A purified extract of a blood-borne satiety factor, called satietin, was injected into the cerebral ventricles of rats that were either fed ad libitum or were food deprived. The animals were killed 2 h after injection and their brains subsequently sectioned and stained for Fos-like immunoreactivity (Fos-IR) to determine the putative sites of action for satietin in the brain. Fos-IR was induced in only a few locations, the most prominent sites being the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis, the central nucleus of the amygdala, and the parvocellular division of the paraventricular nucleus of the

BACKGROUND: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that frequently persists into adulthood and is linked to alterations in fronto-striatal circuitry and dopaminergic signaling. Brain iron is essential for dopamine synthesis and neural metabolism and can be indexed in vivo using quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM), which reflects regional magnetic susceptibility. Pediatric studies have mostly reported reduced tissue iron susceptibility in ADHD, but data in adults are limited. This study investigated regional susceptibility in adults with ADHD, it

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a complex neurodegenerative condition that leads to widespread disruption of large-scale brain networks and is further complicated by substantial individual variability in symptomology, progression rates, and treatment response. Consequently, the investigation of individual differences in networks measured via resting state functional connectivity (RSFC) may provide insight. However, most RSFC studies are unable to identify interindividual differences due to poor reliability and group average network definitions. "Precision" RSFC addresses these shortcom

Dystonia is one of the most prevalent movement disorders, but its neural substrates have remained enigmatic despite decades of research. Brain lesions leading to dystonia offer unique causal inference that could lend insight into the neural networks driving the disorder. Here, we studied the published cases of lesions causing dystonia to a variety of different body parts (n=179) and used lesion network mapping to test whether lesion locations mapped to a common brain network. Specificity was investigated by comparing the findings to 216 lesions causing other movement disorders, and 499 lesions

BACKGROUND: Hierarchical architecture is a fundamental organizational principle of the human brain. Previous studies have suggested that posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) may be characterized as disorders in the cerebral hierarchical organization. However, the specific abnormalities and underlying mechanisms are unclear.
PURPOSE: To investigate whether there are disorders of cerebral hierarchical organization in patients with PTSD and their underlying mechanisms of alteration.
STUDY TYPE: Prospective, case control.

PURPOSE: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) subjects show significant white matter injury, including myelin changes in several brain areas, potentially from impaired glial cells, contributing to increased iron levels that escalate neurodegeneration, but brain iron loads are unclear. Our aim was to examine regional brain iron load, using T2∗-relaxometry, in OSA adults before and after continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) treatment over controls.
METHODS: We performed T2∗-weighted imaging using a 3.0-T MRI scanner on 35 OSA adults, who were followed after 3- and 9- mo CPAP treatment, and 67 co

OBJECTIVE: The central and autonomic nervous systems are deemed complex dynamic systems, wherein each system as a whole shows features that the individual system sub-components do not. They also continuously interact to maintain body homeostasis and appropriate react to endogenous and exogenous stimuli. Such interactions are comprehensively referred to functional brain-heart interplay (BHI). Nevertheless, it remains uncertain whether this interaction also exhibits complex characteristics, that is, whether the dynamics of the entire nervous system inherently demonstrate complex behavior, or if

IMPORTANCE: It remains unclear why lesions in some locations cause epilepsy while others do not. Identifying the brain regions or networks associated with epilepsy by mapping these lesions could inform prognosis and guide interventions.
OBJECTIVE: To assess whether lesion locations associated with epilepsy map to specific brain regions and networks.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This case-control study used lesion location and lesion network mapping to identify the brain regions and networks associated with epilepsy in a discovery data set of patients with poststroke epilepsy and contro

BACKGROUND: Brain functional connectivity (FC) analyses based on magneto/electroencephalography (M/EEG) signals have yet to exploit the intrinsic high-dimensional information. Typically, these analyses are constrained to regions of interest to avoid the curse of dimensionality, with the latter leading to conservative hypothesis testing.
NEW METHOD: We removed such constraint by estimating high-dimensional source-based M/EEG-FC using cluster-permutation statistic (CPS) and demonstrated the feasibility of this approach by identifying resting-state changes in mild cognitive impairment (MCI), a p

OBJECTIVE: Holmes tremor is a debilitating movement disorder with limited treatment options. Lesions causing Holmes tremor can occur in multiple different brain locations, leaving the neuroanatomical substrate unclear. Here, we test whether lesion locations that cause Holmes tremor map to a connected brain circuit and whether this circuit might serve as a useful therapeutic target.
METHODS: Case reports of Holmes tremor caused by focal brain lesions were identified through a systematic literature search. Connectivity between each lesion location and the rest of the brain was computed using re

