Degradation of Tetracyclines in Pig Manure by Composting with Rice Straw.

A holistic approach was followed for utilizing tetracyclines (TCs)-contaminated pig manure, by composting this with rice straw in a greenhouse for CO₂ fertilization and composted residue application. After composting, the composted residues can be applied to cropland as a supplemental source of synthetic fertilizers. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of pig manure-rice straw composting on the degradation of TCs in pig manure. The results showed that greenhouse composting significantly accelerated the degradation of TCs. Contents (150 mg·kg(-1)) of oxytetracycline (OTC), t

Factors influencing chemical quality of composted poultry waste.

The need for organic recycling is justified in the case of poultry waste because after ensuring hygienization there is a chance of obtaining a compost with substantial fertilizer value. Organic recycling of slaughter waste has its justification in sustainable development and retardation of resources. In the research being described, composting of hydrated poultry slaughterhouse waste with maize straw was carried out. Combinations with fodder yeast and postcellulose lime were also introduced in order to modify chemical and physicochemical properties of the mixtures. The experiment was carried o

Influence of biochar addition on the humic substances of composting manures.

Application of biochar (10% v/v) to a manure composting matrix was investigated to evaluate its effect on the chemical composition of humic substances during the composting process. The characteristics of the humic acid (HA) and fulvic acid (FA) fractions were analyzed in compost mixtures originating from two different manures (poultry manure (PM) and cow manure (CM)). The C contents of HA and FA from the manure compost/biochar blends (PM+B and CM+B) were higher than those from PM and CM, with an enhanced recalcitrant fraction, as determined by thermogravimetric analysis. Spectroscopic analysi

Mobility of veterinary drugs in soil with application of manure compost.

Sulfonamides and tetracyclines are pharmaceuticals widely used to treat human and animal diseases. They are of considerable concern in Korea because of the potential risk of residues in aquatic and terrestrial environments. This study investigated the mobility of veterinary drugs in the soil column with the application of manure compost to assess the risk of groundwater contamination by leaching in the Korean agricultural environment. The degree of sulfonamides and tetracyclines mobility, measured by the concentration of leachates from silty loam soil for 9 days, was observed being on the firs

Recycling mineral nutrients to farmland via compost application.

Increased cultivation of farmland has resulted in nutrient deficiency and consequently fertility degradation of soils. This research examined the application of composted wastes in terms of the feasibility and effectiveness of recycling plant essential minerals. Minerals in composts (derived from sewage sludge, livestock excrement, and municipal solid wastes, respectively) and in amended soils were observed. Ca/Mg ratios in amended soils and the effect of compost applications (mineral nutrients and heavy metals) on plant uptake were also studied. Results showed that composts, especially those

Relationship between compost stability and extractable organic carbon.

Establishing a simple yet reliable compost stability test is essential for a better compost quality control and utilization efficiency. The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between extractable organic carbon (OC) and compost stability based on 18 compost samples from five composting facilities. The compost samples were extracted sequentially with water for 2 h [water(2h)] and 0.1 M NaOH for 2 and 24 h [NaOH(2h) and NaOH(24h), respectively]. The extractable OC was further separated into fulvic acid (FA) and humic acid (HA) fractions by adjusting the pH to <2. The mass spe

Enhancing aerobic composting of food waste by adding hydrolytically active microorganisms.

The biomass of native microorganisms in food waste (FW) suitable for accelerated composting is initially low and requires time for adaptation. Adding of efficient hydrolytic microorganisms should be able to enhance compost-specific microbial activity, adjust microbial community structure, and potentially hasten FW biodegradation. This study aimed to identify bacterial and fungal strains with growth characteristics suitable for accelerating FW composting. Over 7 weeks, FW was composted in a pilot-scale test, either inoculated at the start or on day 28 with three different mixtures of 10 autocht

Composting of limed fleshings generated in a tannery: sustainable waste management.

In tanneries, limed fleshing is an unavoidable waste generated in beamhouse operation. Proper management of limed fleshing with protein, fat, lime, and sulfide will help to protect the natural environment and at least reduce the pollution that ends up in it. In this study, excluding any pretreatment, limed fleshing is used for compost production. Chopped and mixed limed fleshing with chicken manure, cow dung, and sawdust was heaped onto a horizontal bamboo frame. Three composting heaps were fabricated weighing 720, 700, and 760 kg. The turning of composting materials in the heaps causes temper

Composting susceptible fruit wastes reduces Drosophila suzukii (Diptera: Drosophilidae) reproductive habitat.

BACKGROUND: Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura) (Diptera: Drosophilidae) is an invasive, polyphagous vinegar fly pest that is primarily controlled by calendar-based broad-spectrum insecticide programs. Nonchemical management tactics are urgently needed to reestablish IPM within affected berry and cherry cropping systems. Composting is a post-harvest crop sanitation strategy that could potentially be used to manage D. suzukii infestation of fruit wastes. RESULTS: This study found that D. suzukii emergence decreased exponentially with an increasing proportion of chicken manure, with emergence reduce

Enhancing cow manure composting via staged inoculation of functional microbial consortia.

Aerobic composting of cattle manure is often limited by slow humification and long duration. This study evaluated a staged inoculation strategy using phase-specific microbial consortia to enhance composting efficiency. Cow manure and rice straw were composted under four treatments: no inoculant (W), staged commercial EM inoculant (EM), single initial composite inoculant (TF), and staged targeted consortia (YF). The YF treatment achieved the longest thermophilic phase (11 days, peak 62.87 °C), the highest humic substances (122.02 g/kg) and humic acid (92.32 g/kg), and the highest total nitrogen

Fe2O3 nanoparticles drive enhanced composting humification by modulating bacteriophage-bacteria interactions.

Although bacteria are responsible for decomposing organic matter and forming humic substances (HS) during composting, the role of bacteriophages in carbon metabolism cannot be ignored. In this study, integrated metagenomics and untargeted metabolomic analysis were used to explore the interaction mechanism between bacteriophages and bacteria on the humification process in composting with added Fe2O3 nanoparticles (NPs). The results showed that Fe2O3 NPs optimized the function of the bacterial community by maintaining a high relative abundance of Bacillota, promoting organic matter degradation,

Antibiotic degradation dominates the removal of antibiotic resistance genes during composting.

To identify the key hosts involved in horizontal gene transfer (HGT) and vertical gene transfer (VGT) of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and to determine the extent to and ways in which environmental properties contribute to ARG removal, the changes in ARG profile and key hosts during biogas residue and pig manure composting were investigated using metagenomic sequencing coupled with network analysis. Composting significantly reduced the abundances of ARGs other than bacA. Seventy and 41 hosts from Firmicutes, Actinobacteria, Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes were associated with HGT and VGT

[Degradation Characteristics of Antibiotics During Composting of Four Types of Feces].

The widespread use of antibiotics in feed results in a large number of antibiotic residues in feces. Composting technology can degrade these residual antibiotics. A pilot-scale aerobic composting device was used to analyze the antibiotic residues and composting degradation characteristics of four types of feces (maggot manure, chicken manure, pig manure, and cow manure). Results showed that sulfonamides (SAs), fluoroquinolones (FQs), tetracycline (TCs), and macrolides (MAs) were the main antibiotics, and different type of feces had different dominant antibiotics. The contents of FQs and oxytet
