Nutrient balance in a paddy field with a recycling irrigation system.

We studied nutrient balance in a paddy field that had a recycling irrigation system and evaluated the effect of the irrigation system on nutrient balance during the irrigation period, from April to August 2002. Chemical fertilizer was the main input of phosphorus; the soil absorbed about 56% of it. The amount of nitrogen supplied by the irrigation system was higher than in a representative paddy field, and the amount of nitrogen fertilizer used was decreased because the irrigation water was partly reused. About 20% of applied nitrogen was lost by denitrification. The net outflows of phosphorus

Tampa Bay observing network: a continuous data acquisition system in support of science and environmental management.

The Tampa Bay estuary is a vital ecological and economic hub, whose productive, shallow-water habitats are highly vulnerable to both chronic anthropogenic stress and acute environmental disturbance events (e.g., extreme weather, human incidents). Historically, the bay's health was monitored primarily through low-frequency, monthly field sampling that has provided a foundational baseline of water quality for the last fifty years. However, discrete sampling is inadequate for capturing the rapid, high-frequency processes that govern the bay's physics and biogeochemistry. Recent perturbations to t

Redescription of the rare, incompletely described Mongolodiaptomus rarus (Ranga Reddy, Sanoamuang & Dumont, 1998) (Copepoda, Calanoida, Diaptomidae), from freshwater habitats in northeast Thailand, with comments on conservation status.

The genus Mongolodiaptomus Kiefer currently contains 17 species, distributed across Asia, predominantly occurring in countries in the lower Mekong River Basin. Herein, Mongolodiaptomus rarus (Ranga Reddy, Sanoamuang & Dumont, 1998), an incompletely described species, is redescribed based on specimens from Thailand. Morphologically, it belongs to the M. gladiolus species group, closely similar to M. calcarus (Shen & Tai, 1965), M. dumonti Sanoamuang, 2001, and M. gladiolus (Shen & Lee, 1963). M. rarus is, however, distinctly different from its congeners, in particular the prolonged oval shape o

Operationalizing the Concept of Socio-environmental Tipping Points in River Basin Management.

The concept of socio-environmental tipping points (SETPs) is gaining interest as a means to describe nonlinear transformations in socio-environmental systems that are driven by both biophysical and social dynamics. These SETPs stem from multiple interacting factors that can rarely be traced to a single driver, leading to significant complexity and uncertainty. Structured frameworks can support the rigorous identification and assessment of SETPs, but little research exists that applies them in practice. This research utilizes a previously developed conceptual framework to identify prospective S

Introduced Fish in Mountains: State of Published Research on their Removal from Lentic Ecosystems.

The introduction of alien fish in freshwater ecosystems has become an increasing concern over the last decades and a considerable amount of literature exists on their ecological consequences. However, less is known about their management and eradication, particularly in mountain ecosystems, where fish introductions have been carried out over decades. Here, we systematically mapped and reviewed peer-reviewed literature on fish removal in mountain ecosystems, with a focus on standing waters. The results of our work indicate important spatial and taxonomic biases, with most published studies perf

Scale-dependent biases in systematic land cover maps undermine freshwater ecological assessment.

Land cover is a key determinant of landscape structure and ecological processes across spatial and temporal scales. In freshwater ecosystems, where riparian and catchment land cover regulate hydrology, nutrient inputs, and habitat quality, most ecological assessments rely on systematically produced land cover maps whose reliability varies with scale and context. Despite their widespread use, the extent to which these products accurately represent landscape patterns and long-term dynamics at ecologically relevant scales remains poorly understood. Here, we evaluate the reliability of systematic

Advancing circular economy in the water-energy-food nexus: A framework for sustainable resource use.

This study presents a transformative approach to achieving near-zero CO2 emissions in a fossil fuel-based industrial region by integrating circular economy (CE) principles with water-energy-food (WEF) nexus optimization. Utilizing a linear optimization model in the OSeMOSYS software, the study simulates the Climate-Land-Water-Energy nexus, considering population growth, rapid industrialization, and climate change. The findings indicate that achieving near-zero CO2 emissions, by reducing annual emissions from 4 million tons to 0.4 million tons, requires a combination of Carbon Capture, Utilizat

Occupancy trends of overwintering coastal waterbird communities reveal guild-specific patterns of redistribution and shifting reliance on existing protected areas.

Climate change and anthropogenic stressors are redistributing species and altering community composition globally. Protected areas (PAs) may not sufficiently protect populations of species undergoing distributional shifts, necessitating that we evaluate existing PAs and identify areas for future protection to conserve biodiversity across regional and temporal scales. Coastal waterbirds are important indicators of marine ecosystem health, representing mobile, long-lived, higher trophic-level consumers. Using a 20-year citizen science dataset (1999-2019) with a before-after control-intervention

Assessing coastal bathymetry and climate change impacts on coastal ecosystems using Landsat 8 and Sentinel-2 satellite imagery.

