Building Capacity to Address Women's Health Issues in the Mixtec and Zapotec Community.

INTRODUCTION: Mixtecs and Zapotecs are indigenous populations from Mexico. Many are unable to read and write, and speak only their native nonwritten languages, Mixteco and Zapoteco. About one-half of California's indigenous farm worker population is estimated to be Mixteco-speaking (82,000-125,000), and about 20,000 Mixtecs and a smaller number of Zapotecs live in Ventura County. OBJECTIVES: A community-academic partnership conducted mixed-methods research with the aims of 1) collecting preliminary data on women's health needs, 2) training promotoras to assist with this effort, and 3) engagin

The Conundrum of Training and Capacity Building for People with Learning Disabilities Doing Research.

BACKGROUND: This study explores the training involved when people with learning disabilities take their place in the community as researchers. This was a theme in a recent UK seminar series where a network of researchers explored pushing the boundaries of participatory research. METHOD: Academics, researchers with learning disabilities, supporters and other inclusive researchers considered important themes arising from presentations about developments in participatory research. The paper emerges from critical reflection on these rich discussions. RESULTS: A seminar series is a form of resear

Empowering Local Health Promoters: Capacity Building for Behaviour Change in Low-Resource Settings.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Behaviour change interventions (BCIs) are widely used to improve health outcomes, yet practitioners in the field often lack the training to design, implement and evaluate them effectively. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of a ten-module, theory- and evidence-based training programme on practitioners' knowledge, self-efficacy and intention to use BCIs, particularly in low-resource settings. METHODS: The training was delivered to Health Promotion Technicians (N = 40) in Paraguay (2022) and Bangladesh (2024). It covered key behavioural science concepts and prac

Building adaptive capacity of US Gulf Coast city practitioners to extreme weather events.

Building city practitioners' capacity to prepare for and respond to climate change-driven events can increase coastal cities' resilience. We conducted a first-of-its-kind mixed methods research project from 2021 to 2023 with 46 US Gulf Coast small and midsize cities to measure the effectiveness of an adaptive capacity-building intervention: a stormwater planning tool called FloodWise Communities (FWC) deployed through the engagement between researchers and practitioners in each city. City practitioners were surveyed preintervention and postintervention between September 2021 and December 2022.

Building leadership capacity through coaching: A pilot professional development initiative for nurse faculty.

Leadership development remains a critical need for emerging nurse leaders as academic and health care environments become increasingly complex and resource constrained. Nursing faculty are frequently expected to assume leadership roles with limited formal preparation or structured support. In response, a pilot coaching-based professional development program was designed and implemented with early-career nurse faculty in a single academic setting. The Advancing Collegiate Coaching for Excellence in Leadership (ACCEL) program combined individualized coaching with structured cohort-based learning

Optimizing Georgia's public health workforce: a study on demographics, engagement, and capacity building.

BACKGROUND: A well-functioning public health system relies on a robust workforce. Comprehensive data on the workforce, such as number, distribution, and key characteristics, are crucial for evidence-based workforce planning and development. However, few comprehensive public health workforce assessments exist, especially in low- and middle-income countries. Public health reforms over the years and needs identified during the COVID-19 pandemic prompted this assessment in Georgia. METHODS: A survey of the core public health workforce, including employees at central and regional units of the Nati

Addressing false information through local capacity building in community-based disaster risk management.

UNLABELLED: The increase in climate-related disasters makes it necessary to address the spread of false information for effective disaster management. While social media can speed up disaster information, false information causes anxiety, fear, and poor decision-making, which affect preparedness and resilience. This study describes how local capacity building can address false information in community-based disaster risk management. The research uses a qualitative approach with secondary data analysis and an integrative literature review. The findings of this study show that there is a need to

Autism research capacity building in Northern Mexico: Preliminary evaluation of an ongoing process.

To inform improvement of care and public policy, quality research is required. Conducting research projects requires skills and infrastructure. Research capacity building is the process by which individuals and organizations develop greater ability to conduct useful research. However, in the scientific community, research quality and productivity measures are often focused on long-term products, such as publications or grants awarded. Those measures are not helpful when measuring initial stages of research, a common situation in low- and middle-income countries. We used a six-principle framewo

China's approach to malaria control and elimination: Adaptive management and policy capacity building.

ABSTRACTMalaria remains a major global public health burden and is a potential priority for Chinese health cooperation. However, limited analysis exists on the reference value of China's malaria elimination experience for other countries. While existing studies have focused on specific control strategies used in China, few have examined how Chinese malaria policy and practice have been adapted over time in response to heterogeneity across a vast country. This paper draws on literature, policy reviews, and in-depth interviews with key informants, including government officials and experts invol
