Mitigating social and economic sources of trauma: The need for universal basic income during the coronavirus pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic is projected to cause an economic shock larger than the global financial crisis of 2007-2008 and a recession as great as anything seen since the Great Depression in 1930s. The social and economic consequences of lockdowns and social distancing measures, such as unemployment, broken relationships and homelessness, create potential for intergenerational trauma extending decades into the future. In this article, we argue that, in the absence of a vaccine, governments need to introduce universal basic income as a means of mitigating this trauma. (PsycInfo Database Record (c)

Work expectations, employment patterns, and psychological distress during the Great Recession among older Americans and South Koreans.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Perceived uncertainty about future employment and employment paths during economic crises can negatively affect the mental health of workers. This study examined the association between work expectations and psychological distress among Baby Boomers (born 1948-1965) in the United States and South Korea and explored how employment patterns moderated this association before, during, and after the Great Recession. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Data came from 2006 to 2018 waves of the Health and Retirement Study (n = 2,647) and Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging (n = 1,4

U.S. marital disruptions and their economic and social correlates, 1860-1948.

A new estimate of U.S. marital disruptions shows an increase in desertions relative to divorces after 1900. Desertions were the more volatile component of marital disruptions because of their greater responsiveness to general economic conditions. Large marriage cohorts, formed in the years of economic expansion, disrupted in greater numbers: an increase in the marriage rate by 10 per 1,000 unmarried women raised the proportion of disrupted marriage by 7.3 percentage points. Conversely, during years of recession, many poorer couples were discouraged from marriage; smaller marriage cohorts with

Housing instability and alcohol problems during the 2007-2009 US recession: the moderating role of perceived family support.

The 2007-2009 US economic recession was marked by unprecedented rates of housing instability and relatively little is known about how this instability impacted alcohol problems. While previous studies have linked homelessness to increased rates of alcohol use and abuse, housing instability during a recession impacts a much larger segment of the population and usually does not result in homelessness. Using a nationally representative sample of US adults, this study examines the association between housing instability during the recession and alcohol outcomes. Additionally, we assess whether thi

The business cycle, health behavior, and chronic disease: A study over Three decades.

The effect of macroeconomic fluctuations on individual health remains highly debated. We estimate the effect of the business cycle on health and health behavior in the U.S. using the NLSY79 panel data for 11,406 respondents between 1979 and 2014. Most of our survey respondents have no chronic illness in 1979, and develop these conditions during the sample period. This allows us to estimate the true effect of economic fluctuation on the likelihood of developing chronic conditions. The results indicate a considerable difference in the cyclic variation of chronic diseases. After controlling for i

Cross-border COVID-19 spread amidst malaria re-emergence in Venezuela: a human rights analysis.

BACKGROUND: Since 2016 Venezuela has seen a collapse in its economy and public health infrastructure resulting in a humanitarian crisis and massive outward migration. With the emergence of the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 at the end of 2019, the public health emergency within its borders and in neighboring countries has become more severe and as increasing numbers of Venezuelans migrants return home or get stuck along migratory routes, new risks are emerging in the region. RESULTS: Despite clear state obligations to respect, protect and fulfil the rights to health and related economic, social

Austerity policy and child health in European countries: a systematic literature review.

BACKGROUND: To analyse the impact of austerity measures taken by European governments as a response to the 2008 economic and financial crisis on social determinants on child health (SDCH), and child health outcomes (CHO). METHODS: A systematic literature review was carried out in Medline (Ovid), Embase, Web of Science, PsycInfo, and Sociological abstracts in the last 5 years from European countries. Studies aimed at analysing the Great Recession, governments' responses to the crisis, and its impact on SDCH were included. A narrative synthesis of the results was carried out. The risk of bias w

Economic sentiment during the COVID pandemic: Evidence from search behaviour in the EU.

The COVID-19 pandemic has inflicted an economic hardship unprecedented for the modern age. In this paper, we show that the health crisis and ensuing lockdown, came with an unseen shift in households' economic sentiment. First, using a European dataset of country-level and regional internet searches, we document a substantial increase in people's business cycle related searches in the months following the coronavirus outbreak. People's unemployment concerns jumped to levels well-above those during the Great Recession. Second, we observe a significant, coinciding slowdown in labour markets and c

Child Abuse and Neglect Risk in Times of Crisis.

