Short posterior ciliary arteries (sPCA) provide the major blood supply to the optic nerve head. Emerging evidence has linked structural and functional anomalies of sPCA to the pathogenesis of several ocular disorders that cause varying degrees of visual loss, particularly anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy and glaucoma. The purpose of the current study was to investigate the relationship between systemic blood pressure (BP) and long posterior ciliary arterial (LPCA) blood flow (BF) in response to autonomic drugs, and to determine the types of receptors involved. LPCA BF was measured in anesthetized rabbits at the retrobulbar region using laser Doppler flowmetry. OBJECTIVE: In previous research, experimental occlusion of the posterior ciliary arteries resulted in an infarction of the retinal pigment epithelium and outer retina. A simultaneous occlusion of one or two vortex veins (VVs) appeared to have an ameliorative effect on the retinal infarct based on previous clinical and angiographic observations. The filling times of the retinal and choroidal circulation were evaluated in 17 patients with central retinal artery occlusion by means of fluorescein angiography. A correlation between the filling times of the two circulations was found. However, two filling patterns were seen: first, both fillings delayed; second, both fillings normal. Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is an autosomal recessive heterogeneous group of conditions with variable clinical findings like recurrent respiratory tract infections, bronchiectasis, situs inversus, singly or in various combinations. Development of Pulmonary arterial hypertension can be a late complication of this disease.
