Colonoscopy is a critical procedure for diagnosing and treating gastrointestinal diseases, but its complexity requires extensive training for proficiency. Complication rates are frequently higher and procedure times frequently longer when colonoscopy is performed by novice endoscopists, indicating a need for effective training tools like virtual simulators. The unrealistic colors and textures of current simulators, however, diminish immersion, thereby limiting their practical utility. To address this, we propose SeamXSim, a seamless-textured colonoscopy simulator that synthesizes real colon im

Colorectal cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed tumor in both males and females in the United States. Current modalities for colorectal cancer screening include fecal occult blood testing, flexible sigmoidoscopy, double-contrast barium enema, and colonoscopy. Virtual colonoscopy is a promising new method for assessing the entire colon. Vining and Gelfand first described this technique in 1994. Since then, virtual colonoscopy has been shown to be extremely safe and well tolerated by patients. Indications for virtual colonoscopy include screening for polyps, incomplete or failed colonosco

Colorectal cancer screening is thought to be an effective tool with which to reduce the mortality from colorectal cancer through early detection and removal of colonic adenomas and early colon cancers. In this article, we review the history, evolution, and current status of imaging tests of the colon-including single-contrast barium enema, double-contrast barium enema, computed tomographic (CT) colonography, and magnetic resonance (MR) colonography-for colorectal cancer screening. Despite its documented value in the detection of colonic polyps, the double-contrast barium enema has largely disa

Over the past decade, computed tomographic (CT) colonography (also known as virtual colonoscopy) has been used to investigate the colon for colorectal neoplasia. Numerous clinical and technical advances have allowed CT colonography to advance slowly from a research tool to a viable option for colorectal cancer screening. However, substantial controversy remains among radiologists, gastroenterologists, and other clinicians with regard to the current role of CT colonography in clinical practice. On the one hand, all agree there is much excitement about a noninvasive imaging examination that can

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to compare diatrizoate and iohexol regarding patient acceptance and fecal-tagging performance in noncathartic computed tomography colonography.
METHODS: This study enrolled 284 volunteers with fecal tagging by either diatrizoate or iohexol at an iodine concentration of 13.33 mg/mL and an iodine load of 24 g. Patient acceptance was rated on a 4-point scale of gastrointestinal discomfort. Two gastrointestinal radiologists jointly analyzed image quality, fecal-tagging density and homogeneity, and residual contrast agent in the small intestine. The results wer

Colonic diverticulitis occurs when diverticula within the colon become infected or inflamed. It is becoming an increasingly common cause for hospital admission, particularly in western society, where it is linked to a low fibre diet. Symptoms of diverticulitis include abdominal pain, diarrhoea and pyrexia, however, symptoms are often non-specific and the clinical diagnosis may be difficult. In addition, elderly patients and those taking corticosteroids may have limited findings on physical examination, even in the presence of severe diverticulitis. A high index of suspicion is required in such

Colorectal cancer is a leading cause of cancer death in the western world. Virtual colonoscopy is a new method for 2-D and 3-D imaging of the colon, using a multislice helical CT technology. This method has already demonstrated excellent results in polyp and cancer detection, having similar accuracy to endoscopic colonoscopy in the detection of polyps above 6 mm in size. The major application of this novel technique is in diagnosing cases where conventional colonoscopy fails to demonstrate the entire colon due to technical problems. The second important application is to investigate the colon

1. ESGE/ESGAR recommend computed tomographic colonography (CTC) as the radiological examination of choice for the diagnosis of colorectal neoplasia. Strong recommendation, high quality evidence. ESGE/ESGAR do not recommend barium enema in this setting. Strong recommendation, high quality evidence.2. ESGE/ESGAR recommend CTC, preferably the same or next day, if colonoscopy is incomplete. The timing depends on an interdisciplinary decision including endoscopic and radiological factors. Strong recommendation, low quality evidence. ESGE/ESGAR suggests that, in centers with expertise in and availab

Left hemicolectomy is a standard surgical method for cancer of the descending colon. Resection involves the region from the left side of the transverse colon to the sigmoid colon. Although laparoscopic hemicolectomy is widely used, it is difficult to determine an appropriate resection range during surgery because of the limited visual field. Simulation computed tomography colonography(S-CTC), which combines CTC and 3-dimensional vascular imaging, enables the surgeon to clearly identify the position of the primary lesion and dominant vessel. We present 3 cases of cancer of the descending colon

The development of colorectal cancer screening programs in many countries has led to increasingly large numbers of patients undergoing optical colonoscopy. Although acute complications from screening optical colonoscopy are uncommon, they may occur in up to 5% or more of patients where biopsies or therapeutic procedures are performed. Abdominal radiographs are of value only for the detection of intraperitoneal perforation. There is a wide spectrum of other important associated complications. Such complications are most reliably identified using abdominal and pelvic CT, which also can guide app

INTRODUCTION: We retrospectively evaluated the performance of preoperative computed tomographic (CT) colonography to detect tumor involvement of the rectosigmoid wall and predict the need for rectosigmoid resection in patients with primary ovarian cancer.
METHODS: Thirty-three patients with primary ovarian cancer who underwent preoperative CT colonographic examination were evaluated. The images of the examination were analyzed and compared with the subsequent surgical findings.
RESULTS: All abnormal findings (malignant infiltration of the rectosigmoid mucosa and extrinsic compression) reveal

Computed tomographic (CT) colonography is a new-generation technique for detecting colorectal neoplasms by using volumetric CT data combined with specialized imaging software. Patient examinations require full colonic preparation, insufflation, and data acquisition with the patient in the supine and prone positions. Current CT technology allows a single image of the colon to be acquired in as little as 20 seconds with a minimum of patient discomfort. Specialized computer software for interpretation usually combines transverse, multiplanar reformation, and three-dimensional endoluminal images f

Numerous filling defects may be detected in the colon during interpretation of data sets obtained with computed tomographic (CT) colonography. A series of 230 patients were evaluated with thin-section multidetector row CT colonography immediately before conventional colonoscopy. In all cases, the interpreting radiologist and gastroenterologist reviewed the imaging findings as well as the results of histologic analysis of biopsy specimens to determine the causes of filling defects. In many cases, the cause of a filling defect can be confidently determined at CT colonography by using combination

BACKGROUND: Computed tomography colonography (CTC) is a minimally invasive examination for radiologic imaging of the entire colon and rectum. It has replaced the now obsolete barium enemas and represents an important option to colonoscopy for the detection of colorectal neoplasia.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this article is to review the current status of CTC for detection of colorectal cancer (CRC) and its precursors.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Based on an extensive literature research, the current role of CTC in colorectal cancer imaging is summarized. This includes not only CRC detection but also

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate if an adequate bowel preparation for CT colonography, can be achieved without diet restriction, using a reduced amount of cathartic agent and fecal tagging. To investigate the influence of patients' characteristics on bowel preparation and the impact on patients' compliance.
METHODS: In total, 1446 outpatients scheduled for elective CT colonography were prospectively enrolled. All patients had the same bowel preparation based on a reduced amount of cathartic agent (120 g of macrogol in 1.5 l of water) the day before the exam and a fecal tagging agent (60 ml of hyperosmo
