Cellulitis and septic arthritis caused by Campylobacter fetus and Campylobacter jejuni: report of 2 cases and review of the literature.

Bacteremia caused by gram-negative bacteria occasionally causes soft tissue infections, including cellulitis and septic arthritis. We describe 1 patient each with Campylobacter fetus cellulitis and septic arthritis and review the world literature with regard to C. fetus and C. jejuni infections at these sites. Altogether, 14 patients with cellulitis (12 due to C. fetus and 2 due to C. jejuni) and 20 patients with septic arthritis (15 due to C. fetus and 4 caused by C. jejuni) have been described. Most infections, particularly those causing cellulitis, are found in elderly men with underlying s

[Bloodstream infection due to Campylobacter fetus subspecies fetus and skin involvement: A case series of three patients].

INTRODUCTION: Among the species of Campylobacter, C. fetus subspecies fetus is characterized by extra-intestinal manifestations, including bloodstream and cardiovascular infections, occurring preferentially in the context of immunosuppression. The cutaneous lesions are rarely described but may be underestimated. CASE REPORTS: We report on 3 cases of cellulitis with bloodstream infection due to Campylobacter fetus subspecies fetus, without cardiovascular infection in a 72- and 85-year-old women, respectively, and a 79-year-old man. Outcome was successful in all 3 cases after prolonged amoxicil

Molecular epidemiology of Campylobacter fetus subsp. fetus on bovine artificial insemination stations using pulsed field gel electrophoresis.

The presence of Campylobacter fetus subspecies fetus (Cff) on bovine artificial insemination (AI)-stations can have major economical consequences. More knowledge on the epidemiology of C. fetus is needed to control Cff infections at AI-stations. We assessed the epidemiology of Cff on AI-stations and the molecular relationship between Cff strains isolated from outbreaks on AI-stations. Thirteen Cff strains (two Cff strains per outbreak and one sporadic case) isolated from bulls housed on different AI-stations were selected and compared with ten unrelated bovine and ovine Cff isolates from diffe

Chronic atrophic gastritis in SCID mice experimentally infected with Campylobacter fetus.

Campylobacter fetus is a cause of enteritis and invasive extraintestinal disease in humans. In order to develop an animal model of C. fetus infection, outbred ICR SCID mice were orally challenged with a clinical isolate of C. fetus. The stomachs of SCID mice were heavily colonized with C. fetus, and colonization was associated with the development of chronic atrophic gastritis. This lesion was characterized by an inflammatory infiltrate of granulocytes and macrophages that over time resulted in a loss of specialized parietal and chief cells in the corpus and the appearance of a metaplastic muc

Campylobacter fetus ss. jejuni: a cause of massive lower gastrointestinal hemorrhage.

A patient is described with Campylobacter enteritis complicated by massive lower gastrointestinal bleeding from multiple mucosal ulcers in the terminal ileum and at the ileocecal valve. Repeated stool cultures and antibiotic therapy may be indicated in certain patients to diminish the morbidity arising from what may seem to be mild disease. In patients who suffer bleeding complications, arteriography before surgery is necessary to demonstrate an otherwise grossly indefinable source of bleeding.

Campylobacter fetus Peritonitis in a Patient Undergoing Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis.

Peritonitis is one of the most serious complications of peritoneal dialysis (PD). The most common microbial causes of PD-associated peritonitis are Gram-positive pathogens. However, unusual microorganisms may be involved in this type of infection, such as Campylobacter fetus. Here, we report a case of C. fetus peritonitis in a 60-year-old woman undergoing continuous ambulatory PD. This patient was admitted to the nephrology department with a history of fatigue, abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting, and fever. A bacteriological examination of the PD effluent revealed a cloudy liquid containing 90

Campylobacter fetus Invasive Infections and Risks for Death, France, 2000-2021.

Campylobacter fetus accounts for 1% of Campylobacter spp. infections, but prevalence of bacteremia and risk for death are high. To determine clinical features of C. fetus infections and risks for death, we conducted a retrospective observational study of all adult inpatients with a confirmed C. fetus infection in Nord Franche-Comté Hospital, Trevenans, France, during January 2000-December 2021. Among 991 patients with isolated Campylobacter spp. strains, we identified 39 (4%) with culture-positive C. fetus infections, of which 33 had complete records and underwent further analysis; 21 had docu

Campylobacter fetus spondylodiscitis in a patient with HIV infection and restored CD4 count.

