Exploring bioactive compounds in functional foods of the Mediterranean diet.

Functional foods are rich in bioactive compounds that promote health. The Mediterranean diet (MD), characterised by a high intake of plant-based foods, is associated with reduced risk of metabolic disorders. This study investigated Lebanese za'atar and Italian extra virgin olive oil (EVOO), two representative MD functional foods, to evaluate their phytochemical composition and biological activities. The aqueous za'atar extract (ZE) and hydro-methanolic EVOO extract (EvOE) were characterised and assessed for antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. EvOE showed higher total phenols (259 ± 1

Impact of a Mediterranean diet on prevention and management of urologic diseases.

Compared to a Western diet, the Mediterranean diet moves away from red meat and processed foods. Universally regarded as a healthier dietary alternative, the Mediterranean diet has garnered scientific endorsement for its ability to confer an array of compelling benefits. These health benefits encompass not only a lowered incidence of Type 2 diabetes with a reduction in obesity, but also a robust protective effect on cardiovascular health. Extensive literature exists to corroborate these health benefits; however, the impact of a Mediterranean diet on urologic diseases, specifically sexual dysfu

Autoimmune Thyroid Disorders: The Mediterranean Diet as a Protective Choice.

Autoimmune thyroid diseases are on the rise worldwide, and such a rapid increase is mainly driven by environmental factors related to changed lifestyles in "modern" societies. In this context, diet seems to play a crucial role. An unhealthy high-energy diet, rich in animal fat and proteins, salt and refined sugars (the so-called "Western diet") negatively influences the risk of autoimmunity by altering the immune balance and the gut microbiota composition, enhancing oxidative stress and promoting inflammation. In contrast, the Mediterranean diet represents a unique model of healthy eating, cha

The Mediterranean Diet, a Rich Source of Angiopreventive Compounds in Cancer.

Diet-based chemoprevention of cancer has emerged as an interesting approach to evade the disease or even target its early phases, reducing its incidence or slowing down tumor progression. In its basis in the essential role of angiogenesis for tumor growth and metastasis, angioprevention proposes the use of inhibitors of angiogenesis in cancer prevention. The anti-angiogenic potential exhibited by many natural compounds contained in many Mediterranean diet constituents makes this dietary pattern especially interesting as a source of chemopreventive agents, defined within the angioprevention str

Adherence to Mediterranean diet and subjective cognitive function in men.

Benefits of a Mediterranean diet for cognition have been suggested, but epidemiologic studies have been relatively small and of limited duration. To prospectively assess the association between long-term adherence to a Mediterranean dietary pattern and self-reported subjective cognitive function (SCF). Prospective observational study. The Health Professionals' Follow-up Study, a prospective cohort of 51,529 men, 40-75 years of age when enrolled in 1986, of whom 27,842 were included in the primary analysis. What Are the Effects of a Mediterranean Diet on Allergies and Asthma in Children?

This review updates the relationship between the adherence to Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) assessed by questionnaire and asthma, allergic rhinitis, or atopic eczema in childhood. It deals with the effect of MedDiet in children on asthma/wheeze, allergic rhinitis, and atopic dermatitis/eczema, and also with the effect of MedDiet consumption by the mother during pregnancy on the inception of asthma/wheeze and allergic diseases in the offspring. Adherence to MedDiet by children themselves seems to have a protective effect on asthma/wheezing symptoms after adjustment for confounders, although the

Mediterranean diet and brain structure in a multiethnic elderly cohort.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether higher adherence to a Mediterranean-type diet (MeDi) is related with larger MRI-measured brain volume or cortical thickness. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, high-resolution structural MRI was collected on 674 elderly (mean age 80.1 years) adults without dementia who participated in a community-based, multiethnic cohort. Dietary information was collected via a food frequency questionnaire. Total brain volume (TBV), total gray matter volume (TGMV), total white matter volume (TWMV), mean cortical thickness (mCT), and regional volume or CT were derived from

The role of a Mediterranean diet on the risk of oral and pharyngeal cancer.

BACKGROUND: The Mediterranean diet has a beneficial role on various neoplasms, but data are scanty on oral cavity and pharyngeal (OCP) cancer. METHODS: We analysed data from a case-control study carried out between 1997 and 2009 in Italy and Switzerland, including 768 incident, histologically confirmed OCP cancer cases and 2078 hospital controls. Adherence to the Mediterranean diet was measured using the Mediterranean Diet Score (MDS) based on the major characteristics of the Mediterranean diet, and two other scores, the Mediterranean Dietary Pattern Adherence Index (MDP) and the Mediterranea

Association between adherence to the Mediterranean diet and oxidative stress.

BACKGROUND: The cardioprotective property of the Mediterranean diet has been attributed to its antioxidant capacity, but direct investigation of this mechanism has been limited. OBJECTIVE: We examined the association between the Mediterranean diet and an established plasma marker of oxidative stress, the ratio of reduced to oxidized glutathione (GSH/GSSG), in a well-controlled study of twins. DESIGN: We administered the Willett food-frequency questionnaire to 138 monozygotic and dizygotic twin pairs and to 21 unpaired twins and derived a score measuring adherence to the Mediterranean diet. Mediterranean diet adherence and endometriosis symptoms: implications for nutritional management.

BACKGROUND: Endometriosis is a chronic inflammatory disease significantly impairing quality of life (QoL). While the Mediterranean diet (MD) may modulate inflammation, evidence regarding its relationship with symptom burden is limited. This study aimed to examine the association between MD adherence, symptomatology, and QoL in women with endometriosis. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 254 women with endometriosis recruited through Spanish patient associations completed the 14-item Mediterranean Diet Adherence Screener (MEDAS) and the Endometriosis Health Profile-30 (EHP-30). Mediterranean Diet for Cardiovascular Risk Reduction in Chronic Kidney Disease.

The Mediterranean diet is a plant-based healthy diet similar to the vegetarian and the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension diets. Unlike vegetarian and Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension diets, the Mediterranean diet encourages a lifestyle associated with physical activity, and social connections. In addition, the Mediterranean diet is not based on restriction of nutrients but does limit intake of processed foods. Prospective studies have confirmed that the Mediterranean diet confers primary and secondary cardiovascular disease prevention in the general population. The benefits of the

Observational Cross-Sectional Study on Mediterranean Diet and Sperm Parameters.

Infertility, affecting 15 to 25% of couples in the most developed countries, is recognized by the World Health Organization as a public health issue at a global level. Different causes are acknowledged to reduce fertility in both sexes. In particular, about 40-50% of cases recognize a male factor. Dietary habits and lifestyle are acknowledged to influence sperm quality and are therefore important modifiable factors in male reproductive health. Conditions such as overweight/obesity, impaired glucose metabolism and determinants of metabolic syndrome, together with unhealthy lifestyle behavior, i
