[Endemic disease and clinical manifestations of onchocerciasis in the province of Rutana (Burundi)].

In 9 'collines' (administrative units) of the province of Rutana (Burundi) a sample of the population was examined to determine the prevalence and intensity of onchocerciasis in this endemic region. In all, the area is hypoendemic with 7.9% of the population infected. This means that, in a population of 52,000, about 4000 persons are parasitised. The intensity of onchocerciasis is low, in general. Clinical examination in a subsample of 4 collines showed that the number of people with onchocerciasis who complain about pruritus or who have skin lesions is limited (respectively 54.4% and 38.1%).

[Endemicity and clinical manifestations of onchocerciasis in the provinces of Cibitoke and Bubanza (Burundi)].

The prevalence and intensity of onchocerciasis in the endemic region of the provinces of Cibitoke and Bubanza (Burundi) have been determined through the examination of a sample of the population of 33 "collines" (administrative units). On average, 15.8% of the population was positive, which means that in a population at risk of 330,000, about 52,000 people are infected. The area is hypoendemic, but some mesoendemic pockets exist along the middle portion of the Ruhwa, Muhira and Kaburantwa rivers. The clinical examination of a subsample showed that respectively 69.1% and 48.6% of infected perso

An assessment of host resistance to ticks on cross-bred cattle in Burundi.

Groups of cattle of four different cross-breeds (Ankole x Friesian, Ankole x Brown-Swiss, Ankole x Guernsey, Ankole x Sahiwal) plus a group of pure Ankole cattle were immunized against tick-borne diseases: East Coast Fever, using a Theileria parva trivalent vaccine, and anaplasmosis, babesiosis and, subsequently, heartwater. With the exception of two small subgroups of Ankole and Ankole x Sahiwal which were treated by weekly spraying using Delnav, all the groups were exposed to natural field challenge of ticks to quantify the development of host resistance to ticks. The results indicate resist

The morbidity of schistosomiasis mansoni in the highland focus of Lake Cohoha, Burundi.

Morbidity due to infection with Schistosoma mansoni was investigated in a recently discovered highland focus around Lake Cohoha, Burundi. The distribution of the infection was very focal and morbidity patterns in populations from an endemic area A (prevalence 38%, mean egg load of positive subjects 231 eggs per gram [epg]), a less affected area B (16%, 90 epg) and a virtually non-endemic area C (5%, 45 epg), were compared; apart from schistosomiasis, the profiles of these populations were highly similar. The overall frequencies of diarrhoea were 36%, 25%, and 19%, respectively; of abdominal pa

[Principle aspects of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) in adults in Burundi].

The authors describe their experience of the infection by the virus of the human immunodeficiency HIV-1 in Burundi. The acquired immunodeficiency syndrome was brought to light in 1983 by the emergence of cryptococcal meningitis, Kaposi's sarcomas, disseminated candidiasis. 109 cases of infection by the virus of the human immunodeficiency (HIV) AIDS related complex, or acquired immunodeficiency syndromes, were observed in 8 months and are related in this paper. The authors elucidate the spread and amplify the role played by lorry drivers. The frequency of recent case history: tuberculosis, zona

Disentangling Temporal Trends of Clade Ib Monkeypox Virus Transmission in Burundi.

Utilizing mpox case data from Burundi between August 2024 and April 2025, we calibrated a mathematical model to quantify the temporal trends of clade Ib monkeypox virus transmission. The model outputs indicated a declining overall transmission trend. Children aged 0-4 and 5-9 years were estimated to be at higher risk of infection compared to older age groups, while sexual contact was inferred to contribute up to 50% of the overall transmission.

When uncommon uncovers: mucosal tuberculosis in a medical tourist from Burundi.

Tuberculosis confined to the mucus membranes is a rare presentation in the era of effective chemotherapy. We describe a case of mucosal tuberculosis in a "medical tourist" from Burundi that went undiagnosed for 6 years. Starting as conjunctivitis, the disease has spread to involve the nose and larynx as well. The clinical, pathophysiological, and epidemiological aspects are discussed.

Border Region Surveillance of Malaria Drug Resistance, Northern Burundi, 2023-2024.