Campylobacter fetus (C. fetus) is a rare condition and mostly seen in elderly or immunocompromised patients. We present the first case of C. fetus spondylodiscitis in a virologically suppressed HIV seropositive patient with low back pain. MRI was performed and showed spondylodiscitis of the L4-L5 region. Empirical antibiotic therapy with flucloxacillin was started after blood cultures were drawn and an image-guided disc biopsy was performed. Blood cultures remained negative. The anaerobic culture of the puncture biopsy of the disc revealed presence of C. fetus after which the antibiotic treatm

Contained rupture of a mycotic infrarenal aortic aneurysm infected with Campylobacter fetus.

Mycotic abdominal aortic aneurysms (MAAAs) are rare entities accounting for 0.65-2% of aortic aneurysms. Campylobacter fetus has a tropism for vascular tissue and is a rare cause of mycotic aneurysm. We present a 73-year-old male patient with contained rupture of a MAAA caused by C. fetus, successfully treated with endovascular aortic repair (EVAR) and antibiotics, which is not previously described for this aetiology. Although open surgery is the gold standard, EVAR is nowadays feasible and potentially represents a durable option, especially in frail patients.

Campylobacter fetus bacteremia with purulent pleurisy in a young adult with primary hypogammaglobulinemia.

A 24-year-old man presented with fever and pleural effusion predominantly containing lymphocytes. Cultures of the pleural effusion and blood revealed Campylobacter fetus, and laboratory studies showed a low serum level of immunoglobulin. The patient was diagnosed with C. fetus pleuritis, bacteremia and primary hypogammaglobulinemia, and subsequent treatment with meropenem and immunoglobulin improved his condition. Although the underlying cause of the primary hypogammaglobulinemia remains unclear, the patient's status improved under immunoglobulin replacement therapy. C. fetus pleuritis is a ra

Cardiovascular and bacteremic manifestations of Campylobacter fetus infection: case report and review.

A case of bacteremia due to Campylobacter fetus subspecies fetus with concomitant pleuropericarditis in a previously healthy patient is presented. The organism is ubiquitous, but most commonly causes infection in patients with chronic underlying illnesses. The pathogenesis of human infection has not been definitively elucidated. Bacteremia is the most common clinical manifestation of this infection, although cases of thrombophlebitis, mycotic aneurysm, endocarditis, and pericarditis have also been reported. The treatment of choice for most infections is gentamicin, with chloramphenicol recomme

Rupture of Non-aneurysmal Mycotic Thoracic Aortic Arteritis Caused by Campylobacter fetus.

Campylobacter fetus (C. fetus) demonstrates a preference for vascular tissue and is an infrequent etiology of mycotic aortic arteritis (MAA), mostly occurring in the abdominal aorta. MAA characteristically has a rapid progression to aneurysm formation and subsequently, to aortic rupture. We present a 73-year-old woman with non-aneurysmal mycotic thoracic aortic arteritis (MTAA) complicated with a rupture caused by C. fetus. She presented after four days of pain in the lower abdomen. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography revealed non-aneurysmal descending thoracic aorta arteritis and an abdomin

Occurrence and molecular characterization of reptilian Campylobacter fetus strains isolated in Taiwan.

The number of people who raise reptiles as pets has increased, but information about zoonotic Campylobacter carried by reptiles is limited. A survey of zoonotic Campylobacter species isolated from reptiles was undertaken to understand the possibility of this zoonotic bacterial pathogen causing human infection. A total of 179 fresh reptile fecal samples were collected from human-raised, pet shop and wild reptiles to survey the Campylobacter species. Basic biochemical reactions and 16S rRNA gene sequencing were used to identify the Campylobacter species. In the 179 fecal samples, 6.7% (12/179) w

Campylobacter fetus cellulitis in an immunocompromised patient: case report and review of the literature.

Campylobacter fetus is an opportunist Gram-negative bacillus. The most frequent clinical manifestation is bacteriemia but it can also be responsable for soft tissue infections, endovascular infections, meningitis, peritonitis and thrombophlebitis. Campylobacter fetus cellulitis has been described, but rarely identified in subcutaneous puncture samples. We report a case of an immunocompromised patient with Campylobacter fetus bacteriemia associated with a soft tissue infection whose subcutaneous puncture also revealed the bacteria.

The Campylobacter fetus S layer provides resistance to photoactivated zinc oxide nanoparticles.

The antimicrobial activity of metal-based compounds, including metal oxides, has resulted in numerous agricultural, industrial, and medical applications. Zinc oxide nanoparticles are toxic to Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria as well as to some fungi. In this study we assess the sensitivity of Campylobacter fetus, a Gram-negative bacterial pathogen of humans and animals, to ZnO nanoparticles and determine whether the S layer protects C. fetus from the antibacterial action of these nanoparticles. Broth and agar dilution assays revealed that ZnO nanoparticles at 100 μg/mL were bacteriocid
