BACKGROUND: Deglutition-induced atrial fibrillation is a rare clinical entity with a reported prevalence of 0.6%. Laing distal myopathy is a rare autosomal dominant muscular dystrophy that is the result of mutations within the slow skeletal muscle fibre myosin heavy chain gene (MYH7). Atrial fibrillation has not been previously reported in patients with Laing distal myopathy. We describe the first reported case of deglutition triggered atrial fibrillation in a female with a history of Laing distal myopathy.
CASE SUMMARY: A 44-year-old female with a history of Laing distal myopathy diagnosed a

BACKGROUND: Mutations in Matrin 3 [MATR3], an RNA- and DNA-binding protein normally localized to the nucleus, have been linked to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and distal myopathies. In the present study, we have used transient transfection of cultured cell lines to examine the impact of different disease-causing mutations on the localization of Matrin 3 within cells.
RESULTS: Using CHO and human H4 neuroglioma cell models, we find that ALS/myopathy mutations do not produce profound changes in the localization of the protein. Although we did observe variable levels of Matrin 3 in the cy

We describe an inflammatory myopathy that was symmetrically restricted to both gastrocnemius muscles in a young man. Histopathological findings were typical for polymyositis, but there were neither signs of generalization nor muscle weakness and wasting. This condition was highly sensitive to steroids and has been kept in remission for more than a year using azathioprine. Our findings add another entity to the spectrum of spatially restricted inflammatory myopathies. Muscle Nerve 40: 309-312, 2009.

The successful management of 2 cases of rare myopathies, who underwent hemithyroidectomy, is here reported. Anaesthesia was induced with TPS and fentanyl, and maintained with isoflurane. Neuromuscular blockade was achieved by atracurium; neuromuscular monitoring by Neurostar-Medeleck was performed. This intraoperative monitoring allowed a quick recovery without complications.

Muscle biopsies from four patients were studied histochemically and electron-microscopically: they had myopathy of juvenile or early-adult onset, in which distal limb muscles were most severely affected but muscles supplied by cranial nerves were spared. Common histochemical findings included variation in fiber size, necrosis, phagocytosis, fiber splitting, central nuclei, endomysial fibrosis, and particularly rimmed vacuoles. Electron-microscopic examination revealed frequent autophagic vacuoles with numerous myeloid bodies. In addition, sarcoplasmic inclusion bodies with periodically laminat

INTRODUCTION: GNE myopathy is a rare autosomal recessive distal myopathy classically characterized by symmetrical distal muscle weakness with relative quadriceps sparing. However, phenotypic variability, including asymmetric onset, may obscure the diagnosis and mimic neuropathic disorders.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 27-year-old Bangladeshi man presented with a 2-year history of progressive distal weakness, initially involving the left lower limb and later affecting the contralateral limb and distal upper extremities. Neurological examination revealed asymmetric distal weakness with bilateral foot d

Distal myopathies comprise a clinically and genetically diverse group of muscle disorders characterized by initial involvement of the distal extremities. We describe siblings who developed progressive weakness in the ankle plantar flexors from adolescence to early adulthood. By their 50s, the lower legs exhibited severe fatty degeneration with pronounced involvement of the gastrocnemius and soleus. Genetic analysis identified a heterozygous p.L95F variant in KLHL9, previously associated with an early-onset autosomal dominant form of distal myopathy featuring tibialis anterior atrophy and senso

Classic phenotypes of plectinopathies include epidermolysis bullosa simplex and muscular dystrophy with proximal distribution, associated or not with skin blistering. However, in recent years, patients manifesting new muscular phenotypes including lower-limb distal weakness have been described. We aim to expand the phenotypic spectrum of plectinopathies by reporting a case presenting with a pure skeletal myopathy with predominant upper-limb distal weakness. We describe this distal myopathy phenotype providing comprehensive clinical, genetic, myopathological and radiological data. Genetic studi

Distal hereditary motor neuropathies (dHMNs), also named as distal spinal muscular atrophy, are a group of disorders that cause degeneration of motor nerves. Currently, only 15% to 32.5% of patients with dHMN have been genetically identified. The most common cause of dHMNs gene mutations is HSPB1 mutation. In HSPB1 mutation, which is also one of the myopathogens via satellite cell pathology, dHMNS may coexist with neuromuscular junction disorder, motor neuron disease, satellite cell dysfunction and therefore myopathic findings. No case of myopathy and myotonia with HSPB1 mutation has been repo

