Simultaneous hepatic and portal vein ligation induces rapid liver hypertrophy: A study in pigs.

BACKGROUND: Liver hypertrophy induced by partial portal vein occlusion (PVL) is accelerated by adding simultaneous parenchymal transection ("ALPPS procedure"). This preclinical experimental study in pigs tests the hypothesis that simultaneous ligation of portal and hepatic veins of the liver also accelerates regeneration by abrogation of porto-portal collaterals without need for operative transection. METHODS: A pig model of portal vein occlusion was compared with the novel model of simultaneous portal and hepatic vein occlusion, where major hepatic veins draining the portal vein-deprived lob

The socioeconomic returns to citizenship: A randomized controlled trial.

Based on observational studies, conventional wisdom suggests that citizenship carries economic benefits. We leverage a randomized experiment from New York where low-income registrants with permanent residency who wanted to become citizens entered a lottery to receive fee vouchers to naturalize. Voucher recipients were about 36 p.p. more likely to naturalize. Yet, we find no discernible effects of access to citizenship on multiple economic outcomes, including income, credit scores, access to credit, financial distress, and employment. Leveraging a multidimensional immigrant integration index, w

Dialysis Research at Crossroads of Immigration Policy.

Undocumented immigrants experience profound disparities in access to life-sustaining kidney dialysis care due to exclusion from federal insurance programs. In most states, these individuals receive dialysis only under emergency conditions, a practice associated with higher mortality, increased hospitalizations, and significant psychosocial burden compared to scheduled outpatient dialysis. Immigration policy volatility further complicates care delivery and introduces unique challenges for clinical research involving this population. We examine the intersection of immigration policy, dialysis ac

Health Care for Immigrant Children: Discussing Birth Country During Pediatric Appointments.

Information about a child's country of birth (also called nativity) is highly relevant to pediatric care, as it informs the recommendations pediatricians will make regarding screening for serious conditions such as elevated blood lead levels, viral hepatitis, and tuberculosis. However, pediatricians may be uncertain how to respectfully inquire about a child's birth country. These uncertainties have been amplified in the current US political climate in which many immigrant families have heightened fear of detention and deportation. We suggest pediatricians ask about nativity when it shapes heal

From Viruses to Genes to Cells.

I always loved biology and to do experiments. This passion and a great deal of good fortune and serendipity landed me in the field of retrovirology at the time when it opened to experimental analysis. I became involved in viral replication, genetics, and viral oncogenes. In more recent years, I have applied what I learned in tumor virology to human cancer. The early years of my personal life were marked by displacements and migration: deportation into East Germany, escape to the West, and emigration to the United States. As a young man I faced heartbreaking personal tragedies but attained a pe

[Humanities as a means of survival: the testimony of a Siberian prisoner of war in the First World War].

This article looks into the autobiography of the Croatian chemist and pharmacognosist Antun Vrgoč (1881-1949) entitled My Memories of the World War 1914-1920 and published in Zagreb in 1937. The author was captured in October 1914 and deported to Siberia, where he remained prisoner of war until 1920. Since there are few memoirs describing the life of Siberian prisoners during the First World War, this work is a precious testimony about the attitude towards the prisoners of war, human relations, and the survival of an AustroHungarian army officer. The book shows a striking lack of civilian or m

Folding paper swans, modeling lives: the ritual of Filipina eldercare in Israel.

This article examines the practices of folding paper swans by Filipina migrants employed as live-in caregivers for elderly, dying patients in Israel. These practices create a microsystem model of adjustment through precise, small-scale, and repetitive movements. This microsystem synchronizes a tripartite process: the swan's process of construction, the patient's process of decay, and the caregiver's process of self-creation. In the short term, the microsystem is sustained, but in the long term, the microsystem contains within it the seeds of its own self-destruction, as the patient eventually

Associated Radiofrequency Ablation and Portal Vein Ligation for Staged Hepatectomy Compared to Portal Vein Ligation Induces Prolonged and Enhanced Liver Regenerative Response.

INTRODUCTION: Several techniques have been designed to increase the size of the future liver remnant (FLR) prior to liver resection. This experimental study in pigs builds on our previous rat study, in which we demonstrated that portal vein ligation (PVL) combined with radiofrequency ablation - termed associated radiofrequency ablation and portal vein ligation for staged hepatectomy (ARAPS) - induces accelerated FLR growth comparable to the ALPPS procedure. METHODS: Eighteen female pigs were randomly assigned to PVL, ARAPS, or controls. On postoperative day (POD) 0, blood samples were collect

Trophoblastic remodeling in normal and preeclamptic pregnancies: implication of cytokines.

OBJECTIVE: To summarize the recent knowledge on the implications of placenta and cytokines in normal and preeclamptic pregnancies. DATA SOURCES: A literature search was conducted of applicable articles related to interactions between trophoblast and cytokines in generating preeclampsia. CONCLUSIONS: The initiating event in preeclampsia has been postulated to be the reduced uteroplacental perfusion as a result of abnormal extravillous cytotrophoblast invasion and remodeling of the uterine spiral arteries. Focal ischemia and hypoxia, deportation of hypoxemic trophoblast cells and abnormal expr

Excessive force during removal of immigration detainees.

