The chiral resolution of (+/-)-econazole, (+/-)-miconazole and (+/-)-sulconazole on the columns containing different cellulose derivatives namely Chiralcel OD, OJ, OB, OK, OC and OF in normal phase mode has been described. The mobile phase used was hexane-2-propanol-diethylamine (425:74:1, v/v/v). The flow rates of the mobile phase used were 0.50, 1.00 and 1.50 ml/min. The values of the separation factor (alpha) of the resolved enantiomers of econazole, miconazole and sulconazole on chiral phases were ranged from 1.07 to 2.50 while the values of resolution factor (R(s)) varied from 0.17 to 3.9

The in vitro activities of ACH-702 and other antimicrobials against 30 Nocardia brasiliensis isolates were tested. The MIC(50) (MIC for 50% of the strains tested) and MIC(90) values of ACH-702 were 0.125 and 0.5 microg/ml. The same values for econazole were 2 and 4 microg/ml. The MIC(50) and MIC(90) values of imipenem and meropenem were 64 and >64 microg/ml and 2 and 8 microg/ml, respectively; the addition of clavulanic acid to the carbapenems had no effect.

OBJECTIVES: To explore methods for accurate diagnosis and effective treatment of otomycosis.
METHODS: Using randomised stratification, eligible patients were split into a patient-applied medication group and a physician-applied medication group in order to compare the efficacy and recurrence rates of two treatment approaches.

A total of 61 patients with proven fungal infection of the skin or with erythrasma took part in a double-blind comparison of the efficacy, toleration and safety of tioconazole base 1% w/w and econazole nitrate 1% creams applied twice daily. Some patients had more than one site of infection and some were infected with more than one fungal/bacterial species. The mean duration of treatment in the tioconazole group of patients was 40 days (range: 12-68) and in the econazole group 38 days (range: 17-101). The in vitro activities of two new miconazole and econazole salts with the sulphosalicylic acid against 71 clinical isolates of dermatophytes were evaluated in comparison with those of miconazole, miconazole nitrate, econazole and econazole nitrate. Miconazole sulphosalicylate and econazole sulphosalicylate were equally effective in inhibiting the fungal growth compared with miconazole, econazole, and their nitrates.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the chemotherapeutic potential of econazole against latent tuberculosis. The activity of econazole and clotrimazole was tested against the latent bacilli (Mycobacterium tuberculosis H(37)Rv) developed by nutrient starvation under in vitro conditions and by drugs under in vivo conditions. Oculomycosis is a severe problem in most developing countries. Specific antifungal agents are often unavailable, and are expensive. The use of antiseptic agents was therefore explored. From our clinical trials of different available antifungal drugs for the cases of keratomycosis, we conclude that Econazole 1% ointment is a safe and effective antifungal agent having a wide range of antifungal activity. With rising incidence of mycotic ulcer particularly in rural population where facilities for laboratory diagnosis and drug sensitivity tests for antifungal drugs are lacking Econazole can be useful as a broad spectrum antifungal agent for the cases of keratomycosis and also could be used as a prophylactic in cases of traumatic corneal ulcer as those are particularly at risk.