BACKGROUND: The expansion of GGC repeat in the 5' untranslated region of the NOTCH2NLC has been associated with various neurogenerative disorders of the central nervous system and, more recently, oculopharyngodistal myopathy. This study aimed to report patients with distal weakness with both neuropathic and myopathic features on electrophysiology and pathology who present GGC repeat expansions in the NOTCH2NLC.
METHODS: Whole-exome sequencing (WES) and long-read sequencing were implemented to identify the candidate genes. In addition, the available clinical data and the pathological changes a

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The aim of our study was to describe patients with the p.D12Y variant (previously reported as D11Y) in SOD1 showing heterogeneous clinicopathological features.
METHODS: We performed clinical, electrophysiological, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and muscle pathology studies in four SOD1 p.D12Y variant-positive patients.
RESULTS: The SOD1 p.D12Y clinical manifestations ranged from a benign phenotype characterized by distal distribution of muscular weakness and long survival to classic forms of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis with poor prognosis. Two patients with the di

Nemaline myopathy commonly presents with symmetrical proximal weakness. Here we report two cases of nemaline myopathy presenting with distal dominant involvement with prominent asymmetry. Case 1 was a 37-year-old man who recalled frequently falling down and had right calf atrophy since he was 3-years-old. He had right calf muscle atrophy and weakness and steppage gait; his cardiopulmonary function was normal. Case 2 was a 35-year-old man with right calf muscle atrophy and weakness since childhood. He had right dominant distal leg weakness and atrophy together with respiratory failure and start

In this report, we describe a kindred consisting of five affected males presenting with many of the well-recognized features of Aarskog-Scott syndrome. The diagnosis, which was confirmed by the identification of a novel nonsense mutation of FGD1, was associated with the presence of a symmetric distal arthropathy with electromyographic signs of myopathy. These features should be considered in the evaluation of future patients.

Investigators have speculated that the degenerative process in distal myopathy with rimmed vacuoles (DMRV) mainly involves the lysosomal system. To investigate possible protein abnormalities related to intracellular lysosomal proteolytic pathways in DMRV-affected muscles, we performed immunohistochemical analyses of certain proteins in muscle biopsy specimens obtained from patients with various neuromuscular diseases, including DMRV, muscular dystrophy, polymyositis, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and in normal human muscles specimens. Immunohistochemically, most muscle fibers in normal co

Five patients with inclusion body myositis (IBM), an acquired inflammatory myopathy, and five patients with Welander hereditary distal myopathy (WDM) were compared clinically and with neurophysiological and morphological techniques. Both diseases have a late insidious onset, but the course of IBM is more severe. IBM mainly affects proximal muscles in the lower extremities, while distal muscle groups are involved in both upper and lower extremities. In WDM there is always a strict distal muscle involvement. The neurophysiological characteristics of the two conditions include both myopathic and

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The diagnostic process for myofibrillar myopathies (MFM) and distal myopathies (DM) is particularly complex because of the large number of causative genes, the existence of still molecularly undefined disease entities, and the overlapping features between the 2 categories. This study aimed to characterize a large cohort of patients affected by MFM and DM and identify the most important diagnostic and prognostic aspects of these diseases.
METHODS: Patients with either a myopathological diagnosis of MFM or a clinical diagnosis of DM were included in this retrospective

Mutations in the DNAJB6 gene cause limb girdle muscular dystrophy D1 (LGMD D1) and distal myopathy with rimmed vacuoles. With the discovery of new mutations, the phenotypic spectrum of DNAJB6-related myopathy has been extended, making the diagnosis more complicated. In this study, we describe a female carrier of spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy (SBMA) diagnosed with DNAJB6-related distal myopathy. The c.292_294delGAT (p. Asp98del) mutation in the DNAJB6 gene and a 49 CAG repeat expansion in the androgen receptor (AR) gene were identified. According to the clinical manifestations of distal-do
