Family Nurse Practitioner students often navigate graduate education while managing personal, professional, and emotional stressors. Many enter programs with histories of trauma, which may impair learning and performance in rigid, high-stakes academic environments. This pilot study explored the feasibility and perceived impact of implementing trauma-informed educational practices (TIEP) in an asynchronous Family Nurse Practitioner course using the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's six principles to trauma-informed care as a framework. A mixed methods design was used w

BACKGROUND: Nurse practitioners (NPs) work in a variety of health care settings and care for people with life-threatening illnesses or at the end-of-life (EOL). Therefore, NP programs should be active in preparing future NPs to handle caring for patients at the EOL stage.
PURPOSE: To determine the status of EOL education in NP programs in the US.
METHODS: The study was a cross-sectional, observational study of all NP programs in the US accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education as of December 2023.
RESULTS: Sixty-three percent (n = 59) of the programs either did not have a

This paper is based on a survey of graduates from the B.Sc. in Nursing studies at the New University of Ulster (now the University of Ulster). Six cohorts, those entering between 1975 and 1980, were sent a postal questionnaire. The results cover the careers of these graduates and also describe their problems and their aspirations. The findings confirm those of other studies in relation to the clinical orientation of graduate nurses. Some respondents had positive views about graduate status, others had experienced prejudice and even hostility. Most respondents intended to pursue a lifetime care

The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree has become firmly established as the terminal practice degree for advanced practice registered nurses in the United States. A defining component of the DNP curriculum requires students to implement a scholarly project that addresses a clinical problem and improves patient or system outcomes. This article describes the development and implementation of a structured clinical-academic partnership between a university-based DNP nurse anesthesia program and a pediatric health care organization in the southeastern United States. Central to this collaborati

Advanced Practice Nursing is internationally recognised as an innovative model of practice that expands the traditional scope of nursing by integrating specialised knowledge, advanced clinical skills, and greater autonomy in clinical decision-making. Within this model, research competence is recognised as a strategic pillar for consolidating Advanced Practice Nursing practice. Citizen Science, in turn, represents an innovative approach that promotes the active involvement of citizens throughout the research process, strengthening the alignment between research priorities and community needs. Nursing informatics is a relatively new nursing specialty. Recognized by the American Nurses' Association in 1992, this field within nursing has grown exponentially. Once the purview of highly specialized individuals, nursing informatics has now crept into all dimensions of nursing, from domain of advanced nurse practitioners to prominence in critical care nursing. Nowhere is the management and processing of health-related information more important than in the care of the critically ill patient. Fast-paced environments, split-second decision making, wireless communications, monitoring systems

Surgical care is becoming more complex, and hospitals are under amplified pressure to improve quality and prevent harm. Ongoing sentinel events, such as wrong-site surgery and retained surgical items, indicate that important safety errors persist and require system-level solutions. Doctor of nursing practice (DNP)-prepared perioperative nurses are well positioned to lead system-level improvements by using evidence-based practice, quality improvement, and implementation science to translate research into practice and develop sustainable improvements over time. This article describes how DNP-pre

Genomic advances are rapidly transforming the understanding of health and illness, making it essential for the nursing workforce and faculty to be equipped to teach and deliver genomic-informed care. The Translation and Integration of Genomics is Essential to Doctoral NuRsing (TIGER) program, supported by the National Human Genome Research Institute, utilizes a "train-the-trainer" model to prepare doctoral nurse educators to integrate genomic content into nursing curricula, practice, and research. The TIGER program aims to build capacity among doctoral-prepared nursing faculty to champion geno

This paper looks broadly at issues to do with quality monitoring in higher education and considers the role and focus of the Nursing Council of New Zealand in the approval of and ongoing monitoring of undergraduate nursing degree programmes. It is suggested that the approach taken by the Nursing Council is accountability-led where minimal attention is given to teaching and learning and actual graduate outcomes. This may lead to a mistaken belief that Nursing Council's monitoring focuses on quality or that the outcomes of their monitoring might contribute to programme enhancement. A shift to em

The adoption of the doctor of nursing practice (DNP) degree by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing has led to the exponential growth of DNP programs across the United States. This article is Part II of a 2-part series exploring DNP program information. The purpose of this research was to create a benchmark of information that can be used to compare and contrast programs throughout the United States. Part I discussed DNP program characteristics. Part II consists of DNP admission criteria that include graduate record examination (GRE) requirements, grade point average (GPA), national

OBJECTIVE: Evidence-based healthcare (EBHC) has emerged as a global standard in clinical practice, offering a structured approach to improving patient outcomes. For nurses, EBHC serves as a critical framework for identifying and applying the best available evidence when addressing clinical challenges. This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of integrating virtual reality (VR) into the BOPPPS (Bridge-in, Objective, Pre-test, Participatory Learning, Post-test and Summary) teaching model to enhance the design and delivery of EBHC courses.

BACKGROUND: Nurses in long-term care (LTC) and home and community care (HCC) are well acquainted with the high workloads and manifold job stressors that pervade these sectors, making it increasingly difficult to employ and retain a strong workforce. In response, nursing bridging education programs have been proposed to enhance recruitment and retention. While the efficacy of such programs is supported, the transition to practice experience of new nurse graduates is often associated with feelings of under-preparedness. Understanding the lived experience of nurses transitioning into new roles in

Nurse practitioner (NP) programs have a long history of producing safe and competent NPs; however, bold, transformative leadership is needed to set a minimum standard for quality NP education to support a 21st-century healthcare system. This paper is a call to action for leaders in NP education to transition NP education to the DNP degree utilizing the 2022 National Task Force Standards for Quality NP Education and a competency-based approach as defined in the 2021 AACN Essentials. There is now an opportunity to redesign healthcare systems with quality and equity as a primary consideration and

BACKGROUND: Although retaining new nurses is imperative for the future of the nursing profession, it remains a challenging task in the healthcare industry. Understanding the career journey of new graduates as they transition from students to nurses is vital. However, longitudinal studies investigating the factors influencing retention during this period are lacking.
AIM: The aim of this study is to identify the influencing factors and develop a longitudinal prediction model for new graduate nurse retention.
METHODS: A secondary data analysis was conducted using the New Nurse e-Cohort Study d

TOPIC: The experience of new graduates in acute care.
PURPOSE: The majority of newly graduated nurses make their initial professional role transition in acute care. Being socialized into the dynamic culture of today's hospitals creates significant challenges not only for the nurses themselves but also for institutions of higher education, healthcare administrators, and policy makers across this country. Demanding workloads for hospital nurses, an aging nursing workforce, and the high level of stress inherent in workplaces across North America are factors contributing to an exodus of both new

BACKGROUND: Organizational socialization is a significant factor in new graduate nurses' transition from students to professional nursing roles. However, there is a lack of understanding about the impact of external influences such as community and societal conditions. This study aimed to examine personal, community, and societal conditions on the organizational socialization of new graduate nurses.
METHODS: New graduate nurses with two years or less experience at South Korean national university-affiliated hospitals participated in the survey. The main outcome variable was organizational soc

Collaboration between service and academia has often been disparate. A new model of cooperation was designed in the Fall of 1992 by faculty at the University of Connecticut School of Nursing and nurse administrators at John Dempsey Hospital of the University of Connecticut Health Center. A combined effort was undertaken to expeditiously prepare, at the graduate level, acute care nurse practitioners in Critical Care and Neonatal/Perinatal Nursing. The impetus for the collaborative effort was due in part to: reduced medical residency hours for patient coverage; limited access by patients to care
