BACKGROUND: Cutaneous congenital candidiasis (CCC) is a rare condition consisting of invasive fungal infection of the epidermis and dermis that mostly affects preterm infants. Maternal vaginal candidiasis is present in half of the cases, although the occurrence of invasive candidiasis during pregnancy or peripartum period is exceptional.
CASE REPORT: We present the case of a full-term infant that was born by vacuum-assisted vaginal delivery to an apparently healthy 33 year-old woman with no history of intravenous drug use or vaginal candidiasis during pregnancy. The newborn showed a diffuse m

BACKGROUND: Candidemia, associated with high morbidity and mortality, remains challenging to diagnose due to the limitations of blood cultures. Serological biomarkers offer faster detection, enabling earlier treatment and improving outcomes.
METHODS: This study, conducted at CHU UCL Namur (August 2023-January 2025), evaluated three diagnostic biomarkers for candidemia: CAGTA IgG VirClia Monotest, Wako β-D-glucan test, and CandId OLM RT-PCR. A total of 35 candidemia cases and 20 controls were included.
RESULTS: CAGTA IgG VirClia Monotest demonstrated low sensitivity (46%) and moderate specifi

Candidemia is a significant cause of mortality among hospitalized patients, both worldwide and in Brazil. Prompt and appropriate treatment are essential to mitigate mortality, and clinical practice guidelines aim to optimize patient care based on the best scientific evidence. This study aims to examine the management of candidemia, assessing adherence to the guidelines of the Brazilian Society of Infectious Diseases in a single center located at São Paulo, Brazil. All adult patients hospitalized from 2016 to 2018 who presented one positive blood culture for Candida spp. were included. Electron

BACKGROUND: The Infectious Diseases Society of America recommends a screening dilated retinal examination by an ophthalmologist for all patients with candidemia. Conversely, the American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends against routine screening in patients with candidemia without symptoms.
METHODS: In a collaborative effort between infectious diseases and ophthalmology, we examined the incidence of ocular complications in 308 patients with candidemia and subsequently measured the rate of fundoscopic examinations, risk factors for ocular complications, management changes, and outcomes.

PURPOSE: Current guidelines recommend complete extraction of cardiovascular implantable electronic devices (CIEDs) in the case of persistent or recurrent fungemia without other identifiable sources, though supporting evidence is lacking. We sought to evaluate the prognosis of patients with candidemia and CIEDs.
METHODS: Twelve consecutive patients (54 ± 12 years, 8 male) with CIED and concurrent candidemia were reviewed.
RESULTS: At the time of diagnosis with candidemia, seven patients were immunocompromised, six were on long-term antibacterial therapy, two were intravenous drug users, four

OBJECTIVES: Candidemia is among the most frequent nosocomial bloodstream infections. Landmark case-control studies on amphotericin B and fluconazole estimated attributable mortality rates of 38% and 49%, respectively. After introduction of echinocandins, these may have decreased.
METHODS: In a case-control design, 100 consecutive, hospitalised patients with candidemia were enrolled at the University Hospital of Cologne, Germany between 2014 and 2017. Controls were patients without candidemia matched for age, sex, year and duration of hospitalisation, main admission diagnosis and Patient Clini

We aimed to analyze whether the lack of inclusion of specific recommendations for the management of candidemia is an independent risk factor for early and overall mortality. Multicenter study of adult patients with candidemia in 13 hospitals. We assessed the proportion of patients on whom nine specific ESCMID and IDSA guidelines recommendations had been applied, and analyzed its impact on mortality. 455 episodes of candidemia were documented. Patients who died within the first 48 hours were excluded. Sixty-two percent of patients received an appropriate antifungal treatment. Either echinocandi

Candidemia is the fourth most frequent health care-associated bloodstream infection, and the most frequent severe fungal infection developing in critically ill patients in intensive care units (ICUs). Diagnosis of candidemia in ICU patients is a complex task made of both early and late assessments involving both conventional diagnostic methods and novel rapid tests. Management strategies to optimize treatment of candidemia can be challenging and include starting early adequate therapy, use of an adequate dose and duration of therapy, de-escalating treatment whenever possible, and early discont

BACKGROUND: In recent decades, there has been an increase in the survival of recipients of solid organ transplants related to the improvement of the surgical technique, the introduction of protocols for immunosuppressive therapy, and the use of antimicrobial prophylaxis. Nonetheless, invasive fungal infection (IFI) is currently the major cause of morbidity and mortality in this group of patients. Invasive candidiasis is the most common IFI found after renal transplantation and is usually associated with total parenteral nutrition, broad-spectrum antibiotic therapy and abdominal surgery.

BACKGROUND: Candida spp. are increasingly important hospital-acquired pathogens in neonatal intensive care units (NICU) and cause considerable mortality in preterm infants. Most studies have been limited to a single institution. The aim of this study was to determine the epidemiology of candidemia in all Barcelona NICUs.
METHODS: We conducted prospective population-based surveillance for candidemia in Barcelona, Spain, during 2002-2003. This report focuses on the results from 5 participating hospitals with NICUs.
RESULTS: We detected 24 cases, resulting in an annual incidence of 32.6 cases p

The growing threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global concern. With AMR directly causing 1.27 million deaths in 2019 and projections of up to 10 million annual deaths by 2050, optimising infectious disease treatments is imperative. Prudent antimicrobial use, including treatment duration, can mitigate AMR emergence. This is particularly critical in candidemia, a severe condition with a 45% crude mortality rate, as the 14-day minimum treatment period has not been challenged in randomised comparison. A comprehensive literature search was conducted in August 2023, revealing seven origin

Candidemia and invasive candidiasis are the most common healthcare-associated invasive fungal infections, with a crude mortality rate of 25-50%. Candida albicans remains the most frequent etiology, followed by C. glabrata, C. parapsilosis and C. tropicalis. With the exception of a limited number of species (ie: C. krusei, C. glabrata and rare Candida species), resistance to fluconazole and other triazoles are quite uncommon. However, recently fluconazole-resistant C. parapsilosis, echinocandin-resistant C. glabrata and the multidrug resistant C. auris have emerged. Resistance to amphotericin B

Its role in the in the differential diagnosis between candidemia and bacteremia is unclear. The aim of this systematic review was to summarize the current evidence about PCT values for differentiating candidemia from bacteremia.
METHODS: PubMed and EMBASE were searched for studies reporting data on the diagnostic performance of serum PCT levels in intensive care unit (ICU) or non-ICU adult patients with candidemia, in comparison to patients with b
