Cranberry polyphenols: potential benefits for dental caries and periodontal disease.

Over the past decade, cranberries and their molecular components have received increasing attention from researchers in human health. In particular, the properties of the high-molecular-weight polyphenols isolated from cranberries have shown promise with regard to dental caries and periodontal disease. These potential anticaries agents inhibit the production of organic acids and the formation of biofilms by cariogenic bacteria. In addition, cranberry polyphenols may reduce the inflammatory response, as well as the production and activity of proteolytic enzymes contributing to the destruction o

The effect of fluorine and homeopathic medicines in rats fed cariogenic diet.

Although some sectors of dentistry have benefited from technological advances, dental caries is still a major problem. Prevention and treatment of dental caries by fluorine is considered a major advance in public health. Nevertheless fluorosis, caused by ingestion of excessive amounts of fluorine during the period of teeth formation, is of great concern. In accordance with the homeopathic doctrine, minimum doses of fluorine and other substances could prevent and/or treat caries. In this experiment, we compared the preventive action of fluorine and evaluated the effect of homeopathic medicines

Efficacy of Oxy-Ionic Solutions With Varying pH Levels Against Streptococcus mutans In Vitro.

Background Chlorhexidine (CHX) is a widely used antimicrobial agent known for its ability to inhibit cariogenic bacteria, reduce plaque formation, neutralize acidity, and promote remineralization. However, the effectiveness of oxy-ionic solutions at different pH levels as an alternative antimicrobial treatment requires further exploration. This study aims to compare the antimicrobial effects of oxy-ionic solutions at various pH levels with those of CHX and fluoride. Methodology This study employed disc diffusion tests to measure the inhibition zone diameters of each solution and broth dilution

The cariostatic mechanisms of fluoride.

UNLABELLED: This article discusses the possible cariostatic mechanisms of the action of fluoride. In the past, fluoride inhibition of caries was ascribed to reduced solubility of enamel due to incorporation of fluoride (F-) into the enamel minerals. The present evidence from clinical and laboratory studies suggests that the caries-preventive mode of action of fluoride is mainly topical. There is convincing evidence that fluoride has a major effect on demineralisation and remineralisation of dental hard tissue. The source of this fluoride could either be fluorapatite (formed due to the incorpor

A comparative in vivo study of natural sweetening agents and their effect on salivary pH levels among children visiting a dental hospital in North India.

Natural sweetening agents have recently gained attention as potential alternatives to refined sugar, owing to their possible non-cariogenic or even protective effects against dental caries. Therefore, it is of interest to evaluate the effect of natural sweetening agents on salivary pH levels in children visiting a dental hospital in North India. This current in vivo study was conducted among 140 children who were randomly allocated to four groups (n = 35 each): Group A (xylitol), Group B (maple syrup), Group C (date sugar) and Group D (distilled water, control). Saliva was collected at baselin

The Role and Progress of Antimicrobial Peptides in Managing Oral Biofilms: A Narrative Review.

Oral chronic infectious diseases are intrinsically linked to the formation of dental plaque biofilms, which significantly enhance bacterial resistance to antimicrobial agents and host defenses. The widespread misuse of antibiotics has further compounded this issue by selecting for drug-resistant microbial populations, complicating the clinical management of biofilm-associated oral diseases. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) have emerged as promising therapeutic agents due to their excellent biocompatibility, broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity, and low propensity for inducing bacterial resistanc

Antibiofilm Activities of a Novel Chimeolysin against Streptococcus mutans under Physiological and Cariogenic Conditions.

Streptococcus mutans often survives as a biofilm on the tooth surface and contributes to the development of dental caries. We investigated the efficacy of ClyR, an engineered chimeolysin, against S. mutans biofilms under physiological and cariogenic conditions. Susceptibility tests showed that ClyR was active against all clinical S. mutans isolates tested as well as S. mutans biofilms that displayed resistance to penicillin. The S. mutans biofilms that formed on hydroxyapatite discs under physiological sugar conditions and cariogenic conditions were reduced ∼2 logs and 3 logs after treatment w

Comparative Evaluation of Antimicrobial Efficacy of Fluoride-Based and Self-Assembling Peptide P11-4-based Tooth Remineralization Agents on Streptococcus mutans: A Microbiological Study.

BACKGROUND: Dental caries is a biofilm-related oral disease that continues to afflict the majority of the world's population. The disease results from an interaction between specific bacteria and dietary constituents within a biofilm known as dental plaque. Among the cariogenic microorganisms, Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) plays pivotal role in caries-inducing processes. OBJECTIVES: Evaluate and compare the antimicrobial efficacy of self-assembling peptide P11-4-based tooth remineralization agents on S. mutans. Naringin as a non-antibiotic agent for multi-species oral biofilm control: in vitro antimicrobial mechanisms and in vivo safety in a rat caries model.

INTRODUCTION: Dental caries is driven by dysbiosis of oral biofilms. Conventional antibiotics easily disrupt oral commensal balance, creating an urgent need for natural, non-antibiotic agents that can target cariogenic biofilms without causing ecological collapse. METHODS: The antimicrobial and antibiofilm efficacy of Naringin was evaluated in vitro against planktonic and biofilm states of Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus sobrinus, Streptococcus sanguinis (mono-species), and their multi-species consortium. Minimum inhibitory/bactericidal concentrations (MIC/MBC) and minimum biofilm inhibit

Anti-biofilm and anti-adherence properties of novel cyclic dipeptides against oral pathogens.

Microorganisms embedded in a biofilm are significantly more resistant to antimicrobial agents and the defences of the human immune system, than their planktonic counterpart. Consequently, compounds that can inhibit biofilm formation are of great interest for novel therapeutics. In this study, a screening approach was used to identify novel cyclic dipeptides that have anti-biofilm activity against oral pathogens. Five new active compounds were identified that prevent biofilm formation by the cariogenic bacterium Streptococcus mutans and the pathogenic fungus Candida albicans. These compounds al

Lethal photosensitisation of oral bacteria and its potential application in the photodynamic therapy of oral infections.

Chemical antibacterial agents are increasingly being used in prophylactic and therapeutic regimes for dental plaque-related diseases, which are among the most common human infections. As these agents are difficult to maintain at a therapeutic concentration in the oral cavity and can be rendered ineffective by resistance development in the target organisms, there is a need to develop alternative antimicrobial approaches. Bacteria and other microbes can be sensitised to light through prior treatment with a chemical photosensitising agent. Lethal photosensitisation of a wide range of bacteria res

A graphene/zinc oxide nanocomposite film protects dental implant surfaces against cariogenic Streptococcus mutans.

Oral biofilms play a crucial role in the development of dental caries and other periodontal diseases. Streptococcus mutans is one of the primary etiological agents in dental caries. Implant systems are regularly employed to replace missing teeth. Oral biofilms accumulate on these implants and are the chief cause of dental implant failure. In the present study, the potential of graphene/zinc oxide nanocomposite (GZNC) against the cariogenic properties of Streptococcus mutans was explored and the anti-biofilm behaviour of artificial acrylic teeth surfaces coated with GZNC was examined. Fluoride ingestion from toothpaste: background to European Union-funded multicentre project.

As in most other established market economies throughout the world the prevalence of dental caries has declined in most Member States of the European Union (EU). There is evidence that the increased use of fluoride toothpaste has been a major factor in this improvement. Recently there has been increasing debate on the alleged link between increased use of fluoride toothpaste, particularly by infants and young children, and increased levels of enamel fluorosis. Central to these discussions are two issues, namely measurement of the amount of fluoride ingested by infants and young children and me
