions of increased blood viscosity. Blood viscosity was increased by the method of isovolumic hemoconcentration (replacement of 10% of circulating blood with the same volume of packed erythrocytes of donor rats). The initial concentration of adrenomedullin in Wistar rats was 1912 ± 195 pg/ml, while in SHR it was 40% lower (p = 0.007). In Wistar rats, an increase in blood viscosity was accompanied by a decrease in t

Cerebral blood flow and blood viscosity in patients with polycythaemia secondary to hypoxic lung disease.

Blood viscosity, cerebral blood flow (CBF) and cerebral oxygen carriage (CBF X arterial oxygen content) were measured in 12 patients with polycythaemia secondary to hypoxic lung disease. CBF and cerebral oxygen carriage were both significantly higher than in a comparative group of 20 patients with raised packed cell volumes and normal lung function. The patients with secondary polycythaemia then underwent venesection and their mean packed cell volume fell from 0.613 to 0.495. This led to a consistent reduction in blood viscosity, which fell by 44% at a low shear rate (0.67/s) and 33% at a high

Nanoswimmers statistical mechanics: Unlocking whole-blood viscosity sensing for tumor microenvironment.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The ability to sense the biological microenvironment surrounding early-stage tumor tissues is critical for tumorigenesis tracing and tumor detection and treatment. An efficient tumor microenvironment (TME) sensing strategy remains a significant challenge. We propose a novel "seeing is sensing" approach that has the potential to discern the whole-blood viscosity (WBV) information of the TME by using a swarm of nanoswimmers (NS). METHODS: In this study, we employ statistical mechanics methods to derive the relationship between the aggregation of NS in the microscale an

Hematocrit, volume expander, temperature, and shear rate effects on blood viscosity.

UNLABELLED: Our goal was to determine and predict the effects of temperature, shear rate, hematocrit, and different volume expanders on blood viscosity in conditions mimicking deep hypothermia for cardiac operations. Blood was obtained from six healthy adults. Dilutions were prepared to hematocrits of 35%, 30%, 22.5%, and 15% using plasma, 0.9% NaCl, 5% human albumin, and 6% hydroxyethyl starch. Viscosity was measured over a range of shear rates (4.5-450 s(-1)) and temperature (0 degrees -37 degrees C). A parametric expression for predicting blood viscosity based on the study variables was dev

Blood viscosity factors and occlusive arterial disease in renal transplant recipients.

29 cadaveric renal transplant recipients were assessed clinically for evidence of occlusive arterial disease prior to undergoing blood viscosity studies. Nineteen patients had manifest arterial disease (myocardial infarction, cerebral thrombosis, angina, intermittent claudication, absent peripheral pulses), while ten were free from vascular complications. Patients with arterial disease showed significant elevations of plasma viscosity (p less than 0.005), aggregation of red cells measured both at 37 and 20 degrees C (p less than 0.05), fibrinogen (p less than 0.005), serum triglyceride (p less
