Serum samples from 14 patients with Legionella pneumonia were examined for the presence of cytokines. In spite of high levels of serum C-reactive protein in all patients during the acute phase in only four cases (one involving interleukin-1beta [IL-1beta], three involving IL-6, and none involving tumor necrosis factor alpha) was the concentration of cytokines more than 100 pg/ml. Th2 cytokines IL-4 and IL-10 were detected in only one patient each. In contrast, significant increases of serum gamma interferon (IFN-gamma) and IL-12 levels were observed during the acute phase in 6 and 11 cases, re

Bone resorption is regulated by various cytokines. In postmenopausal osteoporosis, bone loss due to estrogen deficiency is closely related to the production of bone-resorbing cytokine. Especially, the increased production of IL-1, IL-6 and TNF-α could induce the expression of RANKL in bone tissues to enhance osteoclastogenesis. Relationship between estrogen deficiency and various cytokines is important to clarify the pathogenesis of postmenopausal osteoporosis.

BACKGROUND: "Cytokine storm" has been used to implicate increased cytokine levels in the pathogenesis of serious clinical conditions. Similarities with Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronoavirus-2 (SARS CoV-2) and the 2012 Middle Eastern Respiratory Syndrome led early investigators to suspect a "cytokine storm" resulting in an unregulated inflammatory response associated with the significant morbidity and mortality induced by SARS CoV-2. The threshold of blood cytokines necessary to qualify as a "cytokine storm" has yet to be defined.
METHODS: A literature review was conducted to identify

UNLABELLED: The common basis of systemic inflammatory response to surgical trauma is the activation of cytokine cascade, accompanied by the release of soluble cytokine receptors. The main cytokine axis stimulates the release of acute phase proteins (APP) form liver, modulates metabolic pathways and hormonal responses. The aim of this study was to assess characteristic changes in levels of pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines in early post-op stages after a major intraabdominal surgery and to compare the results with dynamic changes in APP levels. The results will form a basis of evaluation of

BACKGROUND: Oral cyclosporine is effective in the treatment of recalcitrant psoriasis. However, the precise mechanism(s) are not fully understood. A possible mode of action may be via down-modulation of proinflammatory cytokines that are increased in psoriatic lesions.
OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to monitor the effects of cyclosporine treatment on the expression of cytokines, cytokine receptors, and other markers of inflammation in psoriatic skin.
METHODS: Ten patients with recalcitrant psoriasis were treated with cyclosporine. The in vivo effects of cyclosporine on cytokines and thei

Periodontal disease, including gingivitis and periodontitis, is a chronic inflammatory condition that leads to the destruction of the supporting structures of teeth. The disease is characterized by a complex immune response, where cytokines play a central role in regulating both inflammation and tissue breakdown. Cytokines are small signaling proteins that mediate communication between immune cells, driving the progression of periodontal diseases by activating immune cells, promoting osteoclast differentiation, and stimulating the production of matrix metalloproteinases. This leads to the degr

Periodontitis is a common inflammatory periodontal disease affecting a wide range of population all over the world. The causing bacteria releases chemicals which activate the innate immune system to release proinflammatory cytokines contributing to more progression. This activates the acquired immune system leading to more progression of periodontitis. As the immune response goes on, released cytokines and chemokines can damage the periodontal ligaments, gingiva, and alveolar bone. There are many types of cytokines and chemokines in periodontitis. Cytokines are peptide mediators who are respons

This special issue on 'Cytokines in Liver Diseases' was inspired by many talks and presentations on liver cancer during the 2nd Aegean Conference on Cytokine Signaling in Cancer (ACCSC) held at Heraklion, Crete, Greece on May 30-June 04, 2017 (Cytokine 2018, 108: 225-231). The liver is the biggest blood filtration and detoxification unit, and is a vital metabolic organ. Being constantly exposed to potentially harmful dietary chemicals, drugs, alcohol abuse and pathogens, the liver displays an extraordinary capacity to repair tissue damage and to regenerate. Moreover, only a healthy liver can p

