Ebola, Zika and the International Health Regulations - implications for Port Health Preparedness.

BACKGROUND: The outbreak of Ebola Virus Disease in West Africa in 2014-2015 was unprecedented in terms of its scale and consequence.  This, together with the emergence of Zika virus as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern in 2016, has again highlighted the potential for disease to spread across international borders and provided an impetus for countries to review their Port Health preparedness. This report reviews the legislative framework and actions taken under this framework in advancing and improving Port Health preparedness in Ireland, in response to the declaration of the P

Genetic analysis of four human rabies cases reported in Turkey between 2002 and 2006.

Rabies remains endemic in many regions of Turkey. As a consequence, humans are at risk of this fatal disease through encounters with rabid animals. The present study describes four recent cases of rabies in humans. Subsequent phylogenetic analysis of the rabies virus isolates obtained from each case demonstrates the distinct geographical distribution of rabies virus variants within Turkey. The study suggests that rabies virus translocation has occurred across Turkey and might be the source of the emergence of a genetically similar variant in the Golan Heights region on the Israeli/Syrian borde

The Alarming Eastward Front of Cassava Mosaic Disease Reported in Guinea and Sierra Leone Reaches Western Côte d'Ivoire.

Cassava mosaic begomoviruses are a major threat to cassava cultivation in Africa. The virulent Ugandan variant of the East African cassava mosaic virus (EACMV-Ug), which caused substantial damage to cassava production in Uganda in the 1990s and which was previously confined to East and Central Africa, was recently found to be well established in Guinea and Sierra Leone in West Africa. Molecular analysis of cassava leaf samples from a nationwide cassava fields survey conducted in Côte d'Ivoire in 2022 suggested the absence of EACMV-Ug in the country in 2022. Given the proximity of some confirme

Impact of Coronavirus Disease 2019 Public Health Measures on Detections of Influenza and Respiratory Syncytial Virus in Children During the 2020 Australian Winter.

Public health measures targeting coronavirus disease 2019 have potential to impact transmission of other respiratory viruses. We found 98.0% and 99.4% reductions in respiratory syncytial virus and influenza detections, respectively, in Western Australian children through winter 2020 despite schools reopening. Border closures have likely been important in limiting external introductions.

Case Management of Imported Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever, Senegal, July 2023.

We report an imported Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever case in Senegal. The patient received PCR confirmation of virus infection 10 days after symptom onset. We identified 46 patient contacts in Senegal; 87.7% were healthcare professionals. Strengthening border crossing and community surveillance systems can help reduce the risks of infectious disease transmission.

Isolating the first strain of epizootic hemorrhagic disease virus serotype 2 (EHDV-2) in mainland China.

Epizootic hemorrhagic disease virus (EHDV) belongs to the genus Orbivirus of Sedoreoviridae, and is the pathogen of epizootic hemorrhagic disease (EHD) which is lethal for wild white-tailed deer and sometimes cattle. Seven confirmed (i.e. EHDV-1, 2, 4-8) and two putative novel serotypes of EHDV have so far been identified worldwide. In Asia, the strains of serotype 2 are regarded as the most virulent. Although all serotypes except for serotypes 2 and 4 have been isolated in mainland China, no disease has been reported since 1985. However, an EHDV-2 strain was isolated from Culicoides collected

Beyond Ebola Virus in the Largest Documented Bundibugyo Virus Outbreak.

The ongoing Bundibugyo virus disease outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda has become the largest documented outbreak caused by this orthoebolavirus and already ranks as the second-largest Ebola disease outbreak recorded in history. This review highlights its major public health relevance, given its cross-border spread, substantial mortality burden, high clinical severity, infections among healthcare workers, and the lack of any approved vaccine or specific treatment for Bundibugyo virus disease. We discuss the epidemiological and virological significance of this exceptio

Identification of a Newly Isolated Getah Virus in the China-Laos Border, China.

In this study, we isolated a virus strain (YN12031) from specimens of Armigeres subalbatus collected in the China-Laos border. BHK-21 cells infected with YN12031 exhibited an evident cytopathic effect (CPE) 32 h post-infection. The virus particles were spherical, 70 nm in diameter, and enveloped; they also featured surface fibers. Molecular genetic analysis revealed that YN12031 was closely related to alpha viruses such as Chikungunya virus and Sindbis virus, and located in the same clade as MM2021, the prototype of Getahvirus (GETV) isolated in Malaysia in 1955. Phylogenetic analysis of the E

Congenital infection of pigs with ruminant-type pestiviruses.

