Heterogeneity in the associations of community gathering place participation with healthy ageing.

BACKGROUND: Extending healthy life expectancy is a critical policy priority in aging societies worldwide. In Japan, community gathering places (CGPs) for older adults, which are resident-led group activities conducted in accessible local spaces. While prior studies have suggested benefits of CGPs participation, most evidence is limited to single municipalities. The potential heterogeneity in benefits across sociodemographic subgroups remains unclear. METHODS: We analyzed data from 55,982 community-dwelling older adults aged 65 years or older across 21 municipalities participating in the Japan

Impact of Participation in Community-Based Research Among Undergraduate and Graduate Students.

Participation in community-based research provides college students with a high-impact experience involving both research and service learning. Presently, the impact of participation in community-based research projects has been measured most often through the use of post-learning course evaluations and case studies. The authors describe the impact of participation in community-based research, at a small liberal arts college, on undergraduate education students and graduate physical therapy students using the Community-Based Research Student Learning Outcomes Survey. Results from 2 years of su

Effectiveness of a peer-support community in addiction recovery: participation as intervention.

The main purpose of the study was to determine whether a peer-support community programme would reduce relapse rates among clients recovering from substance addictions and homelessness and result in increased perceived community affiliation, supportive behaviours, self-determination and quality of life. Mixed methods were utilized including semi-structured interviews, participant observation and a pretest/post-test to evaluate changes on the quality of life rating, the Medical Outcomes Study-Social Support Survey, and the Volitional Questionnaire. [Community participation and control of endemic diseases in Brazil: problems and possibilities].

Community participation (CP) is considered one of the most important elements for the control of endemic diseases in poor countries, particularly for prevention and epidemiological surveillance. Mainly affecting the poorest segments of the population, endemic diseases are costly and require specific government action aimed at efficient, egalitarian, universal health system, where CP acts in a guardian, monitoring capacity and entails other specific tasks. Despite its rationality, CP has not been encouraged in countries like Brazil, due to the highly centralized nature of political power and ac

Community participation in the control of onchocerciasis in Cross River State, Nigeria.

Human onchocerciasis is reported to occur in all States of the Federal Republic of Nigeria with serious medical, social and economic impact on affected communities. Attempted control schemes have failed because of reinvasion caused by limited area coverage, short duration of the scheme and non-involvement of the affected communities. As the Nigeria National Onchocerciasis Control Programme (NOCP) takes off with baseline data collection, it is essential to point out the need for community participation in the programme. Information obtained from group interviews in 8 villages in Akamkpa Local G

Health promotion, community development, and participation: an approach to native health education.

Health-care parameters for Natives living in isolated northern areas of Canada show rates of life expectancy, morbidity, and infant mortality far worse than the Canadian average. Improving access to medical facilities has not affected these statistics. Socioeconomic factors such as inadequate housing and lack of sewage systems are likely contributors to poor health, as is an attitude of hopelessness and impotence on the part of Native people. Health-care providers have recognized the need for health promotion as well as treatment, but have often instituted programs that blame the victim. An ap

Community-based sport-leisure participation and perceived community psychological resilience: a three-wave RI-CLPM study of community identification and collective efficacy.

OBJECTIVE: In modern risk societies, community psychological resilience has become an important concern for community psychology and behavioral science. Yet less is known about how everyday community-based sport-leisure participation contributes to residents' perceived community psychological resilience over time. This study examined whether residents' community-based sport-leisure participation predicts subsequent perceived community psychological resilience and whether this association is explained by community identification and collective efficacy. METHODS: A three-wave longitudinal surve

Community music activity participation and loneliness among Chinese young adults living alone.

BACKGROUND: Loneliness has become an increasingly salient psychological and social issue among young adults in contemporary urban China. Young adults living alone may be particularly vulnerable because of reduced daily companionship, limited opportunities for sustained social interaction, and relatively weak emotional support networks. As an accessible form of cultural and social participation embedded in community settings, community music activity may be relevant to loneliness among young adults living alone. However, the associations linking community music participation, perceived restorat

Participation in mass dog vaccination campaigns in Tanzania: Benefits of community engagement.

BACKGROUND: Canine rabies causes about 59,000 human deaths each year globally but the disease can be eliminated by sustaining sufficient dog vaccination coverage over several consecutive years. A challenge to achieving high coverage is low participation of dog owners in vaccination campaigns. We explored whether and how previously identified contributory factors to low participation can be addressed through community engagement activities. METHODS: We engaged communities in two wards in Tanzania on dog behavior and handling, safe ways of interacting with dogs, and their perceptions of dog vac

Smartphone Application for Measuring Community Participation in Veterans With Traumatic Brain Injury.

The goal in the rehabilitation of veterans with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is to improve community participation. A tool that can objectively measure community participation is lacking. The aims of this study are to evaluate the feasibility of a smartphone application (app) called MOVES to objectively measure community participation; and compare MOVES with a self-report questionnaire, and differences between veterans with mTBI and civilians without TBI. It is a 6-week parallel observational study, which included seven veterans with blast-related mTBI and five civilians without TBI. The

Reconstructing Social Participation in Rural Communities: A Qualitative Study of Community Nursing Practice.

Introduction Participation is a central outcome in community-based rehabilitation, particularly in aging societies where social isolation among older adults is increasing. Community nurses have emerged as key facilitators of social participation in community settings. However, the mechanisms through which community nurses reconstruct participation in everyday practice remain insufficiently understood. This study aimed to clarify how community nurses reconstruct and facilitate participation in community-based rehabilitation. Methods This retrospective qualitative study analyzed activity logs an
