Women's wrist and elbow at work: analysis of acute injuries and cumulative trauma disorders to improve ergonomics in female-dominated activities.

The aim of this study is to analyse women's wrist and elbow acute work injuries together with cumulative trauma disorders, such as carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and epicondylitis. Five years records (2015-2019) on women's wrist/elbow acute work injuries and CTS/epicondilytis, from Italian National Compensation Authority, were collected and pooled all together as 'dis-ac' (disorders + acute) events. A statistical analysis was performed in comparing the different female-dominated work sectors. Results showed that hairdressing/laundry sector was associated with the highest risk for wrist acute wor

Uncertain reflective functioning, anxious attachment, and cumulative impact of early relational trauma as predictors of severity in borderline personality disorder.

BACKGROUND: The mentalization model of borderline personality disorder (BPD) utilizes a developmental psychopathology lens, emphasizing an unstable or reduced capacity to mentalize-stemming from early attachment disruptions and relational trauma-as the core feature of BPD. While the empirical evidence for the proposed intersections between mentalizing, attachment, and trauma and the development and manifestations of borderline personality is still limited, this knowledge is essential for developing effective assessments and interventions. AIM: To examine mentalizing, attachment, and early rel

Cross-sectional comparison of nerve conduction and vibration threshold testing: do screening tools for occupationally induced cumulative trauma disorders result in differing outcomes?

PURPOSE/METHOD: Early diagnosis of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is essential for its effective treatment and subsequent reduction or prevention of the personal and economic losses associated with it. This paper describes a comparison of vibration threshold testing (VTT) and nerve conduction testing (NCT) within the same subjects. RESULTS: Across age and diagnostic category there was little difference between VTT results and the NCT velocity measure in their ability to identify individuals with CTS. CONCLUSION: This is important because VTT is more easily administered and tolerated than NCT a

The cumulative impact of trauma, chronic illness, and COVID-19 stress on mental health in a case-control study of adults with psychotic disorders in Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has profoundly impacted the economic, psychological, and social well-being of people in Ethiopia. Pandemic-related fears can exacerbate anxiety and depression symptoms among those with pre-existing physical and mental health conditions as well as those with prior exposure to traumatic events. METHODS: We used data from the Ethiopia NeuroGAP-Psychosis study (898 cases and 941 controls with and without a diagnosis of psychosis respectively, 66% male, mean age = 37 years). Data was collected between November 2021 and June 2022 during the COVID-19 pandemic from f

Cumulative trauma and other determinants of post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety and depression in medical students following the Great Anatolian earthquake in Turkey.

BACKGROUND: Following the 2023 Turkey earthquake, university students in the earthquake district were transferred to other universities and our university was one of those. In addition, the families of many of our students were living in the earthquake district, and they were with their families during the earthquake due to the semester. We created a trauma psychiatry policlinic to serve medical students and others affected by the disaster. To identify students affected and to provide support, we conducted a cross-sectional study on medical students two months after the earthquake. We aimed to

Cumulative childhood interpersonal trauma is associated with reduced cortical differentiation between threat and non-threat faces in posttraumatic stress disorder adults.

OBJECTIVE: Posttraumatic stress disorder and childhood trauma frequently co-occur. Both are associated with abnormal neural responses to salient emotion stimuli. As childhood trauma is a risk factor for posttraumatic stress disorder, differentiating between their neurophysiological effects is necessary to elucidate the neural pathways by which childhood trauma exposure contributes to increased posttraumatic stress disorder risks. METHODS: Face-specific N170 evoked response potentials for backward-masked (non-conscious) and conscious threat (fear, angry) and non-threat (happy) faces were measu

Patterns and predictors of employer risk-reduction activities (ERRAs) in response to a work-related upper extremity cumulative trauma disorder (UECTD): reports from workers' compensation claimants.

BACKGROUND: Despite being preventable, work-related upper extremity cumulative trauma disorders (UECTDs) remain problematic. This study is unique in its focus on predictors of employer risk-reduction activities (ERRAs) in response to a UECTD case. METHODS: Workers' compensation claimants (N = 537) completed a telephone survey about employer risk-reduction activities, workplace characteristics, safety programs, and physician recommendations for job modifications. RESULTS: Only 52% of respondents reported employer actions to investigate or reduce UECTD risk. Engineering and pace changes were p

Epidemiology of injuries connected with dance: a critical review on epidemiology.