To evaluated artemisinin partial resistance (ART-R) in malaria in Burundi, during December 2023-June 2024, we studied 423 children <5 years of age with uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum malaria in 8 health facilities in the northern part of the country. After artemether/lumefantrine treatment with only the first dose directly observed, 4.5% remained parasitemic on day 3. No pfkelch13 mutations, validated or candidate markers of ART-R, were detected. However, markers of antifolate and 4-aminoquinoline resistance were widespread: the dhfr triple mutant N51I/C59R/S108N was nearly fixed (92%), d

Epidemiology of Pediatric Surgical Conditions Observed in a First-Level Hospital in Burundi.

Background: Little is known about the surgical conditions affecting the pediatric population in low-income countries. In this article we describe the epidemiology of pediatric surgical diseases observed in Mutoyi hospital, a first-level hospital in Burundi. Methods and Findings: We retrospectively reviewed the records of all children (0-14 years) admitted to the Surgery ward from January 2017 to December 2017. We also reviewed the records of all the patients admitted to the Neonatology ward in 2017 and among them we selected the ones in which a surgical diagnosis was present. Five hundred twen

Association of environmental risk factors and trachoma in Gashoho Health District, Burundi.

BACKGROUND: Burundi is currently not meeting targets for elimination of trachoma and trichiasis by 2020 (GET2020). The recommended SAFE strategy (Surgery, antibiotics, face washing and environmental improvement) is currently not fully implemented in many areas of Burundi. The existence of associations between face-washing, sanitation and trachoma prevalence remain undocumented. METHODS: A convenience sample of 468 individuals from 117 households was drawn from attendees at trachoma clinics set up in four villages. Trachoma status, sex and age were recorded for all household members. Adult hou

Epidemic Shigella dysenteriae type 1 in Burundi: panresistance and implications for prevention.

An epidemic of Shigella dysenteriae type 1 infections has affected Africa since 1979. Reported dysentery cases increase sharply in Burundi during September through December. Of stool samples from 189 patients reporting bloody diarrhea in November 1990, a pathogen was identified in 123 (65%). The pathogen was S. dysenteriae type 1 in 82 (67%). All S. dysenteriae type 1 isolates were resistant to ampicillin, chloramphenicol, nalidixic acid, streptomycin, sulfisoxazole, tetracycline, and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. Thirty-two specimens (26%) yielded other Shigella species. Patients with S. dys

Rapid, early and specific diagnosis of tuberculosis and other mycobacterial diseases in Burundi.

The potential usefulness of ELISA based serological tests to assist in rapid, early and specific diagnosis of tuberculosis was investigated. The materials were selected, based on published data and on our preliminary findings. Initially screening tests were performed using crude antigens such as Purified Protein Derivate (PPD) and a BCG-filtrate. Unfortunately, the results with these antigens were not promising. The specificity of both antigens using sera from 94 healthy controls was 64%. As a consequence of these findings, the crude antigens were excluded from further tests, and the study was

[Human arbovirus infections in Burundi: results of a seroepidemiologic survey, 1980-1982].

A serological survey on 623 human sera was conducted in Burundi in 1980-1982, in order to evaluate the frequency of arboviral antibodies in the inhabitants of the three main areas: lowlands, central plateau and mountainous ridge. The results show a rather high activity of arboviruses, mainly in the lowlands (34.2% of inhabitants with antibodies). Chikungunya virus seems to be the most active arbovirus; the activity of Flavivirus is moderate; no trace of activity of yellow fever or West Nile viruses was found; Bunyavirus antibodies (particularly against Ilesha virus) were also detected.

Delivering orthopaedics in Burundi: a model for humanitarian surgery in resource-limited settings.

Burundi remains one of the most socioeconomically challenged countries globally, facing profound limitations in healthcare infrastructure, workforce, and access. In this context, the Italian Medical Foundation for Central Africa (FIMAC) has conducted humanitarian orthopaedic missions for over two decades in Bubanza, addressing critical musculoskeletal conditions in both paediatric and adult populations. This essay provides a comprehensive overview of the operational, clinical, and ethical dimensions of these missions. Commonly treated pathologies include chronic osteomyelitis, neglected fractu
