INTRODUCTION: Social determinants of health (SDOH) increasingly shape health care priorities, highlighting the intricate interplay of environment, behaviour, socioeconomics and health care access. The COVID-19 pandemic intensified disparities, particularly affecting racial/ethnic groups with bleeding disorders.
AIM: The pilot study aimed to identify key themes related to health equity, diversity, and inclusion as it relates to Black, indigenous people of colour (for example, Native Americans and Asian Pacific Islanders), and Hispanic/Latino people with bleeding disorders (PWBD) by interviewin

INTRODUCTION: Marginalised populations-such as racialised groups, low-income individuals, newcomers and those in rural areas-disproportionately experience severe diabetes-related complications, including diabetic foot ulcers, retinopathy and amputations, due to systemic inequities and limited access to care. Although community-based programmes address cultural and accessibility barriers, their isolation from mainstream healthcare systems leads to fragmented care and missed opportunities for early intervention.Artificial intelligence (AI)-powered technologies can enhance accessibility and perso

PURPOSE: There remains limited information on racial diversity amongst medical student bodies. Given the lack of demographic data collected for medical student admissions, we sought to understand the ethno-racial identity and capital of medical students across Canada.
METHOD: Our objectives were two-fold: (1) Collect demographic data about medical students across Canada and (2) Apply Bourdieu's theoretical framework of capital to the data. Adopting a pragmatist research paradigm, we collected data on Canadian medical students using an online survey administered to all medical students across

OBJECTIVES: Equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI), patient engagement and shared decision-making are important considerations throughout clinical trials, including the research ethics review stage. Meaningfully integrating these considerations can enhance the relevance and generalisability of trial results and reduce participation barriers among equity-deserving populations. Presently, it is unclear to what extent such guidance is provided at the ethics application stage for clinical trials. This study aimed to report the degree of guidance on EDI, patient engagement and shared decision-making

BACKGROUND: Policy research aims to provide evidence to inform government policy decisions about health and social care. Engaging and involving the public and patients in this work is widely recognised as essential. Research funders prioritise equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) in patient and public involvement and engagement (PPIE), but people who are most likely to experience poor outcomes are also those least likely to be involved in research. This paper describes our experience of setting out to understand how to overcome barriers to EDI in PPIE in the research carried out by the Nati

Learning climate greatly affects student achievement. This qualitative study aimed to understand community definitions of climate; share lived experiences of students, faculty, and staff; and define priority areas of improvement in the University of Washington School of Public Health (UWSPH). Between March-May 2019, 17 focus group discussions were conducted-stratified by role and self-identified race/ethnicity, gender and sexual orientation-among 28 faculty/staff and 36 students. Topics included: assessing the current climate, recounting experiences related to roles and identities, and recomme

BACKGROUND: Research teams increasingly rely on patient engagement-where patients are engaged as partners in knowledge production-to improve the quality and relevance of health research. An ongoing challenge is how best to compensate patient partners for their time and expertise, given diverse personal, financial, and institutional contexts. This study identifies common barriers and facilitators to patient partner compensation; examines how compensation practices actively shape who can participate in patient-oriented research, enabling or constraining equity, diversity, and inclusion within he

BACKGROUND: The National Hemophilia Foundation (NHF) conducted extensive all-stakeholder inherited bleeding disorder (BD) community consultations to inform a blueprint for future research. Sustaining and expanding the specialized and comprehensive Hemophilia Treatment Center care model, to better serve all people with inherited BDs (PWIBD), and increasing equitable access to optimal health emerged as top priorities.
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: NHF, with the American Thrombosis and Hemostasis Network (ATHN), convened multidisciplinary expert working groups (WG) to distill priority research in

BACKGROUND: There is an urgent need to increase diversity among scientific investigators in the HIV research field to be more reflective of communities highly affected by the HIV epidemic. Thus, it is critical to promote the inclusion and advancement of early-stage scholars from racial and ethnic groups underrepresented in HIV science and medicine.
METHODS: To widen the HIV research career pathway for early-stage scholars from underrepresented minority groups, the National Institutes of Health supported the development of the Centers for AIDS Research (CFAR) Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion P

BACKGROUND: Increasing representation in clinical trials is a priority for the National Cancer Institute and Children's Oncology Group (COG). Our survey of COG-affiliated institutions revealed that many sites have insufficient processes and resources to enroll children whose parents use languages other than English (LOE). We describe reported barriers and facilitators to enrolling children in clinical trials when parents use LOE and propose opportunities for improvement.
PROCEDURES: We sent a 20-item survey to COG-affiliated institutions. Five items allowed respondents to expand on replies to

INTRODUCTION: Social prescribing is increasingly promoted as an integrated care strategy that connects individuals to non-clinical community resources to improve health and well-being. Co-design is frequently recommended for developing social prescribing pathways that are acceptable, feasible and responsive to local needs. However, how co-design is operationalised in inclusive and equity-centred ways remains poorly understood. This narrative review synthesises health-related literature on co-design strategies that promote equity and foster inclusion in the development of social prescribing ini

This study evaluated the effect of increasing the critical value threshold for hyponatremia combined with systematic intervention on sodium regulation in patients undergoing myomectomy. A retrospective analysis was performed. Patients who underwent myomectomy and received conventional care between March 2014 and March 2019 (n=844) served as the reference group (threshold: 120 mmol/L), while those treated between March 2019 and March 2024 (n=1385) formed the observation group. In the observation group, the hyponatremia critical threshold was raised to 129 mmol/L, alongside targeted intervention

Scientific conferences are important because they elevate researchers, provide an opportunity to meet leaders and funders, and build new collaborations. Conferences are particularly important for people who are often marginalized within scientific research related to gender, sexual identity, national origin, lived experience, and race/ethnicity. Nevertheless, many researchers who inhabit these marginalized identities or who are from low-resource settings face barriers to meaningfully participate in such scientific activities. As individuals who represent vulnerable patient groups (e.g. people

Despite the global burden of dementia, research remains dominated by high-income, Western populations, limiting the generalizability and equity of findings. In this Perspective, we highlight the importance of diversity and inclusion in dementia research, not only in study participants but also in the researchers, study design, and funding priorities. We describe how the lack of representation creates knowledge gaps and delays progress in prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. We also present examples of initiatives that are working to change this, including the Alzheimer's Disease Data Initiati

Inclusive assessment is essential in higher education to ensure that all students, regardless of background, ability, or circumstance, have equitable opportunities to demonstrate their learning. In high-stakes disciplines such as pharmacology and other medical sciences, where assessment outcomes significantly influence academic progression and professional qualification, embedding inclusive practices is particularly important. Equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) have emerged as central principles in shaping contemporary educational approaches, especially in how we design and deliver assessm

In light of increasing legislation aimed at prohibiting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts at publicly funded universities in the United States, women-only leadership programs (WOLPs) have come under increasing pressure, which could undermine gender equity advancements, particularly in academic medicine. Women-only leadership programs have traditionally offered a unique advantage for women over mixed-gender leadership programs by fostering psychologically safe spaces to share experiences, teaching leadership competencies while using a gender equity lens in areas where it makes sens
