Cyanobacterial bioreporter of nitrate bioavailability in aquatic ecosystems.

The water eutrophication, resulting from the discharge of industrial and agricultural wastewater, leads to ecological degradation. However, to date, how to assess and manage the risks of water pollution, especially nitrogen pollution, remains a particularly noteworthy issue. Nitrate, the most important nitrogen compound, has become a bottleneck restricting total nitrogen management. The development of bioreporters monitoring nitrate pollution contributes to the estimation of water quality, especially the availability of nutrients. In this study, we obtained 9 bioreporters from 40 cyanobacteria

Estimating turbidity concentrations in highly dynamic rivers using Sentinel-2 imagery in Google Earth Engine: Case study of the Godavari River, India.

Turbidity is an essential biogeochemical parameter for water quality management because it shapes the physical landscape and regulates ecological systems. It varies spatially and temporally across large water bodies, but monitoring based on point-source field observations remains a difficult task in developing countries due to the need for logistics and costs. In this study, we present a novel semi-analytical approach for estimating turbidity from remote sensing reflectance ( R rs ) in moderate to highly turbid waters in the lower part of the Godavari River (i.e., locations near Rajahmundry).

An efficient method for monitoring small bird targets in wetland environments based on object detection.

Birds play an essential role in evaluating the health and biodiversity of wetland ecosystems. Due to the complex and diverse wetland environments and the typically small size of birds, existing technologies face issues of low detection accuracy and high miss rates. To address these challenges, this study proposes the RLCB-YOLO model, which is a framework for detecting wetland birds based on YOLOv8n. By combining receptive field attention and coordinate attention, the proposed convolutional modules solve the problem of attention weight sharing and enhance long-range information processing. Addi

Polonium-210 contamination in marine bivalves from tropical coastal waters of Vietnam: Implications for environmental biomonitoring and ecological risk assessment.

Radionuclide pollution in the marine environment is becoming a growing concern because of its potential risks to human health and marine ecosystems. This study analyzed 210Po activity in two organs of 16 ecologically and economically important bivalve mollusk species at the tropical coastal area in Lam Dong, Vietnam, to evaluate their suitability for environmental biomonitoring and to assess ecological and radiological risks. The 210Po activity concentrations varied widely among species and organs, from 7.15 ± 1.3 to 212 ± 16 Bq/kg ww (mean: 58.9 Bq/kg ww) for muscle tissue, and from 44.2 ± 4.

Full-Cycle Ecological Damage Assessment Framework for Sudden Water Pollution Accidents: Multi-Model Coupled Prediction and Three-Dimensional Quantitative Evaluation with a Case Study of Tailings Dam Breach.

Sudden tailings dam breaches trigger large-scale heavy metal compound pollution in coupled surface water-groundwater systems, requiring systematic full-cycle ecological damage quantification tools applicable to diverse contamination types. This study constructs an integrated full-cycle ecological damage assessment framework for sudden water pollution accidents, integrating three core modules: multi-model pollutant migration prediction, multi-scale aquatic biological damage diagnosis, and three-dimensional ecological-economic loss accounting. The framework adopts a modular design that can poten

Electroconductive hydrogel as an anode for the Arthrospira platensis based photobiofuel cell.

Photobiofuel cells (PBFC) as ecological and self-sustainable energy sources are essential in a variety of monitoring applications. To put this technology in practice there is a number cells aspects to be improved, and one of them is electrodes material. Biocompatibility, conductivity and large surface are between the most reliable properties of such materials. In this article, we report on the development of a laboratory photobiofuel cell with new electrode materials based on an electrically conductive hydrogel with poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS). Heavy Metal Pollution in River Sediments: Risk Assessment, Source Apportionment, and Remediation-A Review Focusing on Chinese River Basins.

River sediments act not only as important sinks for heavy metal pollution in watersheds, but also as potential secondary sources under changing environmental conditions. Heavy metals can enter river systems through industrial wastewater discharge, agricultural non-point runoff, urban stormwater and sewage inputs, mining and smelting activities, and atmospheric deposition. During adsorption onto suspended particles, sedimentation, and resuspension, metals such as Cd, Pb, Cr, Cu, Zn, Ni, As, and Hg progressively accumulate in sediments. Because heavy metals are persistent, non-degradable, and bi

MS. Ecological Risk Analysis for Benzalkonium Chloride, Benzethonium Chloride, and Chloroxylenol in US Disinfecting and Sanitizing Products.

Use of three topical antiseptic compounds-benzalkonium chloride (BAC), benzethonium chloride (BZT), and chloroxylenol (PCMX)-has recently increased because of the phaseout of other antimicrobial ingredients (such as triclosan) in soaps and other disinfecting and sanitizing products. Further, use of sanitizing products in general increased during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. We assessed the environmental safety of BAC, BZT, and PCMX based on best available environmental fate and effects data from the scientific literature and privately held sources. Microbiologically influenced corrosion in aquatic environments: a review of mechanisms, biofilms, and materials.

Microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) is a major cause of metal degradation in aquatic environments, accounting for a significant proportion of global economic losses. This review provides an integrated and updated overview of MIC in aquatic ecosystems, emphasizing the interactions between microorganisms, biofilms, metallic materials, and environmental conditions. Rather than considering microbial groups in isolation, this review highlights the role of biofilm-driven microenvironments in regulating electrochemical reactions at the metal-water interface. Particular attention is given to

Monitoring of Gait Parameters in Post-Stroke Individuals: A Feasibility Study Using RGB-D Sensors.