Congenital infections of pigs were induced with two ruminant-type pestiviruses isolated from pigs. One of the viruses was bovine viral diarrhoea virus-like and the other border disease virus-like. Both produced symptoms similar to those observed with low virulence strains of classical swine fever virus. A striking effect of persistent virus infection in post-natal life was stunting in viraemic animals. It was also shown that a congenitally infected pig shed virus for 2.5 years and in sufficient quantity to infect other pigs, even by indirect contact. Unlike ruminants, congenitally infected pig

Ebola Virus Disease Preparedness Assessment and Risk Mapping in Uganda, August-September 2018.

Uganda's proximity to the tenth Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) presents a high risk of cross-border EVD transmission. Uganda conducted preparedness and risk-mapping activities to strengthen capacity to prevent EVD importation and spread from cross-border transmission. We adapted the World Health Organization (WHO) EVD Consolidated Preparedness Checklist to assess preparedness in 11 International Health Regulations domains at the district level, health facilities, and points of entry; the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Borde

Challenges to Ebola preparedness during an ongoing outbreak: An analysis of borderland livelihoods and trust in Uganda.

Ebola Virus Disease in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) was declared a public health emergency of international concern on July 17, 2019. The first case to cross the border into Uganda in June 2019 demonstrates the importance of better understanding border dynamics in a context of Ebola. This paper adopts a political economy approach to contextualize epidemic response programs conducted in moderate- and high-risk border districts in Uganda, through a qualitative study with 287 participants. To that end, our aim was to describe the historical underpinnings of the borderlands context; the

Evaluation of the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) preparedness and readiness program in Uganda: 2018 to 2019.

INTRODUCTION: the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) declared its 10thoutbreak of Ebola virus disease (EVD) in 42 years on August 1st 2018. The rapid rise and spread of the EVD outbreak threatened health security in neighboring countries and global health security. The United Nations developed an EVD preparedness and readiness (EVD-PR) plan to assist the nine neighboring countries to advance their critical preparedness measures. In Uganda, EVD-PR was implemented between 2018 and 2019. The World Health Organization commissioned an independent evaluation to assess the impact of the investment in

Serosurvey of pathogens in domestic dogs on the border of Noël Kempff Mercado National Park, Bolivia.

The threat of disease transmission from domestic animals to wildlife has become recognized as an increasing concern within the wildlife community in recent years. Domestic dogs pose a significant risk as reservoirs for infectious diseases, especially for wild canids. As part of a multifaceted ecologic study of maned wolves and other canids in the large, remote Noël Kempff Mercado National Park (NKMNP) in northeastern Bolivia, 40 domestic dogs in two villages and at two smaller settlements bordering the national park were sampled for exposure to canine diseases. High levels of exposure were fou

Intervention To Stop Transmission of Imported Pneumonic Plague - Uganda, 2019.

Plague, an acute zoonosis caused by Yersinia pestis, is endemic in the West Nile region of northwestern Uganda and neighboring northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) (1-4). The illness manifests in multiple clinical forms, including bubonic and pneumonic plague. Pneumonic plague is rare, rapidly fatal, and transmissible from person to person via respiratory droplets. On March 4, 2019, a patient with suspected pneumonic plague was hospitalized in West Nile, Uganda, 4 days after caring for her sister, who had come to Uganda from DRC and died shortly thereafter, and 2 days after area

The risk of global Ebola virus spread is low: epidemiology of Ebola disease cases outside Africa, 1976 to May 2026.

Following the Bundibugyo virus disease outbreak reported in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in May 2026, we reviewed all known Ebola disease cases outside Africa and found that intercontinental transmission risk remains low. We identified 28 confirmed epidemic-linked cases outside Africa; only four involved travellers with latent infection whose symptoms were detected after border screening. Excluding medically evacuated cases, the crude overall risk since 2000 was 0.17 Ebola disease cases outside Africa per 1,000 reported cases in Africa.

Lassa virus-infected rodents in refugee camps in Guinea: a looming threat to public health in a politically unstable region.

Rodent-borne and other communicable diseases are of particular concern to vulnerable populations in complex humanitarian emergencies. We assessed the risk of Lassa fever to refugees and humanitarian aid workers in the Forest Region of Guinea by trapping rodents and testing them for the presence of Lassa virus infection. Our study provides a point prevalence of Lassa virus-infected rodents in various refugee camps in Guinea, suggesting that the risk of disease may be highest in camps further south toward the border with Liberia. The methodology used represents a potential model for rapid public

Case Definitions Used During the First 6 Months of the 10th Ebola Virus Disease Outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo - Four Neighboring Countries, August 2018-February 2019.

On August 1, 2018, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) declared its 10th Ebola virus disease (Ebola) outbreak in an area with a high volume of cross-border population movement to and from neighboring countries. The World Health Organization (WHO) designated Rwanda, South Sudan, and Uganda as the highest priority countries for Ebola preparedness because of the high risk for cross-border spread from DRC (1). Countries might base their disease case definitions on global standards; however, historical context and perceived risk often affect why countries modify and adapt definitions over ti