Among the multiple cardiac manifestations occurring in HIV-infected patients, cardiomyopathy is one of the most challenging. Its incidence has only slightly decreased since the introduction of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). Also, its pathogenesis remains relatively unclear. Although several studies demonstrated the presence of HIV genome in the heart of patients, more recent developments found that viral infection plays an indirect role only, as well as they recognized the contribution of proinflammatory cytokines in the progression of the disease. Experimental studies on animal

Cytokines are peripherally and centrally produced proteins that regulate immune and immunological responses. They also have neurochemical, neuroendocrine and behavioural effects similar to those seen in patients with depression. A review of the literature reveals several cytokines, including IL-1beta, IL-2, IL-6 and IFN, have been shown to be elevated in plasma of working-age adults with depression and dysthymia. A more detailed review of the literature also reveals similar associations between cytokines and late-life depression, with IL-1beta, IL-6 and TNF-alpha all being reported to be eleva

The aim of this study was to show the presence of an imbalance between pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory mediators in patients affected by acute coronary syndromes (ACS). We evaluated the production in cultured and stimulated lymphomonocytes of interferon (IFN)gamma and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)alpha, which are well known to possess pro-inflammatory effects, and of interleukin (IL)10, which has been shown to have a protective anti-inflammatory activity, in two groups of 30 patients affected by acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and unstable angina (UA), compared with two equivalent group

Mycoplasma pneumoniae (M. pneumoniae) is one of the smallest free-living bacteria known. Along with other unique characteristics of this genus, it lacks the typical peptidoglycan cell wall of most eubacteria. Best known for causing tracheobronchitis and atypical pneumonia in humans, this pathogen also causes a number of extrapulmonary syndromes such as meningitis/encephalitis and arthritis. Recent studies also suggest that infection may be associated with chronic conditions such as asthma. Although the mechanisms of M. pneumoniae pathogenesis remain to be elucidated, one important component of

Infectious disease remains an ever-growing health concern worldwide due to increasing antibiotic-resistant microbial strains, immune-compromised populations, international traffic and globalisation, and bioterrorism. There exists an urgent need to develop novel prophylactic and therapeutic strategies. In addition to classic antibiotic therapeutics, immune-modulatory molecules such as cytokines or their inhibitors represent a promising form of antimicrobial therapeutics or immune adjuvant used for the purpose of vaccination. These molecules, in the form of either recombinant protein or transgen

The designation of atherosclerosis as a chronic inflammatory process represents an interesting paradigmatic shift for cardiologists. The plasma concentrations of interleukin-6 and its hepatic byproduct, C-reactive protein, may reflect the intensity of occult plaque inflammation and the vulnerability to rupture. Monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 and interleukin-8 play a crucial role in initiating atherosclerosis by recruiting monocytes/macrophages to the vessel wall, which promotes atherosclerotic lesions and plaque vulnerability. In addition, circulating levels of these proinflammatory cytoki

PROBLEM: Immunological mechanisms induced by T cells may play an important role in preimplantation embryo development, in implantation process and in the phenomenon of fetal allograft tolerance.
METHODS: We review existing data on the role of T cells in pregnancy.
RESULTS: The production of LIF, interleukin (IL)-4, IL-10 and M-CSF by the decidual T cells may contribute to the maintenance of pregnancy. T cells are not only confined to the uterus. T cells are also present in cumulus oophorus and are able to produce LIF and IL-4.
CONCLUSIONS: These findings may provide an initial cue in favor

Cytokines are small proteins that serve as chemical messengers between cells, regulating cell growth and differentiation, tissue repair and remodeling, and many aspects of the immune response. Cytokines are instrumental in determining the nature, magnitude, and duration of inflammatory reactions and, as such, represent ideal targets for interfering with pathogenic processes. In OCA and PMR, cytokines are encountered in two locations, the inflammatory infiltrates accumulating in the arterial wall and in the circulation. IL-6, a cytokine involved in stimulating acute-phase responses, is located

The cause of mucosal injury in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is not clear but likely involves infectious agents or other toxins followed by an abnormal immune response in genetically susceptible individuals. The inflammatory cytokines appear to play a key role in both the susceptibility of some individuals and the tissue damage that accompanies IBD. The generation of transgenic and gene-targeted (knockout) animals has provided invaluable information regarding the cytokines and cellular immune effectors that are important in IBD. Information from these and other preclinical animal models, su