While transplantation represents a key tool for assessing in vivo functionality of neural stem cells and their suitability for neural repair, little is known about the integration of grafted neurons into the host brain circuitry. Rabies virus-based retrograde tracing has developed into a powerful approach for visualizing synaptically connected neurons. Here, we combine this technique with light sheet fluorescence microscopy (LSFM) to visualize transplanted cells and connected host neurons in whole-mouse brain preparations. Combined with co-registration of high-precision three-dimensional magne

OBJECTIVE Resection of focal brain lesions involves maximizing the resection while preserving brain function. Mapping brain function has entered a new era focusing on distributed connectivity networks at "rest," that is, in the absence of a specific task or stimulus, requiring minimal participant engagement. Central to this frame shift has been the development of methods for the rapid assessment of whole-brain connectivity with functional MRI (fMRI) involving blood oxygenation level-dependent imaging. The authors appraised the feasibility of fMRI-based mapping of a repertoire of functional con

Several magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies to date have investigated brain abnormalities in association with the diagnosis of pathological gambling (PG), but very few of these have specifically searched for brain volume differences between PG patients and healthy volunteers (HV). To investigate brain volume differences between PG patients and HV, 30 male never-treated PG patients (DSM-IV-TR criteria) and 30 closely matched HV without history of psychiatric disorders in the past 2 years underwent structural magnetic resonance imaging with a 1.5-T instrument. Using Freesurfer software, we

Theories of the pathophysiology of schizophrenia have implicated the hippocampus, but controversy remains regarding hippocampal abnormalities in patients with schizophrenia. In vivo studies of hippocampal anatomy using high resolution magnetic resonance scanning and manual methods for volumetric measurement have yielded inconclusive results, perhaps because of the normal variability in hippocampal volume and the error involved in manual measurement techniques. To resolve this controversy, high dimensional transformations of a computerized brain template were used to compare hippocampal volumes

Receptor autoradiography was used to localize and quantify the distribution of benzodiazepine receptor sites in human post mortem materials using [3H]flunitrazepam. The distribution and density of these sites was analysed in the brains of 21 patients dying without reported neurological disease. The distribution of benzodiazepine receptors in the human brain was found to be comparable from case to case although differences in the density occurred among the brains examined. No influence of the post mortem delay, age, gender or pre mortem drug treatment on the distribution and densities was obser

Spatial-attentional deficits are highly prevalent following stroke. They can be clinically detected by means of conventional bedside tests such as target cancellation, line bisection and the visual extinction test. Until recently, lesion mapping studies and functional imaging of the intact brain did not agree very well on exactly which parietal areas play a key role in selective attention: the inferior parietal lobule or the intraparietal sulcus. Recently, the use of a contrastive approach in patients akin to that commonly used in functional imaging studies in healthy volunteers together with

BACKGROUND: The mechanistic relationship between respiratory disorders and brain function remains poorly understood, despite growing evidence of cognitive and neurological manifestations in respiratory diseases. We aim to identify whether specific brain network connectivity patterns causally influence respiratory disease susceptibility, while respiratory conditions might reciprocally affect brain network architecture.
METHODS: We performed bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses using genome-wide association studies (GWAS) of brain network connectivity from UK Biobank resting-stat

OBJECTIVE: Impairment of consciousness is frequent in patients with supratentorial brain injury, but underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. Large-scale network dysfunction has been suggested as a unifying concept for the diverse focal infra- and supratentorial brain lesions associated with unconsciousness. Functional imaging studies have revealed that lesions in different locations that cause the same symptom can be linked to common networks using lesion network mapping (LNM).
METHODS: To identify a commonly injured network for impaired consciousness, LNM was used in a prospective, bi-c

Music is a universal human attribute. The study of amusia, a neurologic music processing deficit, has increasingly elaborated our view on the neural organization of the musical brain. However, lesions causing amusia occur in multiple brain locations and often also cause aphasia, leaving the distinct neural networks for amusia unclear. Here, we utilized lesion network mapping to identify these networks. A systematic literature search was carried out to identify all published case reports of lesion-induced amusia. The reproducibility and specificity of the identified amusia network were then tes

This article is an outline of the transition in "brain maps" used to illustrate locations of cortical "centers" associated with movements, sensations, and language beginning with images from Gall and Spurzheim in the nineteenth century through those of functional magnetic resonance imaging in the twenty-first century. During the intervening years, new approaches required new brain maps to illustrate them, and brain maps helped to objectify and naturalize mental processes. One approach, electrical stimulation of the cerebral cortex-exemplified by Fritsch and Hitzig in 1870, Ferrier in 1873, and
