Parkinson's disease (PD) is an increasingly common neurodegenerative condition. The disease has a significant negative impact on quality of life, but a personalized management approach can help reduce disability. Pharmacotherapy with levodopa remains the cornerstone of treatment, and a gratifying and sustained response to this treatment is a supportive criterion that argues in favor of an underlying diagnosis of PD. Yet, in daily practice, it is not uncommon to encounter patients who appear to have true PD, but who nevertheless seem to lose the responsiveness to levodopa (secondary non-respond

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is accompanied by numerous metabolic derangements due to risk factors such as oxidative stress, chronic inflammation, and endothelial dysfunction. Insulin resistance (IR) has been reported as an independent risk factor for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in patients with CKD. As reported from previous studies, it has been shown that IR is also seen in mild-to-moderate stages of CKD. Hence, the present study aimed to study IR in nondiabetic CKD patients and correlated with different stages of CKD. A two-year cross-sectional study was conducted in 175 patients

BACKGROUND: While skin carcinomas are reported in chronic ulcers and in patients treated with hydroxyurea (HU) for myeloproliferative neoplasms, no skin carcinoma has been reported in patients with sickle cell disease (SCD), presenting chronic skin ulcers or treated with HU. The objective was to estimate the risk of cutaneous malignant transformation in SCD patients with prolonged leg ulcers or under HU therapy.
RESULTS: In this cross-sectional study, the cohort consisted of 1543 patients. In the first series, 29 patients presented a total of 53 ulcers lasting more than two years. The median

In plants, pathogen attack can induce an immune response known as systemic acquired resistance that protects against a broad spectrum of pathogens. In the search for safer agrochemicals, silica nanoparticles (SiO2 NPs; food additive E551) have recently been proposed as a new tool. However, initial results are controversial, and the molecular mechanisms of SiO2 NP-induced disease resistance are unknown. Here we show that SiO2 NPs, as well as soluble Si(OH)4, can induce systemic acquired resistance in a dose-dependent manner, which involves the defence hormone salicylic acid. Nanoparticle uptake

Obesity and its major comorbidities, including type 2 diabetes mellitus, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), obesity cardiomyopathy, and certain cancers, have caused life expectancy in the United States to decline in recent years. Obesity is the increased accumulation of triglycerides (TG), which are synthesized from glycerol and long-chain fatty acids (LCFA) throughout the body. LCFA enter adipocytes, hepatocytes, and cardiomyocytes via specific, facilitated transport processes. Metabolism of increased cellular TG content in obesity may lead to comorbidities such as NAFLD and cardiomyop

Invasive Salmonella infections (typhoidal and non-typhoidal) cause a huge burden of illness estimated at nearly 3.4 million cases and over 600,000 deaths annually especially in resource-limited settings. Invasive non-typhoidal Salmonella (iNTS) infections are particularly important in immunosuppressed populations especially in sub-Saharan Africa, causing a mortality of 20-30% in vulnerable children below 5 years of age. In these settings, where routine surveillance for antimicrobial resistance is rare or non-existent, reports of 50-75% multidrug resistance (MDR) in NTS are common, including st

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown that treatment with ergocalciferol in patients with CKD stage 3 + 4 is not effective with less than 33% of patients achieving a 25-OH vitamin D target of >30 ng/ml. The aim of this study was to test the response to cholecalciferol in CKD. We attempted to replete 25-OH vitamin D to a target level of 40-60 ng/ml using the response to treatment and PTH suppression as an outcome measure.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study identified patients (Stages 2-5 and Transplant) from 2001-2010 who registered at the Chronic Kidney Disease Clinic. Patients receiv

With the widespread use of long-term fluconazole prophylaxis and suppressive treatment, the potential development of fluconazole resistance poses a threat to the management of cryptococcal disease. Interpretive breakpoints for the in vitro antifungal susceptibility testing of C. neoformans have not been established and it is unclear whether the fluconazole minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) is clinically relevant. To gain insight into the management of patients with cryptococcosis who fail fluconazole therapy, we conducted a PubMed literature search for cases of fluconazole-resistant crypt

