Emergent mechanical support in the community: improvement with early transplant center referral.

Emergent mechanical support for the failing ventricle, with eventual transfer for definitive care, is often required at non-transplant centers. Transfer for definitive care, in terms of bridge to transplant, may require ventricular assist device (VAD) placement at the primary institution or at the transplant center. Review of consecutive single transplant center referrals was conducted to decipher optimal management. From January 1997 to December 2000, 104 patients were transferred to the University of Pennsylvania Heart Failure/Transplant Service. Most were transferred from active cardiac sur

Guidance on Community-Based Mental Health Support for Black Youth in Canada.

Evidence indicates disparities in mental health outcomes among Black youth compared to other racial and ethnic groups. These disparities may be related to gaps in the quality of mental health services and inadequate culturally safe practices, which hinder the ability to appropriately support the mental health needs of Black youth. This study aimed to develop a guidance document with recommendations for the delivery of mental health services for Black youth in Canada, focusing on community, primary care, and educational settings, informed by a knowledge synthesis and the perspectives of Black y

Mobilizing community support in people receiving opioid-agonist treatment: A group approach.

This descriptive study evaluates a novel group intervention designed to help opioid-dependent patients in medication-assisted treatment identify and recruit drug-free individuals to support recovery efforts. The Social Network Activation Group works with patients who are actively using drugs and resistant to including drug-free family or friends in treatment. The group encourages patients to attend structured recovery, religious, or recreational activities in the community to find recovery support. For those with underutilized support, motivational interviewing and skills training are used to

A community-academic partnership to develop an implementation support package for overdose prevention in permanent supportive housing.

INTRODUCTION: The overdose crisis in the U.S. disproportionately impacts people experiencing homelessness. Permanent supportive housing (PSH) - permanent, affordable housing with voluntary support services - is an effective, evidence-based intervention to address homelessness. However, overdose risk remains high even after entering PSH for individual and structural reasons. In this study, we aimed to refine a set of evidence-based overdose prevention practices (EBPs) and an associated implementation support package for PSH settings using focus groups with PSH tenants, frontline staff, and lead

Social support in cyberspace: a content analysis of communication within a Huntington's disease online support group.

OBJECTIVE: Huntington's disease (HD) is an inherited disorder, characterized by a progressive degeneration of the brain. Due to the nature of the symptoms, the genetic element of the disease, and the fact that there is no cure, HD patients and those in their support network often experience considerable stress and anxiety. With an expansion in Internet access, individuals affected by HD have new opportunities for information retrieval and social support. The aim of this study is to examine the provision of social support in messages posted to a HD online support group bulletin board. METHODS:

Perceived Community Support, Users' Interactions, and Value Co-Creation in Online Health Community: The Moderating Effect of Social Exclusion.

Online health communities (OHCs) face the same problem as other social media platforms in terms of decreasing activity and user attrition. Drawing upon organizational support theory, this study explores how perceived community support affects user interactions and value co-creation which in turn influence their continuous participation. OHCs act as both health knowledge-sharing platforms and important social media for patients, and thus, interpersonal interactions in OHCs are categorized into health-related and general topic interactions. Considering the identity of patients, this study also e

Developing a screening instrument for underlying core domains of communicative competence in children with communication support needs.

A socio-neurocognitive approach to augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) shows several underlying domains of communicative competence: Attention, perception, cognition, memory, orientation, socio-emotional development, motor skills, and language. To determine developmental markers of these underlying core domains of communicative competence in children with communication support needs, we developed a new screening instrument. The present article consists of three consecutive studies. In study 1, we constructed the first version of the screening instrument based on a sample of both c

The Behaviour Support Elements Checklist: Profiling intervention elements in community-based behaviour support for sexualised behavior after acquired brain injury.

BACKGROUND: The challenges associated with behavior dysregulation post acquired brain injury (ABI) are well documented. In a previous publication, we described a case series in which sexualized behavior post-ABI was reduced using multi-element behavior support interventions. In this publication, we describe the intervention elements used, as summarized using a one-page recording tool: The Behavior Support Elements Checklist (BSEC). INSTRUMENT: The BSEC contains three categories indicating the target for change: the individual with ABI, their support network members, or other environmental asp
