Addressing India's alcohol misuse crisis: The urgent need for screening and brief intervention to bridge the healthcare gap.

India faces a significant challenge with alcohol misuse, as evidenced by the national survey revealing that 57 million out of 160 million persons with alcohol use exhibit harmful or dependent patterns, necessitating professional assistance. The Global Status Report on Alcohol and Health (2018) indicates a rising per capita alcohol consumption in the Southeast Asian Region, with India contributing substantially. To address this, implementing policies and programs to curb hazardous alcohol use is crucial. Despite a shortage of mental health professionals in India, they remain the primary caregiv

Adjustment reactions: a long-term prospective and retrospective follow-up of former patients in a crisis intervention ward.

The results of a 5-year follow-up study of 76 patients in a crisis intervention ward who were suffering from an adjustment reaction (brief or prolonged depressive reaction) according to ICD-9 criteria indicate a rather favorable course and outcome using standardized instruments. Only 17% developed a chronic or severe course of primarily depressive symptoms and only 1 (2%) patient committed suicide after discharge, whereas 64% had a very favorable and 18% a favorable course and outcome. This result is reflected in a rather low use of psychiatric and psychotherapeutic outpatient services during

Implementation and outcomes of a brief crisis intervention for adolescents with borderline personality features: a pre-post observational study.

BACKGROUND: Suicide is one of the leading causes of death among young people. Borderline personality features have been identified as a risk factor for suicide-related behaviour among adolescents. Targeted brief interventions may facilitate early identification and intervention. METHODS: A single-group pre-post observational study design examined implementation of a brief crisis intervention (Gold Card SA) for adolescents aged 12–17 years-of-age, delivered in outpatient hospital and community mental health settings. The intervention offered up to three weekly psychologically focussed sessions

Non-pharmacological interventions for managing sickle cell crisis pain: A qualitative study on adolescents' and caregivers' experiences.

Sickle cell crisis (SCC), characterized by recurrent acute pain episodes, is the most common reason for hospitalization among adolescents with sickle cell disease (SCD), a common hemoglobinopathy in Nigeria. SCC pain is challenging to manage, undertreated, and adolescents are often stigmatized and labelled as drug seekers. The combined use of analgesics and non-pharmacological interventions (NPIs) is highly recommended for optimal pain management. Studies indicate high usage of NPIs among adolescents, including unsafe interventions. This study aims to explore the experiences of adolescents and

Social interventions in times of crisis: Community perceptions of integrating social determinants and equity into the COVID-19 response.

In the wake of the 2020 crisis, scientific and governmental authorities sought to formally integrate social determinants and equity into the COVID-19 pandemic response. This article offers an empirical examination of COVID-19 social interventions presented as equitable with how stratified communities experienced these measures on the ground. We combine qualitative findings from a content analysis of State of California equity policies (n = 12) on housing security, economic relief, and essential workforce with semi-structured interviews (n = 79) conducted across three structurally unequal commu

Predictors of response after single session interventions for emotional distress: using enhanced psychoeducation in crisis situations.

OBJECTIVE: Single-session interventions are an effective strategy for reducing emotional distress. Enhanced psychoeducation, which includes empathic listening, risk stratification, symptom monitoring, and habit modification is particularly suitable for single-session interventions. We investigated predictors of response to an online enhanced psychoeducation intervention among essential service professionals during the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil. METHODS: The TelePSI Project, financed by the Brazilian Ministry of Health, was a nationwide initiative that served more than 3,300 individuals in v

Crisis intervention related to the use of psychoactive substances in recreational settings--evaluating the Kosmicare Project at Boom Festival.

Kosmicare project implements crisis intervention in situations related to the use of psychoactive substances at Boom Festival (Portugal). We present evaluation research that aims to contribute to the transformation of the project into an evidence-based intervention model. It relies on harm reduction and risk minimization principles, crisis intervention models, and Grof's psychedelic psychotherapy approach for crisis intervention in situations related to unsupervised use of psychedelics. Intervention was expected to produce knowledge about the relation between substance use and mental health im

Police and Behavioral Health Professionals' Experiences with a Hybrid Co-response Approach to Mental Health Crisis Intervention: Qualitative Findings.