Plants are under constant threat of infection by pathogens armed with a diverse array of effector molecules to colonize their host. Plants have, in turn, evolved sophisticated detection and response systems that decipher pathogen signals and induce appropriate defenses. Genetic analysis of plant mutants impaired in mounting a resistance response to invading pathogens has uncovered a number of distinct, but interconnecting, signaling networks that are under both positive and negative control. These pathways operate, at least partly, through the action of small signaling molecules such as salicy

Exciting advances have been made during the past year: isolating mutants affecting plant disease resistance, cloning genes involved in the regulation of various defense responses, and characterizing novel defense signaling pathways. Recent studies have demonstrated that jasmonic acid and ethylene are important for the induction of nonspecific disease resistance through signaling pathways that are distinct from the classical systemic acquired resistance response pathway regulated by salicylic acid.

In order to verify the relationship between insulin resistance and hyperandrogenism in Polycystic ovary disease (PCOD), circulating levels of insulin in response to oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) were assessed in 23 PCOD patients and 10 matched control subjects without obesity, acanthosis nigricans and impaired glucose tolerance. In PCOD patients serum total testosterone (T), dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA-S), LH and LH/FSH ratio were significantly higher than in control subjects; whereas urinary 17-ketosteroids (17-KS) and glycemic response to OGTT were not different. PCOD patients

The aquaculture industry has developed rapidly in recent years, and in China Crayfish Procambarus clarkii represent an important aquaculture fishery. However, bacterial and viral diseases are becoming an increasingly serious threat, causing considerable economic losses. Farmers use a large number of drugs and chemicals to destroy pathogenic microorganisms and to purify aquaculture water. The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of such drugs on crayfish immune systems. Five of the most commonly used fishery drugs and water treatment chemicals were analyzed: norfloxacin, calcium hypo

UNLABELLED: Streptococcus pneumoniae- the pneumococcus- affects children and adults worldwide. Invasive pneumococcal disease, including pneumonia, meningitis and bacteraemia, has been linked annually to the deaths of millions of children. The pneumococcus is also a significant contributor to mucosal infections such as acute otitis media and sinusitis. Though pneumococcal infections can occur at any age, persons at greatest risk include children younger than 2 years of age and adults aged 65 years or more. Rates of pneumococcal disease and the prevalence of pneumococcal serotypes vary by geogra

Benzothiadiazole (BTH) is a novel chemical activator of disease resistance in tobacco, wheat and other important agricultural plants. In this report, it is shown that BTH works by activating SAR in Arabidopsis thaliana. BTH-treated plants were resistant to infection by turnip crinkle virus, Pseudomonas syringae pv 'tomato' DC3000 and Peronospora parasitica. Chemical treatment induced accumulation of mRNAs from the SAR-associated genes, PR-1, PR-2 and PR-5. BTH treatment induced both PR-1 mRNA accumulation and resistance against P. parasitica in the ethylene response mutants, etr1 and ein2, and

Plant diseases remain a major constraint to crop productivity and global food security. Conventional breeding has long been used to develop resistant cultivars through the introgression of resistance traits from wild relatives and the selection of favorable phenotypes. However, this process is often slow and limited by linkage drag, known genetic diversity, intrinsic genetic limitations, and the rapid evolution of pathogen populations. Molecular breeding strategies, including marker-assisted selection and genomic selection, have improved the precision of resistance breeding but still rely on e

Several studies have confirmed the association between insulin resistance (IR) surrogates and the risk of cardiovascular disease. This study aimed to investigate the correlation between 4 IR surrogates: triglyceride-glucose index (TyG), triglyceride-glucose index with waist circumference (TyG-WC), triglyceride-glucose index with body mass index (TyG-BMI), and triglycerides/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio, and the risk of gallstone disease. This retrospective cross-sectional study involved a total of 19,696 participants who were divided into gallstone and non-gallstone groups based o

Due to the high prevalence of Alzheimer's disease (AD) in adults with Down syndrome (DS), trisomy 21 is now considered a genetic form of AD (DSAD). A better understanding of factors that can prevent or delay AD is vital to improve outcomes for adults with DS. In this narrative review, we apply AD and cognitive aging research frameworks to study resistance and resilience in DSAD. Given the variability in the timing of pathology and symptoms, we discuss the evidence supporting the role of genetic, biological, socio-behavioral, lifestyle, and environmental factors in resistance and resilience to
