A 45-year-old man died 2 months after being bitten on the hand by a dog. He developed the rare but characteristic clinical picture of fulminant septicaemia and peripheral gangrene caused by a Gram-negative bacillus, Capnocytophaga canimorsus, previously known as dysgonic fermenter type 2 (DF-2), which is an occasional commensal in the oral flora of dogs and cats. This disease must be anticipated and dog bites appropriately managed to avoid the mortality associated with infection by this micro-organism. Initial treatment includes appropriate prophylactic antibiotics and debridement, while early

Capnocytophaga sputigena is a gram-negative facultatively anaerobic, capnophilic bacterium typically residing in the human oropharyngeal flora. This opportunistic pathogen can cause a wide range of infections, from bacteremia to septic abortion. However, it is exceedingly rare for a patient to present with tonsillitis due to C. sputigena. Herein, we discuss the presentation, hospital course, and clinical trajectory of a patient experiencing complications of tonsillitis related to C. sputigena in the context of acute myeloid leukemia. Additionally, we delve into the treatment approaches and cha

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the role of oral microbiome in promoting oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) development.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We investigated the salivary microbiome of 108 controls and 70 OSCC cases by16S rRNA gene sequencing and detected the fluorescence signal of OSCC-related pathological bacteria by fluorescence in situ hybridization assay (FISH). The invasion and migration assays were used to show the differences of invasive and migrative abilities between control and experimental groups. Quantitative real-time PCR and Western blotting were used to verify the epithelial-to-

A hemoglobin-supplemented medium composed of Columbia agar base supplemented with 1% hemoglobin and 1% Polyvitex was used to investigate the in vitro activity of 29 antimicrobial agents against Capnocytophaga species. Clindamycin was the most active agent, with all strains being inhibited by 0.06 microgram/ml or less. Amoxicillin-clavulanic acid and imipenem were the most active among the beta-lactam antibiotics (MIC for 90% of strains tested [MIC90], 0.50 microgram/ml); other very active drugs were BMY 28142, cefpirome, cefotaxime, ceftazidime, and ceftriaxone (MIC90, 0.06 to 0.50 micrograms/

Capnocytophaga canimorsus infections, though rare, can be severe. Diagnosis is straightforward with a known dog-bite history, but is challenging otherwise. A 67-year-old woman with no immunodeficiency or alcohol abuse history presented with high fever (41.5°C), vomiting, and altered consciousness. No neck stiffness or peritoneal irritation was observed. Laboratory tests showed elevated liver enzymes, creatine kinase, inflammatory markers, and lactate. Computed tomography suggested strangulated ileus, which was ruled out during emergency laparotomy. Postoperatively, she experienced shock and wa

Capnocytophaga species have been shown to cause a wide range of severe infections that can progress to severe sepsis. They also present a diagnostic challenge due to multiple factors, including non-specific symptoms and difficulty in microbiological detection due to slow growth. Capnocytophaga infection has been shown to be a potential trigger for thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA) through complement activation and endothelial injury that can trigger microthrombi formation. This presentation can sometimes mimic primary thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP). Often, the combination of difficul

INTRODUCTION: Purpura fulminans is a rare but fatal manifestation of Capnocytophaga canimorsus bacteremia that can present in immunocompromised hosts. This can have a profound impact on patients, including recipients of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant. Despite aggressive therapy, mortality can be as high as 60% and most patients require amputation of multiple extremities.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present a 31-year-old woman s/p myeloablative allogeneic transplant, presenting with purpura fulminans and septic shock. She had been on Immunosuppressive therapy with rituximab and tacrol

BACKGROUND: Capnocytophaga canimorsus is a facultative anaerobic, slow-growing, capnophilic, Gram-negative bacillus, that is commonly found in the microflora of canine and feline oral cavities. Capnocytophaga infections are an emerging zoonotic disease that can cause fatal systemic infections in immunocompromised individuals. Localized ocular Capnocytophaga infections, including keratitis, blepharitis, and endophthalmitis, can lead to severe eye threatening situations. To our knowledge, there is currently no documented case of Capnocytophaga canimorsus blebitis with bleb perforation after trab