As initiatives to address mental health crises are expanding throughout the United States, many efforts are focused on police, who often respond first to these emergencies. Co-response models have grown substantially over the past several decades. However, there is a limited evidence base for hybrid models that pair in-person police officers with virtual, on-demand behavioral health professionals (BHPs). This hybrid modality is important to assess given the increased use of telehealth for behavioral health services more generally to improve accessibility. Drawing from semi-structured interview

[Clinical Crisis Intervention and Psychosocial Support in Somatic Clinics in Germany - Results of a Nation-Wide Cross-Sectional Study].

BACKGROUND: In everyday care at somatic clinics, patients, their relatives and staff can be confronted with potentially traumatic crisis situations. Although there are established standards for psychosocial emergency care (PSNV) in pre-hospital and non-hospital settings, no comparable system exists within hospitals. PROBLEM: Clinical crisis intervention (KKI) and psychosocial support (PSU) are currently in the early stages of professionalisation. Support services vary in terms of their focus, target group specificity and internal implementation. The different terminology poses an additional c

Bridging the gap in adrenal crisis management: a pilot simulation-based pre post educational intervention to improve resident knowledge.

BACKGROUND: Adrenal crisis (AC) is a rare but life-threatening pediatric emergency requiring rapid recognition and immediate administration of stress-dose glucocorticoids. Because AC is infrequently encountered during clinical training, pediatric and medicine pediatric residents may lack confidence and knowledge regarding timely diagnosis of adrenal insufficiency (AI), sick-day management, appropriate hydrocortisone dosing, and appropriate acute AC management. Simulation-based education provides a controlled environment to address these critical gaps. The objective of this pilot study was to a

The relocation of a psychiatric crisis intervention unit from a somatic to a psychiatric hospital: a multi-method observational study.

The Crisis Intervention Ward relocated from a general hospital to a psychiatric hospital in Basel, Switzerland, on May 26, 2023. We hypothesize that this relocation influenced patient demographics, frequencies of main diagnoses, involuntary admissions, transfer rates, clinical outcomes, patient satisfaction, and clinician perceptions of the treatment setting. We compared two patient cohorts: one from a 12 month period pre-relocation and the other from a 12 month period post-relocation. Two outpatient clinician surveys-one conducted pre- and one post-relocation-assessed location ratings, treatm

Adolescents' perspectives on non-pharmacological pain interventions for sickle cell crisis management: A population-based survey.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Nigeria has the highest sickle cell disease (SCD) prevalence globally. Research indicates that adolescents often utilize non-pharmacological interventions (NPIs) to cope with recurrent painful sickle cell crises (SCC) while navigating the complex biopsychosocial challenges of adolescence. This study explored the use and perceived value of NPIs for managing SCC pain from the perspectives of Nigerian adolescents, including their preferred media for NPI educational resources. METHODS: A population-based survey targeted adolescents aged 12-18 living with SCD in Nigeria. Adolesc

Three noteworthy idiosyncrasies related to Canada's opioid-death crisis, and implications for public health-oriented interventions.

Canada has been experiencing a prolonged public health-crisis of high rates of overdose deaths caused by exceptionally potent/toxic, illicit opioid use. While many key features of this drug death epidemic are well-documented, several idiosyncratic aspects with relevance for public health-oriented interventions are not adequately recognised. These include: (i) the discrepant opioid patterns pan-Canada, with large majorities of opioid deaths caused by illicit fentanyl drugs in Western, but not Eastern regions where prescription-type opioid prevail; (ii) the environments of overdose deaths, where

Malignant hyperthermia crisis during scoliosis surgery in a pediatric cerebral palsy patient: a case of early recognition and successful intervention.

BACKGROUND: Malignant hyperthermia (MH) is a rare but life-threatening complication of general anesthesia, characterized by a hypermetabolic response that can lead to severe complications if not managed promptly. Patients with neuromuscular disorders, such as cerebral palsy and neuromuscular scoliosis, may have an increased risk of developing MH due to underlying genetic and physiological factors. Despite its rarity, early recognition and intervention are critical for patient survival. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of MH in a 13-year-old girl with cerebral palsy and neuromuscular scoli
