Folk remedies still in use: a case of soft palate and uvular oedema due to Ecbalium elaterium.

A case of soft palate and uvular oedema due to nasal administration of juice produced from the fruit of the plant Ecbalium elaterium, widely known as squirting cucumber, is presented. The patient recovered after administration of subcutaneous adrenaline and methylprednisolone. Cucurbitacins have been implicated in the past as toxic constituents of plants from the Cucurbitaceae family. Either an allergic reaction or a direct toxic effect of the constituents is responsible for the occurrence. A few similar cases have been reported, mostly in eastern Mediterranean countries.

Genome-wide identification of fatty acyl-CoA reductase gene family in cucumber and functional analysis of CsFAR3-like in cuticle wax formation and drought tolerance.

Fatty acyl-CoA reductases (FARs) catalyze the formation of primary alcohols, which are key components of plant cuticular wax. Although a few FAR members have been functionally characterized in Arabidopsis and several other species, their roles remain largely unexplored in Cucurbitaceae crops. Here, we identified five CsFAR genes in the cucumber genome, unevenly distributed across chromosomes 1, 4, and 6. Phylogenetic and collinearity analyses revealed that CsFARs share conserved evolutionary relationships with FARs from Arabidopsis thaliana, wheat, and other Cucurbitaceae species. Promoter cis

cmv1-Mediated Resistance to CMV in Melon Can Be Overcome by Mixed Infections with Potyviruses.

Resistance to cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) strain LS in melon is controlled by the gene cmv1, which restricts phloem entry. In nature, CMV is commonly found in mixed infections, particularly with potyviruses, where a synergistic effect is frequently produced. We have explored the possibility that this synergism could help CMV-LS to overcome cmv1-mediated resistance. We demonstrate that during mixed infection with a potyvirus, CMV-LS is able to overcome cmv1-controlled resistance and develop a systemic infection and that this ability does not depend on an increased accumulation of CMV-LS in mech

Spinosad resistance in field populations of melon fly, Zeugodacus cucurbitae (Coquillett), in Hawaii.

BACKGROUND: Control of Zeugodacus cucurbitae, a serious agricultural pest worldwide, often includes or is dependent on the use of spinosad-based insecticides. This is especially the case in Hawaii, where GF-120, a protein bait containing spinosad as the active ingredient, has been in use as a key integrated pest management (IPM) tool against this Tephritid for the last two decades. Here, we report on resistance to spinosad [resistance ratios (RRs) and median lethal concentration (LC50 )] in Hawaii's populations of Z. cucurbitae. RESULTS: High resistance was found in populations from three far

Biodegradation of crude petroleum and petroleum products by fungi isolated from two oil seeds (melon and soybean).

Crude petroleum oil degrading fungi were isolated from two oil seeds, Cucumeropsis mannii (melon) and Glycine max (soybean) seeds in the presence and absence of petroleum fumes. An assessment of the relative ability of each fungus to degrade crude petroleum, diesel and kerosene on minimum salt solution was done using change in optical density read on spectrophotometer. Twenty-one fungal species (14 genera) were isolated altogether during this experiment. These include eight species of Aspergillus; one species each of Botryodiplodia, Bipolaris, Cladosporium, Cunnighamella, Dreschlera, Fusarium,

Severe uvular edema and nasal mucosal necrosis due to Ecbalium elaterium (squirting cucumber): an allergic reaction or direct toxic effect?

Ecbalium elaterium or squirting cucumber is a plant growing in the Mediterranean region, belong to Cucurbitaceae family. Its juice has been used as an herbal medicine since ancient times because of its cathartic and anti-inflammatory effects. It has been reported to cause upper airway edema, especially after the administration of its undiluted form. It has generally been attributed to allergic reaction. In this case report we aimed to interrogate this anticipation by presenting a case of severe uvular edema and nasal mucosal necrosis after dripping undiluted Ecbalium elaterium juice that did n

Effect of Momordica charantia L. in the resistance to aminoglycosides in methicilin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.

In this study the ethanol extract (EEMC) of Momordica charantia L. (Cucurbitaceae) was tested for its modifying antibiotic activity against a MRSA strain. The growth of an MRSA (SA358) in the absence and presence of aminoglycosides was evaluated. A potentiating effect between this extract and all aminoglycosides was demonstrated. Similarly, the same effect was shown by chlorpromazine on kanamycin, gentamicin and neomycin, indicating the involvement of an efflux system in the resistance to these aminoglycosides. Extracts from M. charantia could be used as a source of plant-derived natural produ

Ancient DNA reveals early use of melons in China's Song dynasty.

Melon (Cucumis melo L.) domestication is thought to have occurred independently once in Northeast Africa and twice in India, but archaeobotanical seed remains point to a possible additional domestication event in China. Because Cucumis seeds are difficult to diagnose morphologically, genomic data from archaeological material are needed to evaluate these scenarios and reconstruct ancient melon traits. We sequenced two Song Dynasty (960-1279 CE) melon seeds from Shuomen Gugang (China), recovering 5.5× and 2.1× nuclear genome coverage. Nuclear and chloroplast analyses place both seeds within cult

Carotenoid sequestration protein FIBRILLIN participates in CmOR-regulated β-carotene accumulation in melon.

Chromoplasts are plant organelles with a unique ability to sequester and store massive carotenoids. Chromoplasts have been hypothesized to enable high levels of carotenoid accumulation due to enhanced sequestration ability or sequestration substructure formation. However, the regulators that control the substructure component accumulation and substructure formation in chromoplasts remain unknown. In melon (Cucumis melo) fruit, β-carotene accumulation in chromoplasts is governed by ORANGE (OR), a key regulator for carotenoid accumulation in chromoplasts. By using comparative proteomic analysis
