Effects of Toxoplasma gondii infection on cognition, symptoms, and response to digital cognitive training in schizophrenia.

Studies indicate that neuroscience-informed digital cognitive training can remediate cognitive impairments in schizophrenia, but the factors contributing to these deficits and response to treatment remain unclear. Toxoplasma gondii is a neuroinvasive parasite linked to cognitive decline that also presents a higher prevalence in schizophrenia. Here, we compared the cognition and symptom severity of IgG seropositive (TOXO+; n = 25) and seronegative (TOXO-; n = 35) patients who participated in a randomized controlled trial of digital cognitive training. At baseline, TOXO+ subjects presented lower

Training the next generation of aging and cognitive health researchers.

Dementia is a growing public health concern, and African Americans and Latinos are disproportionately affected compared to White Americans. Improving cognitive health outcomes and reducing disparities requires a diverse, interdisciplinary workforce. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Healthy Brain Research Network (HBRN) Scholars Program trained racially/ethnically and gender-diverse scholars through mentored, collaborative research. Entry, exit, and alumni surveys and a Scholar Spotlight Series queried motivation, goals, acquired skills, accomplishments, program impact, and s

Cognitive training for divergent thinking in schizophrenia: a pilot study.

Individuals with schizophrenia demonstrate deficits in divergent thinking. This ability is indispensable for generating creative solutions and navigating the complexities of social interactions. In a pilot study, seventeen stable schizophrenia outpatients were randomly assigned to a training program for divergent thinking or a control program on convergent thinking. After eight weeks of training, participants in the divergent thinking program had significantly greater improvements on measures of idea fluency, negative symptoms, and interpersonal relations than did participants receiving the co

Activity flow under the manipulation of cognitive load and training.

Flexible cognitive functions, such as working memory (WM), usually require a balance between localized and distributed information processing. However, it is challenging to uncover how local and distributed processing specifically contributes to task-induced activity in a region. Although the recently proposed activity flow mapping approach revealed the relative contribution of distributed processing, few studies have explored the adaptive and plastic changes that underlie cognitive manipulation. In this study, we recruited 51 healthy volunteers (31 females) and investigated how the activity f

Preliminary Evidence of Biological and Cognitive Efficacy of Prismatic Adaptation Combined with Cognitive Training on Patients with Mild Cognitive Impairment.

Background/Objectives: This study evaluated a novel rehabilitation tool that combines prismatic adaptation (PA) and cognitive training through serious games (SGs) in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) due to prodromal Alzheimer's dementia or consequent to Parkinson's disease. While non-pharmacological interventions have been shown to improve cognition or delay dementia onset, their underlying neurobiological mechanisms, such as brain plasticity, remain unclear. Leveraging studies suggesting neuromodulatory effects of PA, we investigated whether the combined PA+SGs treatment could in

Treadmill Training-Induced Remyelination Rescues Cognitive Impairment After Acute Hypoxia.

Acute and chronic exposure to high altitude causes multiple negative neurological consequences. Further research has shown the efficacy of targeted drugs after acute hypoxia. However, the effects and mechanisms of physical therapy like exercise, on after exposed-induced myelin repair and functional improvements have remained unclear. Here, we explored the efficacy of treadmill training at different intensities on recovery in a rat model of acute hypobaric hypoxia (HH) injury. A 4-week treadmill training scheme was used at 30%, 50%, and 70% of maximum speed. The evolution of oligodendrocyte mor

Older adults' views on training tools to prevent cognitive decline.

Computerized training platforms could be an accessible means for older adults to maintain cognitive health, and several such tools are already commercially available. However, it remains unclear whether older adults use these tools if training is not externally prescribed. We explored older adults' self-initiated experiences with cognitive training. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 13 community-dwelling adults aged 58-85 years, comprising university retirees (N = 8) and public housing residents (N = 5). Interviews were analyzed by thematic analysis. No participants voluntarily used

Interactive computer-based cognitive training in patients with Alzheimer's disease.

The present paper presents data from ten patients suffering from mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease (AD), all of whom were trained to use an interactive computer-based program. Using photographs of the patient and his or her personal surroundings, an everyday task of relevance to the patient was simulated on a PC-touch screen, which the patient was trained to operate. After three weeks of training (three to four sessions a week), the patients needed less help in performing the programs, they became faster, and eight out of ten made fewer mistakes. The results were most pronounced in patients

Validation of a Computerized Cognitive Training Tool to Assess Cognitive Impairment and Enable Differentiation Between Mild Cognitive Impairment and Dementia.

BACKGROUND: Age-related cognitive decline is a chronic, progressive process that requires active clinical management as cognitive status changes. Computerized cognitive training (CCT) provides cognitive exercises targeting specific cognitive domains delivered by computer or tablet. Meanwhile, CCT can be used to regularly monitor the cognitive status of patients, but it is not clear whether CCT can reliably assess cognitive ability or be used to diagnose different stages of cognitive impairment. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether CCT can accurately monitor the cognitive status of patients with
