Ascites increases the resting energy expenditure in liver cirrhosis.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of ascites on the energy metabolism of patients with liver cirrhosis. The resting energy expenditure was determined in 10 patients with liver cirrhosis and ascites of moderate or large volume. The resting energy expenditure measurement was performed using indirect calorimetry and the resting energy expenditure predictive value was calculated with the Harris-Benedict equation, both before and after removal of ascitic fluid by paracentesis. Metabolic stress factors were absent in all cases. After an interval of 11.2 +/- 7.7 days between mea

Measuring energy expenditure in narcolepsy using doubly labeled water and respiration chamber calorimetry.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Hypocretin deficiency causes type 1 narcolepsy, a condition characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness, cataplexy, and fragmented nocturnal sleep. Two-thirds of people with narcolepsy are also overweight, of which half are obese. The pathophysiology behind weight gain in people with narcolepsy remains unknown. We assessed a possible decrease in energy expenditure as a cause for overweight in narcolepsy using respiration chamber calorimetry and doubly labeled water. METHODS: Ten males with type I narcolepsy and nine matched (for age, sex, and BMI) healthy controls were enr

Can we assess exercise metabolism from skin? Metabolomic profiles in skin dialysate collected during exercise.

Monitoring exercise intensity is essential for optimizing the health benefits of physical activity. Indirect calorimetry is the gold-standard method for assessing metabolic stress during exercise, though its reliance on extensive equipment for sampling and analyzing exhaled gases restricts its widespread application. Skin interstitial fluid may represent an ideal biofluid for the continuous monitoring of whole body metabolism and exercise intensity. However, specific metabolites in skin interstitial fluid that are more closely associated with metabolic variables measured by indirect calorimetr

Are prediction equations reliable for estimating resting energy expenditure in chronic kidney disease patients?

BACKGROUND: The determination of resting energy expenditure (REE) is the primary step for estimating the energy requirement of an individual. Although numerous equations have been formulated for predicting metabolic rates, there is a lack of studies addressing the reliability of those equations in chronic kidney disease (CKD). Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate whether the main equations developed for estimating REE can be reliably applied for CKD patients. METHODS: A total of 281 CKD patients (124 non-dialysis, 99 haemodialysis and 58 peritoneal dialysis) and 81 healthy control indi

Efficacy of providing energy expenditure information to guide weight loss interventions in people with obesity: A randomized controlled trial.

Resting energy expenditure (REE) and metabolic fuel utilization (carbohydrate or fat) proxied by respiratory quotient (RQ) from indirect calorimetry enables more precise measurement of energy needs and fat oxidation capacity. The study compared the effectiveness of providing energy expenditure information during diet and exercise weight intervention versus standard of care (SOC) on weight loss outcomes. Fifty-two participants with obesity were recruited from a specialist weight loss service, randomized 1:1 to intervention (INT) or SOC only. Participants in INT received four-weekly dietetic cou

Resting energy expenditure in children and adolescents with cerebral palsy: accuracy of available prediction formulas and development of population-specific methods.

INTRODUCTION: Energy requirements are difficult to estimate in children with cerebral palsy (CP). Resting energy expenditure (REE), necessary to implement personalized nutritional interventions, is most commonly estimated using prediction formulae since indirect calorimetry, the reference method, is not available in all nutrition units. The aims of the present study were: (1) to evaluate the accuracy of the most commonly used REE prediction formulae developed for healthy children, in children with CP; (2) to assess the accuracy of the REE population-specific formula for CP children proposed in

[Research progress on indirect energy measurement in guiding energy and nutritional application in nutritional support therapy for critically ill patients].

Nutritional support therapy is one of the extremely important treatment methods for patients in the intensive care unit. Timely and effective nutritional support regimens can improve patients' immune function, reduce complications, and optimize clinical outcomes. Energy expenditure is influenced by multiple factors, including patients' baseline characteristics (such as physical condition, gender, age) and dynamic changes in indicators (such as body temperature, nutritional support regimens, and therapeutic interventions). The currently recognized "gold standard" for accurately assessing energy

[Design and Verification of a Human Energy Metabolism Detection System Based on Breath-by-Breath Method].

OBJECTIVE: To accurately measure human energy metabolism with high temporal resolution, a respiratory gas analysis system was designed using a breath-by-breath approach. METHODS: Firstly, indirect calorimetry was employed in respiratory gas analysis to measure the respiratory flow and concentration signals in real-time. Secondly, oxygen consumption QO2 and carbon dioxide production QCO2 were calculated through respiratory characteristic alignment and respiratory signal segmentation. Finally, metabolic indexes were calculated according to the Weir formula. Furthermore, a controlled trial was f

Graduate Student Literature Review: The development of the Brouwer equation to estimate heat production-Past, present, and future perspectives.