Capnocytophaga canimorsus, commonly transmitted by dog bites, can cause severe sepsis, and the mortality rate is very high. We experienced a case of hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) complicated by severe sepsis caused by C. canimorsus. A 58-year-old man with no remarkable medical history was admitted to another hospital with fever and mild consciousness disorder developed 3 days after being bitten by his dog. The next day, the patient developed disseminated intravascular coagulation and shock and was transferred to our emergency medical center. Blood tests showed hyperferritinemia and

We describe a case of a life-threatening septicemia resulting from a previous dog bite wound. The isolated bacterium was Capnocytophaga canimorsus, a slow-growing Gram-negative bacillus commonly found in dog saliva. Known risk factors for invasive C. canimorsus infections are alcohol abuse, cigarette smoking, splenectomy or other forms of immunosuppression. Any clinician seeing patients with a history of a dog bite should consider this pathogen as a causative agent and take detailed history regarding exposure to animals.

A 56-year-old man was bitten by a dog. 8 days later he was admitted to a hospital because of severe deterioration of his clinical situation. He developed the clinical picture of fulminant sepsis. In spite of aggressive intensive care therapy the patient died 24 hours later. Capnocytophaga canimorsus was identified from initial blood cultures. This gram-negative rod is part of the normal oral flora of dogs and cats. It can be spread to humans by bites, licking or scratches and causes severe infections, especially in persons with special risk factors (splenectomy, alcoholism). The mortality rate

Patients with intra-abdominal processes that require prompt surgical intervention, including appendicitis, perforated viscus, ischemic bowel, volvulus, and bowel obstruction, often present with signs and symptoms of an acute abdomen. Several medical problems can mimic an acute abdomen. Overwhelming postsplenectomy infection is a life-threatening condition that can present with acute abdominal symptoms. The incidence of overwhelming postsplenectomy infection ranges from 1% to 25%, and is caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae in 50% of cases. Capnocytophaga canimorsus, a bacteria commonly found in

Since 1961, 200 human isolates of Capnocytophaga canimorsus--a gram-negative bacterium--have been sent to CDC for identification. Infections with this organism may result in a spectrum of manifestations ranging from self-limiting cellulitis to fatal septicemia; most fatal infections have occurred in persons with a history of asplenia, alcoholism, or hematologic malignancy. In most (77%) cases, infection is preceded by a bite or other exposure to dogs. This report summarizes the investigation by the New Mexico Health and Environment departments and CDC of a fatal case of C. canimorsus infection

UNLABELLED: The human oral microbiome, a complex ecosystem of niche-specific communities influenced by local ecological factors, plays a critical role in health and disease. Capnocytophaga species are prevalent in the human mouth, often abundant in dental plaque and linked to both commensalism and pathogenicity, motivating a detailed study of their ecological and functional diversity. This study employs metapangenomics to reveal Capnocytophaga strain-level distributions and functional adaptations across distinct sites in the human oral cavity. Pangenomic, phylogenetic, and average nucleotide i

Capnocytophaga canimorsus is a slow-growing, Gram-negative bacterium commonly found as a part of the normal oral flora of dogs and cats, and it is associated with severe systemic infections following dog bites, especially in immunocompromised patients. Although spondylodiscitis due to Capnocytophaga species has been reported in the literature, cases involving previously operated spinal segments are extremely rare. A 52-year-old woman working as a dog trainer presented with fever, headache, photophobia, and lumbar back pain. Her medical history included an L5-S1 hemilaminectomy performed 9-year

A man in his 60s with advanced COPD and lung adenocarcinoma presented with sepsis and acute hypoxaemic respiratory failure. Imaging revealed bilateral pleural effusions, and he was found to have a polymicrobial empyema which included Capnocytophaga sputigena Despite appropriate treatment, he continued to deteriorate and ultimately died of sepsis. Capnocytophaga species, typically benign constituents of the oral microbiota, rarely can instigate pleuropulmonary infections, especially in immunocompromised individuals. We highlight the difficulty in the identification and the optimal antimicrobial