The aim of this review was to identify all types of injuries connected to the gestures of dancers and understand the associated biomechanical patterns. This is the first step in the definition of a prevention program that lacks in this kind of athletic activity. A search of Medline/PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane database from 1990 to 2019 using the search terms ''dance and injuries'' and ''dance and injuries and epidemiology'' initially resulted in 601 citations. A total of 16 articles were eligible for a review. All health problems that lead to stop the activity of a dancer are classified a

A Practical Approach to the Evaluation of a Cyclist with Overuse Injury.

Cycling has grown in popularity over the past 20 to 30 years, serving as transportation, fitness, and sport. Cycling is unique for several reasons: it is a non-weight-bearing sport, nearly all of the motion is in the sagittal plane, and it is one of the only sports where an individual remains attached to a machine for a long duration. As such, the cycling athlete has unique needs compared with other endurance-based athletes. The complex biomechanical interaction of bicycle and rider requires a systematic process for assessment, which provides the framework for understanding, evaluating, and tr

Lateral epicondylitis: Current concepts.

BACKGROUND: Lateral epicondylitis, more commonly referred to as 'tennis elbow', is a common condition seen in general practice. It effects approximately 4-7 per 1000 individuals. Despite this, the aetiology and pathophysiology remain poorly understood. Often presenting as lateral elbow pain, the differential diagnosis includes entrapment syndromes, cervical radiculopathy, osseous pathology and inflammatory conditions. Though in 90% of cases the condition is self-limiting, persistent symptoms can be difficult to manage. OBJECTIVE: In this article, a review of recent English-language journal ar

Gymnast's Wrist (Distal Radial Physeal Stress Syndrome).

The distal radial physis is a common site for injury in gymnasts because of the significant amount of load applied during upper extremity weight-bearing. Wrist pain has been reported in up to 88% of gymnasts. The long-term consequences of overuse wrist injuries, such as distal radial physeal arrest, include degenerative conditions that often cause pain and functional limitations. In the more immediate stage of many overuse injuries, early diagnosis can promote quicker care and recovery and thus faster return to play. Less time lost to injury can be very important in maintaining an athlete's qu

Rowing: sport-specific concerns for the team physician.

Rowing injuries occur mostly from overuse and are seen primarily in the back, rib, knee, and forearm. Many of these have a specific cause owing to the mechanics of the rowing stroke, which are discussed, as are sport-specific treatment strategies. Also discussed are specific injuries sustained on the rowing machine, emergency issues, and special population concerns.

[Eccentric exercises in the treatment of overuse injuries of the musculoskeletal system].

Overuse injuries of the musculoskeletal system are a common problem in both general population and among athletes. Researches made in the last decade have shown that overuse injuries are mainly caused by degenerative changes and not inflammation, as was thought before. Although they can be present everywhere in musculoskeletal system, overuse injuries are most often seen on tendons. The main goal of this article is to refer to latest guidelines in the treatment of overuse injuries, with special attention to eccentric exercise treatment program for most common tendinopathies (patellar tendinopa

[Proposal and preliminary validation of a check-list for the assessment of occupational exposure to repetitive movements of the upper lims].

Over the last few years the Authors developed and implemented, a specific check-list for a "rapid" assessment of occupational exposure to repetitive movements and exertion of the upper limbs, after verifying the lack of such a tool which also had to be coherent with the latest data in the specialized literature. The check-list model and the relevant application procedures are presented and discussed. The check-list was applied by trained factory technicians in 46 different working tasks where the OCRA method previously proposed by the Authors was also applied by independent observers. Since 46

[RSI--repetitive strain injury. A questionable and harmful concept].

The hypothesis that repetitive movements and postures cause musculoskeletal injury is not supported by scientific data. The sensory and pain symptoms are better explained as of psychological and psychosocial nature, such as job dissatisfaction or disajustment, with financial gains objectives. The repetitive strain injury concept is iatrogenic and costly to society, and must be abandoned.

Focal dystonia and repetitive motion disorders.

It commonly is observed that focal hand dystonias, such as writer's cramp or musician's cramp, are associated with repetitive movements, although definitive proof of a causal relationship is lacking. These focal dystonias are often task specific, with involuntary muscle contractions occurring only when patients perform specific acts such as writing or playing a musical instrument. Physiologic studies show deficiencies in spinal reciprocal inhibition and abnormalities of central sensory processing and motor output that may be related to reduced cortical inhibition. Recent studies in primates su