Most studies employ indirect calorimetry to study ruminant energetics and indirectly measure heat production (HP) using an equation published by Ede Brouwer in 1965. Initially estimates of HP used measured oxygen (O2) consumption and carbon dioxide (CO2) production, and this was based on the relationship developed by Antoine Lavoisier between the 2 respiratory gases and metabolic HP. These gases were subsequently integrated into the first indirect calorimetry equation by Nathan Zuntz in the late 1800s. However, based on incomplete oxidation of methane (CH4) and HP associated with urinary N (UN

Prognostic significance of nonprotein respiratory quotient in patients with liver cirrhosis.

The aim of this study was to examine the effect of nonprotein respiratory quotient (npRQ), as assessed using indirect calorimetry, on clinical outcomes in patients with liver cirrhosis (LC). A total of 244 LC patients were evaluated in this study. For the univariate analysis, for each continuous variable, the optimal cutoff value that maximized the sum of sensitivity and specificity was selected using receiver operating curve (ROC) analysis for survival. There were 137 men and 107 women with the median (range) age of 67 (25-90) years. Indirect calorimetry indicated that 54 patients (22.1%) had

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) remain the leading cause of mortality worldwide, with Iran experiencing a notably high burden. Emerging evidence suggests that metabolic factors might be associated with cardiovascular conditions. Indirect calorimetry, is a noninvasive method for assessing energy metabolism, and may offer useful insights into cardiovascular risk stratification. This study aimed to explore the potential relationship between indirect calorimetry parameters and cardiovascular events in Phase 2 of the MASHAD Cohort Study. Predictive Equations Are Inaccurate in the Estimation of the Resting Energy Expenditure of Children With End-Stage Liver Disease.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Malnutrition is common in children with end-stage liver disease (ESLD) and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. The inability to accurately estimate energy needs of these patients may contribute to their poor nutrition status. In clinical practice, predictive equations are used to calculate resting energy expenditure (cREE). The objective of this study is to assess the accuracy of commonly used equations in pediatric patients with ESLD. METHODS: Retrospective study performed at the Hospital for Sick Children. Clinical, laboratory, and indirect calor

The venous-arterial CO2 to arterial-venous O2 content difference ratio: Easy to monitor?

Blood sampling for venous-arterial CO2 to arterial-venous O2 content difference ratio starts to be widely used as a hemodynamic monitoring tool, despite that this calculation remains cumbersome. We propose using indirect calorimetry and respiratory quotient for this purpose, with the same physiological concept.

Amputation: energy cost of ambulation.

A mobile instrument system was used to measure energy consumption by indirect calorimetry at rest and during ambulation in 25 unimpaired subjects, 6 unilateral below-knee (BK) amputee patients, 6 unilateral above-knee (AK) amputee patients and 4 bilateral AK amputee patients. To prevent the introduction of gait difficulties among the impaired subjects, each subject was permitted to walk at his own comfortable speed. Since speed thus varied among subjects, ambulation data were expressed in units of energy per foot traveled. Statistical analyses of the mean oxygen costs indicated several signifi

Youth Metabolic Equivalents Differ Depending on Operational Definitions.

UNLABELLED: Youth metabolic equivalents (METy) are sometimes operationally defined as multiples of predicted basal metabolic rate (METyBMR) and other times as multiples of measured resting metabolic rate (METyRMR). PURPOSE: This study aimed to examine the comparability of METyBMR and METyRMR. METHODS: Indirect calorimetry data (Cosmed K4b) were analyzed from two studies, with a total sample of 245 youth (125 male participants, 6-18 yr old, 37.4% overweight or obese). The Schofield equations were used to predict BMR, and K4b data from 30 min of supine rest were used to assess RMR. Participant

Energy expenditure of rhesus monkeys subjected to 11 years of dietary restriction.

Dietary restriction (DR) is currently the only paradigm that has consistently extended maximal life span and reduced the onset of age-related chronic diseases in all of the nonprimate species tested. Although it is controversial, some investigators have suggested that the underlying mechanisms may be mediated by adaptations in energy expenditure. We evaluated the extent to which DR alters energy metabolism in a unique cohort of rhesus monkeys submitted to DR for 11 yr. Total energy expenditure (doubly labeled water), resting energy expenditure (REE; indirect calorimetry), and nonbasal energy e
