Abnormal magnesium status in patients with cardiovascular diseases.

To investigate magnesium status in patients with cardiovascular diseases and in those presenting high factors for these diseases, we measured the concentrations of serum total Mg, serum ionized Mg and intra-erythrocyte Mg. Mg is an important cofactor for many enzymes, especially those involved in phosphate transfer reactions. Mg deficiency has been shown to be associated with fatal cardiovascular diseases, as well as with risk factors for these diseases. Only measurement of the serum concentration of total Mg is routinely available, but ionized Mg is the physiologically active component. Furth

Smoking-associated Electrocardiographic Abnormalities Predict Cardiovascular Mortality: Insights from NHANES.

BACKGROUND—: Smoking is associated with arrhythmia and sudden cardiac death, but the biological mechanisms remain unclear. Abnormal electrocardiogram (ECG) durations of ventricular repolarization (QT interval), atrial depolarization (P wave), and atrioventricular depolarization (PR interval and segment), predict cardiac arrhythmia and mortality. OBJECTIVES—: To elucidate how smoking affects cardiac excitation, we assessed in a nationally representative sample (NHANES III) associations between cotinine, abnormalities in P duration, PR interval, PR segment, rate-corrected QT (QTc), QRS duration

Oxidative Mechanisms and Cardiovascular Abnormalities of Cirrhosis and Portal Hypertension.

In patients with portal hypertension, there are many complications including cardiovascular abnormalities, hepatorenal syndrome, ascites, variceal bleeding, and hepatic encephalopathy. The underlying mechanisms are not yet completely clarified. It is well known that portal hypertension causes mesenteric congestion which produces reactive oxygen species (ROS). ROS has been associated with intestinal mucosal injury, increased intestinal permeability, enhanced gut bacterial overgrowth, and translocation; all these changes result in increased endotoxin and inflammation. Portal hypertension also re

Cardiovascular-specific PSEN1 deletion leads to abnormalities in calcium homeostasis.

Mutations of PSEN1 have been reported in dilated cardiomyopathy pedigrees. Understanding the effects and mechanisms of PSEN1 in cardiomyocytes might have important implications for treatment of heart diseases. Here, we showed that PSEN1 was downregulated in ischemia-induced failing hearts. Functionally, cardiovascular specific PSEN1 deletion led to spontaneous death of the mice due to cardiomyopathy. At the age of 11 months, the ratio of the heart weight/body weight was slightly lower in the Sm22a-PSEN1-KO mice compared with that of the WT mice. Echocardiography showed that the percentage of e

[Pulmonary vascular remodeling in congenital cardiovascular abnormalities: an eternal topic].

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is one of the most severe complications of congenital heart defects with left to right shunt. Pulmonary vascular remodeling (PVR) is extremely essential in PAH. Therefore, prevention and reversion of PVR is one of the most important factors for improving quality of life for children suffering from PAH. In this article we reviewed the emerging research views on PVR from the disciplines of oncology and anti-tumor pharmacy. Two main sections were included. On the one hand, we introduced the "ATM signal turning point hypothesis" from the DNA damage response (D

Electrocardiogram abnormalities and cardiovascular mortality in elderly patients with CKD.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Cardiovascular disease is the most common cause of death in CKD. This study evaluated whether electrocardiogram (ECG) abnormalities are predictors of cardiovascular death in CKD. DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS, & MEASUREMENTS: The Cardiovascular Health Study limited database (1989-2005) was used to identify a cohort with CKD at baseline (estimated GFR < 60 mL/min per 1.73 m(2)). The patients were categorized as having major, minor, or no ECG abnormalities. Rates of adjudicated cardiovascular events and mortality were compared among the groups using proportional hazar

[Metabolic abnormalities, lipodystrophy and cardiovascular risk in HIV-infected patients].

Life expectancy of HIV-infected patients has improved considerably with HAART. However long term use of HAART is linked with lipodystrophy syndrom (subcutaneous lipoatrophy and central fat accumulation) associated with dyslipemia (hypoHDL, hyperLDL and hypertriglyceridemia) and insulin resistance. It is also linked with mitochondrial toxicity clinically expressed by chronic fatigue syndrom and premature aging. The induced metabolic syndrom has cardiovascular consequences and myocardial infarction is the cause of 7% of the HIV-infected deaths in 2000. Assessment of these complications should be

Metabolic and cardiovascular abnormalities in patients with peripheral arterial disease.

Twenty-eight consecutive patients of an average age of 63 years with intermittent claudication secondary to underlying peripheral arterial disease were studied for evidence of metabolic or other cardiovascular abnormalities and the results obtained were compared with those of 28 matched control subjects free of vascular disease. Patients with peripheral arterial disease had significantly higher levels of systolic and diastolic blood pressure, a greater incidence of ECG abnormalities, lipoprotein abnormalities, elevated serum triglycerides, and serum copper. The incidence of smoking and abnorma

Sitosterolemia: Diagnosis, Metabolic and Hematological Abnormalities, Cardiovascular Disease and Management.

Sitosterolemia is a recessive inherited metabolic disorder of unknown prevalence, characterized by increased levels of plasma plant sterols. It is caused by 28 and 31 variants in ABCG5 and ABCG8 genes, respectively, and is characterized by a predisposition to hyperabsorption and accumulation of toxic levels of plant sterols in plasma. Its clinical picture is extremely heterogeneous. The main clinical features are tendinous and cutaneous xanthomas, arthritis or arthralgia, premature cardiovascular disease and atherosclerosis. These characteristics are shared with familial hypercholesterolemia (

Early Screening for Cardiovascular Abnormalities With Preparticipation Echocardiography: Feasibility Study.

OBJECTIVE: The traditional history and physical (H&P) is a poor screening modality to identify athletes at risk for sudden cardiac death. Although better than H&P alone, electrocardiograms (ECG) have also been found to have high false-positive rates. A limited portable echocardiogram by a frontline physician (PEFP) performed during preparticipation physical examination (PPE) allows for direct measurements of the heart to more accurately identify athletes with structural abnormalities. Therefore, it is worthwhile to assess the feasibility of incorporating limited PEFP as part of PPEs. The aim o

Cardiovascular biomarkers in vertically HIV-infected children without metabolic abnormalities.

Early cardiovascular disease is a major concern for ART-suppressed vertically HIV-infected children; however, evidence is lacking regarding specific preventive measures. In this study, a complete panel of biomarkers was determined together with carotid intima-media thickness (IMT), in a cohort of 64 HIV-infected children and 30 controls. Mean age of participants was 14.1±5 years. HIV-infected patients showed normal lipid profile, with only slightly higher triglycerides, and no differences between groups were found regarding IMT. HIV-infected patients displayed higher levels of soluble CD14 (sC