Stroke is one of the most significant causes of permanent functional impairment and severe motor disability. Hemiplegia or hemiparesis are common consequences of the acute event, which negatively impacts daily life and requires continuous rehabilitation treatments to favor partial or complete recovery and, consequently, to regain autonomy, independence, and safety in daily activities. Gait impairments are frequent in stroke survivors. The accurate assessment of gait anomalies is therefore crucial and a major focus of neurorehabilitation programs to prevent falls or injuries. This study aims to

Exposure to ecologically relevant estrogen levels do not influence morphology or immune parameters in hatchling American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis).

Human activity has increased concentrations of endocrine-disrupting contaminants (EDCs) in many ecological systems. Many EDCs are xenoestrogens, which imitate naturally derived estrogen like estradiol 17-β (E2). These pollutants can critically affect a broad range of biological functions, particularly in organisms inhabiting aquatic environments. E2 and associated receptors are involved in regulating innate immune responses, where documentation of exogenous E2 on immune parameters is important for understanding health consequences. In this study, we explore the impact of environmentally releva

Silver-Form-Driven Nanotoxicity Reveals Spirodela intermedia W. Koch as a Potential Bioindicator for Aquatic Systems.

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and silver sulfide nanoparticles (Ag2SNPs) are increasingly being used in diverse industries due to their unique physicochemical properties. However, their release into aquatic environments raises concerns regarding their potential ecological impact, making them an excellent model system for evaluating potential biomonitors. In this study, we evaluated and compared the phytotoxic effects of AgNPs and Ag2SNPs suspensions on the free-floating macrophyte Spirodela intermedia W. Koch, a species with broad distribution from Mexico to South America and promising potentia

Dynamics and control of Schistosoma haematobium transmission in Kenya: an overview of the Msambweni Project.

Ecologic modeling of Schistosoma transmission in endemic communities has suggested that antiparasite therapy targeted at the most heavily infected segment of the human population (i.e., school-age children) should have a significant impact on local parasite transmission. Our 1984-1991 experience with age-targeted therapy in the Msambweni area of Kenya has shown an overall decrease in area transmission within 1-2 years following initiation of annual treatment of school-age groups. Snail monitoring confirmed a continuing but variable reduction of vector infection rates. However, subgroup analysi

Potential distributions of Bacillus anthracis and Bacillus cereus biovar anthracis causing anthrax in Africa.

BACKGROUND: Bacillus cereus biovar anthracis (Bcbva) is an emergent bacterium closely related to Bacillus anthracis, the etiological agent of anthrax. The latter has a worldwide distribution and usually causes infectious disease in mammals associated with savanna ecosystems. Bcbva was identified in humid tropical forests of Côte d'Ivoire in 2001. Here, we characterize the potential geographic distributions of Bcbva in West Africa and B. anthracis in sub-Saharan Africa using an ecological niche modeling approach. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Georeferenced occurrence data for B. anthracis an

Quantifying the value of surveillance data for improving model predictions of lymphatic filariasis elimination.

BACKGROUND: Mathematical models are increasingly being used to evaluate strategies aiming to achieve the control or elimination of parasitic diseases. Recently, owing to growing realization that process-oriented models are useful for ecological forecasts only if the biological processes are well defined, attention has focused on data assimilation as a means to improve the predictive performance of these models. METHODOLOGY AND PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We report on the development of an analytical framework to quantify the relative values of various longitudinal infection surveillance data collecte

Fit for purpose? Evaluating benthic invertebrate DNA metabarcoding for ecological status class assessment in streams under the Water Framework Directive.

The ecological state of aquatic ecosystems is systematically monitored using various bioindicators in many countries worldwide. In the European Union, freshwater biomonitoring is the central component of the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD, 2000/60/EC) and currently based on morpho-taxonomic methods. DNA metabarcoding is a novel approach to assess the ecological state fast and efficiently based on organismal DNA signatures and thereby support and upscale biomonitoring. However, compliance of metabarcoding with existing morpho-taxonomic methods must be ensured prior to official implementation

Modelling the hydrological response of blue-green roofs: ECO-PRO model.

Green roofs are climate-adaptive measures able to address many urban challenges like heat islands, water scarcity, floodings, pollution and biodiversity loss. Recently, the "blue-green roof" variant has gained attention for its enhanced functionality, since, incorporating a high-capacity storage layer, they can retain significant amount of rainwater. This last can be gradually released, reducing stress on urban drainage during heavy storms, sustain passive irrigation and provide greywater for reuse. Modelling green infrastructures is essential for optimizing design and efficacy, and, in this c

Dengue vector dynamics (Aedes aegypti) influenced by climate and social factors in Ecuador: implications for targeted control.

BACKGROUND: Dengue fever, a mosquito-borne viral disease, is now the fastest spreading tropical disease globally. Previous studies indicate that climate and human behavior interact to influence dengue virus and vector (Aedes aegypti) population dynamics; however, the relative effects of these variables depends on local ecology and social context. We investigated the roles of climate and socio-ecological factors on Ae. aegypti population dynamics in Machala, a city in southern coastal Ecuador where dengue is hyper-endemic. Development and Validation of a Cross-Device Platform for Anhedonia Trend Visualization by Using Ecological Momentary Assessment and Moving Averages (Part I): Protocol for a Methodological Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Anhedonia is a core symptom of depressive disorders. Although group-level cutoff points for the Snaith-Hamilton Pleasure Scale (SHAPS) are established, real-time, individual-level monitoring remains limited. Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) enables high-frequency sampling, and simple moving averages (SMA; 7/14/30 days) offer an interpretable way to smooth daily signals and surface early-warning trends. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to develop and validate a cross-device platform that collects EMA-based SHAPS responses and visualizes SMA trends for individual anhedonia