Child abuse and neglect impacts millions of children each year, and the many detrimental impacts on health, well-being, and the economy persist across the lifespan and intergenerationally. Risk and protective factors make child abuse and neglect more or less likely, but during humanitarian crises like economic downturns and health crises, the context and conditions are ripe for increased risk of perpetration and victimization. Prevention is possible when we take a public health approach, and every sector assures the conditions that bolster families, like concrete and economic supports, access

Does an increase of low income families affect child health inequalities? A Swedish case study.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Reduction of health inequalities is a primary public health target in many countries. A change of proportion of low income families might affect child health inequalities. Yet, the importance of family incomes in high income welfare states is not well established. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of increased percentage of low income families on child health inequalities during an economic recession in Sweden, 1991-1996. DESIGN: Health inequalities for six health indicators were assessed during the period 1991-1996 and during adjacent periods. Relative ineq

Depression in the US population during the time periods surrounding the great recession.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the time periods surrounding the 2008 US economic downturn were accompanied by an increase in prevalence of depression in the US adult population. METHOD: We used data from the 24,182 adults aged ≥ 18 years who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey during 2005-2012. A cross-sectional analysis was performed at each time period to determine prevalence of major and other depression as assessed by standardized questionnaires based on 9 criteria for major depressive episodes defined by DSM-IV. RESULTS: The demographic characteristics

Achieving adult status in Greece in the aftermath of the global financial crisis.

The attainment of adult status in Greece is a neglected research issue. Sociodemographic changes and the severity and long duration of the global financial crisis in this country (2008-2018) may have contributed to the delayed entry into adulthood, especially among university students. In this study, conducted during the financial crisis (2015), 814 university students (ages 18-25; M = 19.9) provided information on subjective adult status, subjective adult status with significant others, achievement of adulthood criteria, and several personal and contextual variables. Results showed that two t

Estimating the collapse of Afghanistan's economy using nightlights data.

The Taliban's takeover of Afghanistan in August 2021 is associated with a rapid collapse of the Afghan economy. However, assessing the scale of this collapse is proving difficult as official data are scarce. To complement qualitative measures obtained through rapid surveys of the population, we employ monthly nightlights data as a proxy measure for changes in economic activity. By combining a synthetic control approach with nightlights data from neighboring countries, our analysis reveals a significant shift in Afghanistan's economic trajectory: from positive growth to a deep recession, even c

Socioeconomic disparities and health: impacts and pathways.

Growing socioeconomic disparity is a global concern, as it could affect population health. The author and colleagues have investigated the health impacts of socioeconomic disparities as well as the pathways that underlie those disparities. Our meta-analysis found that a large population has risks of mortality and poor self-rated health that are attributable to income inequality. The study results also suggested the existence of threshold effects (ie, a threshold of income inequality over which the adverse impacts on health increase), period effects (ie, the potential for larger impacts in late

Effect of Austerity Measures on Infant Mortality: Evidence From Greece.

Governments frequently adopt austerity policies when facing economic crises, yet their long-term consequences for population health remain incompletely understood. This paper examines the impact of large-scale fiscal austerity on infant mortality by exploiting the Troika-led economic adjustment program implemented in Greece beginning in 2010 as a quasi-experimental shock. Using the synthetic control method, we construct a counterfactual for Greece based on OECD and Union for the Mediterranean countries that did not experience austerity of comparable depth or duration. Relative to this counterf

Recent changes in particulate air pollution over China observed from space and the ground: effectiveness of emission control.

The Chinese government has moved aggressively since 2005 to reduce emissions of a number of pollutants including primary particulate matter (PM) and sulfur dioxide (SO(2)), efforts inadvertently aided since late 2008 by economic recession. Satellite observations of aerosol optical depth (AOD) and column nitrogen dioxide (NO(2)) provide independent indicators of emission trends, clearly reflecting the sharp onset of the recession in the fall of 2008 and rebound of the economy in the latter half of 2009. Comparison of AOD with ground-based observations of PM over a longer period indicate that em

Ask the experts.

Although UK healthcare spending is now close to the European average( Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development 2008 ), older people still receive inadequate services ( Healthcare Commission 2008 ). The recession is a time of great peril and great opportunity: there is the risk of savage funding cuts and falling quality; but there is also the opportunity to integrate our fragmented healthcare system and harness the skills of nurses to drive up quality.

Could the re-emerging practice of wild boar hunting linked to the recent economic crisis lead to new outbreaks of trichinellosis in Lebanon?

BACKGROUND: Documented trichinellosis outbreaks in Lebanon date back to the late 19th century. The first published outbreaks were attributed to the consumption of wild boar meat, while those that followed incriminated pork. The practice of hunting wild boar is currently re-emerging in Lebanon given the recent economic crisis that has limited the purchase of livestock meat. RESULTS: In Lebanon, at least 15 outbreaks of trichinellosis have been reported since 1870. We report an outbreak in January 2019, where five of the fifteen people present at a barbecue party were diagnosed with trichinello