Coastal ecosystems are facing heightened risks due to human-induced climate change, including rising water levels and intensified storm events. Accurate bathymetry data is crucial for assessing the impacts of these threats. Traditional data collection methods can be cost-prohibitive. This study investigates the feasibility of using freely accessible Landsat and Sentinel satellite imagery to estimate bathymetry and its correlation with hydrographic chart soundings in Port Klang, Malaysia. Through analysis of the blue and green spectral bands from the Landsat 8 and Sentinel 2 datasets, a bathyme

Water managements limit heavy metal accumulation in rice: Dual effects of iron-plaque formation and microbial communities.

Understanding the mechanisms on how water management can minimize the concentrations of heavy metals in rice grains is important. Two water managements were concerned in our studies, including continuously flooding and alternate wetting and drying (AWD). Compared to AWD, a continuously flooded culture reduces the concentration of cadmium and other metals in the rice grains by reducing the root-to-shoot translocation and the availability of metals in rhizosphere. In a flooded environment, the rice rhizosphere was characterized by an increased soil pH, reduced fluorescein diacetate (FDA) activit

Optimizing water-reuse and increasing water-saving potentials by linking treated industrial and municipal wastewater for a sustainable urban development.

New industrial and urban developments in water-scarce regions are often inhibited by their high demand for water from natural resources. In addition, there often is a lack of water for purposes that contribute to an improved quality of life, such as urban green spaces. Therefore, the integrated industrial-urban water-reuse concept presents a strategy by linking and reusing treated industrial and municipal wastewater flows to increase urban water-reuse potentials. The concept of combining different reuse water flows, from wastewater treatment plants from industrial parks, aims at significantly

Numerical simulation and assessment of seawater intrusion under coastal brine extraction: implications for groundwater management in the Weibei Plain, China.

Seawater intrusion poses a growing threat to groundwater sustainability in coastal aquifers, particularly in regions affected by intensive groundwater extraction and coastal brine extraction. Based on regional hydrogeological conditions and long-term monitoring data, a three-dimensional variable-density groundwater flow and solute transport model was developed for the phreatic and confined aquifer systems within 150 m depth of the Weibei Plain (Shandong, China). Four pumping scenarios were designed to evaluate the impacts of groundwater extraction patterns on seawater intrusion dynamics. The r

Adapt water reserves to climate change: study case Romania.

At the regional level, hydrological factors, catchment properties, as well as the way water reserves are utilized, represent major determining factors of the reactions of lake ecosystems to climate change (CC). In this context, lakes also have a negative impact related to the large amounts of water they can consume through evaporation. This paper quantifies the effects of a small artificial lake-Dridu from Romania (with complex usage) on the environment in the context of CC, estimating the blue water footprint (WF) and carbon footprint (CF) under different use scenarios. Thus, an analysis of t

[Assessment of ecological environment benefits of reclaimed water reuse in Beijing].

With the rapid development of the social economy and the sustained growth of population, China is facing increasingly serious water problems, and reclaimed water utilization has become an effective measure to solve water shortage problem and to control further deterioration of the ecological environment. Reclaimed water utilization can not only save a lot of fresh water, but also reduce the environmental impact of wastewater discharge, and thus has great ecological environmental benefits, including resource, environmental and human health benefits and so on. This study used the opportunity cos

Treatment of toilet wastewater for reuse in a membrane bioreactor.

Toilet wastewater is treated and reused on site at Europe's highest membrane bioreactor (MBR), located in a cable car mountain station in the ski resort of Zermatt. Negative impacts on the sensitive mountain environment are minimised by reusing close to 100% of the treated wastewater for toilet flushing. Besides 100% nitrogen removal, 80% of phosphorus was also eliminated. This paper presents operational results, optimisations of sludge management, decoloration and long-term maintenance of biomass in the very low-loaded summer season. From a global view the experiences and results of the proje

Continuous flushing of contaminants from ballast water tanks.

The transport of non-indigenous species (NIS) with ship ballast water is a major environmental problem. The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) have recommended that ballast tanks are flushed through with sea water to remove NIS contaminants. The flushing efficiency is studied using mathematical models and a scaled experimental model of a ballast tank. The density contrast between the ballast water and water used for flushing is important when the Froude number Fr(w)=U(w)/sqr rt|g(')|H << 1 (defined in terms of average horizontal flow U(w), reduced buoyancy g', and H the vertical dimensi

Pilot-scale demonstration of cyclodextrin as a solubility-enhancement agent for remediation of a tetrachloroethene-contaminated aquifer.

The limitations associated with conventional pump and treat technology have generated interest in using enhanced in-situ flushing as an alternative for remediating source zones contaminated with immiscible liquid. This research investigates the effectiveness of cyclodextrin as a solubility-enhancement agent to enhance the removal of tetrachloroethene (PCE) from a physically isolated section of an aquifer. An important component of this project was the implementation of reagent recovery and reuse. This field experiment presented the rare opportunity, under strict regulatory guidance, to inject