Use of force against immigration detainees during attempts to expel them from the UK must be limited to that which is strictly necessary and proportionate under the circumstances, using accepted methods of restraint designed to minimise injury risk to all concerned. Fourteen cases are reported after failed removal attempts, where there were allegations that excessive force had been employed. Collective analysis of the 14 cases reveals a misuse of handcuffs in 11 cases with resulting nerve injury in 4 cases, the use of inappropriate and unsafe methods of force, such as blows to the head and com

Self-Care in an Interprofessional Setting Providing Services to Detained Immigrants with Serious Mental Health Conditions.

The authors are social workers and lawyers in an interprofessional setting providing legal and social services to detained immigrants in deportation proceedings who have serious mental health conditions. Drawing on direct experience working in the setting, as well as survey responses and feedback from other involved providers, the authors (a) identify barriers to self-care for social workers and lawyers that prevent them from effectively addressing the effects of secondary trauma; (b) propose a relationship-centered framework that, as an alternative to individualized practices of self-care, se

The illness experience of an undocumented immigrant in the USA.

Approximately 11 million people living and working in the USA do so without documentation. This group represents a disenfranchised minority with adverse experiences and unique comorbidities that faces significant obstacles to receiving healthcare, including fear of deportation, language barriers, financial barriers and difficulty navigating an inconsistent and fragmented system. Healthcare is therefore often sought once symptoms have become critical, which can lead to more severe disease processes and multiple new diagnoses at presentation even in previously healthy patients. Here we present t

Left Behind: Addressing the Impact of Family Separation Due to Immigration Policies on the Suffering of Patients with Advanced Cancer.

BACKGROUND: Family separation due to immigration policies may act as a powerful social determinant of psychological suffering in patients with advanced cancer. CASE DESCRIPTION: Two patients are described. Case 1: A late teenage male with advanced cancer is unable to receive maternal support due to border denial, navigating severe pain and isolation with limited English proficiency and access to care. Case 2: A woman with advanced cancer whose husband and primary caregiver was deported, leaving her solely responsible for childcare, finances, and decision-making amid grief and institutional ba

A literature review of the psychological status of asylum-seeking children: implications for nursing practice.

Europe is in the midst of a large-scale migration crisis, which has implications for healthcare provision for asylum-seeking children and families. The authors set out to identify the psychological status of asylum-seeking children and highlight their needs. A search of three electronic databases was carried out, resulting in 15 studies. Data show that asylum-seeking children appear to experience many mental health difficulties, including post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, self-harm, sleep disturbance and behavioural difficulties. The daily living situation includes a range of psychol

State and Local Policies as a Structural and Modifiable Determinant of HIV Vulnerability Among Latino Migrants in the United States.

We explore how state and local policies in labor, health, education, language, community and neighborhood environments, deportation, and state-authorized identification can reduce or exacerbate HIV vulnerability among Latino migrants in the United States. We reviewed literature on Latino migrants and HIV risk, on the structural-environmental contexts experienced by Latino migrants, and on the many domains in which policies influence those contexts. To illustrate the pathways through which policies across multiple sectors are relevant to HIV vulnerability, we describe how policies shape 2 media

The psychosocial toll of Dublin III on asylum seekers in the Netherlands.

The Dublin III Regulation determines which EU Member State is responsible for examining asylum claims, but its implementation carries significant consequences for those subjected to it. This study examines how Dublin III, as implemented in the Netherlands, affects asylum seekers' psychosocial wellbeing using Silove's Adaptation and Development after Persecution and Trauma (ADAPT) model. Based on multi-method qualitative fieldwork, including interviews (n = 6), a focus group discussion (n = 11), expert interviews (n = 10), and participant observation between 2023 and 2025, this research traces

ACOG Committee Statement No. 25: Advocating for Safe and Equitable Obstetric and Gynecologic Care for Immigrants.

Immigrants face challenges in navigating complex policies that govern access to health care, shelter, food, and clean water, resulting in profound effects on health care outcomes, including increased risk of preterm births and decreased access to preventive health services. These disparities are further exacerbated when immigration policies result in mass detention, incarceration, and deportation, leading to profound trauma among undocumented immigrants and their communities. Obstetrician-gynecologists and other reproductive health care professionals should be prepared to practice immigration-

Syncytiotrophoblast stress in early onset preeclampsia: The issues perpetuating the syndrome.

Preeclampsia is a pregnancy-specific syndrome characterized by a sudden increase in blood pressure accompanied by proteinuria and/or maternal multi-system damage associated to poor fetal outcome. In early-onset preeclampsia, utero-placental perfusion is altered, causing constant and progressive damage to the syncytiotrophoblast, generating syncytiotrophoblast stress. The latter leads to the detachment and release of syncytiotrophoblast fragments, anti-angiogenic factors and pro-inflammatory molecules into maternal circulation, resulting in the emergence and persistence of the characteristic sy

[Sanitary Conditions in the Ghetto of Nyíregyháza, and the Temporary Jewish Hospital].

In April 1944 a ghetto was organized in the center of the town Nyíregyháza (East-Hungary). The ghetto proved to be 17 580 people’s temporary residence for a whole month. The major problem was to ensure hygienic circumstances and prevent epidemics in the overcrowded area. A temporary hospital worked in the orthodox synagogue with a personnel consisting of 6 Jewish pharmacist and 39 doctors. The hospital functioned 35 days visited by daily ca. 100 people. During the period 254 patients were recorded, their average age was 58 years and they mostly suffered in chronic illnesses. The hospital was r
