Oxidative Flow Electrochemistry: A Platform for Generating Reactive Intermediates and Reaction Control.

Oxidative electrochemistry provides direct access to highly reactive intermediates under mild and sustainable conditions, yet controlling reactivity remains a central challenge in synthesis. In batch electrochemical systems, short-lived radicals, electrophilic oxidants, and cationic intermediates often undergo overoxidation, decomposition, or competing side reactions because of inefficient mass transfer and poor thermal control. Continuous-flow electrochemistry addresses many of these limitations by enabling rapid intermediate generation, efficient mass transport, precise residence-time contro

Early Detection of High-Altitude Hypoxic Brain Injury by In Vivo Electrochemistry.

High-altitude hypoxic brain injury (HHBI) is a kind of acute mountain sickness and the survival rate of patients with HHBI can be improved only if it is detected and treated at the early stage. However, limited by speediness and accuracy, it is still very difficult for most of current approaches to realize the early detection of HHBI. We propose herein a novel strategy for this goal based on spatiotemporal changes in the brain oxygen level. As revealed by in vivo electrochemistry, the characteristic changes of brain oxygen level under the high-altitude exposure are directly associated with the

Electrochemistry and catalytic properties of amphiphilic vitamin B12 derivatives in nonaqueous media.

The reduction pathway of cobalester (CN)Cble, an amphiphilic vitamin B12 derivative, was investigated in organic solvents under electrochemical conditions and compared with mono- and dicyanocobyrinates. The redox characteristics were determined using cyclic voltammetry and spectroelectrochemical methods. The presence of a nucleotide moiety in B12-derivative impedes the in situ formation of dicyano-species thus facilitating the (CN)Co(iii) to Co(i) reduction. The (CN)Cble shows stepwise reduction to Co(i) via (CN)Co(ii). The reduction of (CN)Co(ii)/Co(i) was found to depend on cyanide-solvent e

Effects of metal ions on the reactivity and corrosion electrochemistry of Fe/FeS nanoparticles.

Nano-zerovalent iron (nZVI) formed under sulfidic conditions results in a biphasic material (Fe/FeS) that reduces trichloroethene (TCE) more rapidly than nZVI associated only with iron oxides (Fe/FeO). Exposing Fe/FeS to dissolved metals (Pd(2+), Cu(2+), Ni(2+), Co(2+), and Mn(2+)) results in their sequestration by coprecipitation as dopants into FeS and FeO and/or by electroless precipitation as zerovalent metals that are hydrogenation catalysts. Using TCE reduction rates to probe the effect of metal amendments on the reactivity of Fe/FeS, it was found that Mn(2+) and Cu(2+) decreased TCE red

Frozen-State Electrochemistry Enables Proton-Selective Reaction Environments for Deterministic Atomic Construction.

Electrochemical reactions are conventionally confined to liquid electrolytes, where charge transport and mass migration are intrinsically coupled, defining both the reaction kinetics and structural evolution. Here, we show that frozen acidic electrolytes can serve as proton-conductive, mass-transport-restricted media for electrochemical single-atom construction. Within a defined subzero temperature window, frozen aqueous electrolytes support proton-selective charge transport through hydrogen-bonded ice lattices while suppressing the long-range migration of heavier ionic species. This transport

A flow electrochemistry-enabled synthesis of 2-substituted N-(methyl-d)piperidines.

A synthesis of N-monodeuteriomethyl-2-substituted piperidines is described. An efficient and readily scalable anodic methoxylation of N-formylpiperidine in an undivided microfluidic electrolysis cell delivers methoxylated piperidine 3, which is a precursor to a N-formyliminium ion and enables C-nucleophiles to be introduced at the 2-position. The isotopically labelled N-deuteriomethyl group is installed using the Eschweiler-Clarke reaction with formic acid-d2 and unlabelled formaldehyde. Monodeuterated N-methyl groups in these molecular systems possess small isotropic proton chemical shift dif

Noble gas electrochemistry-driven luminescence integrated with machine learning for environmental monitoring.

Noble gases are traditionally known as not being easily involved in chemical reactions owing to their stable electronic configuration. Here, we study the electrochemical redox and electrochemiluminescence (ECL) mechanisms of a series of noble gases (radon, xenon and krypton) for the first time and demonstrate their ability to produce an ECL signal with an emission peak in the range of 600-640 nm. Among them, the key intermediates Rn˙+/Xe˙+ are observed via HPLC-MS to confirm their electrochemical redox and ECL process. Additionally, the anodic/cathodic ECL behavior and the ECL intensity of rad

Solid Electrolyte Interphase Formation in Tellurium Iodide Perovskites during Electrochemistry and Photoelectrochemistry.

Halide perovskites are promising photoelectrocatalytic materials. Their further development requires understanding of surface processes during electrochemistry. Thin films of tellurium-based vacancy-ordered perovskites with formula A2TeI6, A = Cs, methylammonium (MA), were deposited onto transparent conducting substrates using aerosol-assisted chemical vapor deposition. Thin film stability as electrodes and photoelectrodes was tested in dichloromethane containing tetrabutylammonium PF6 (TBAPF6). Using photoemission spectroscopy, we show that the formation of a solid electrolyte interphase on t

Quantification of Tumor Protein Biomarkers from Lung Patient Serum Using Nanoimpact Electrochemistry.

Protein quantification with high throughput and high sensitivity is essential in the early diagnosis and elucidation of molecular mechanisms for many diseases. Conventional approaches for protein assay often suffer from high costs, long analysis time, and insufficient sensitivity. The recently emerged nanoimpact electrochemistry (NIE), as a contrast, allows in situ detection of analytes one at a time with simplicity, fast response, high throughput, and the potential of reducing the detection limits down to the single entity level. Herein, we propose a NIE-enabled electrochemical immunoassay us

Electrochemistry of Intact Versus Degraded Cephalosporin Antibiotics Facilitated by LC-MS Analysis.

The electrochemical detection of cephalosporins is a promising approach for the monitoring of cephalosporin levels in process waters. However, this class of antibiotics, like penicillins, is composed of chemically active molecules and susceptible to hydrolysis and aminolysis of the four membered β-lactam ring present. In order to develop a smart monitoring strategy for cephalosporins, the influence of degradation (hydrolysis and aminolysis) on the electrochemical fingerprint has to be taken into account. Therefore, an investigation was carried out to understand the changes of the voltammetric

Cavity-Enabled Supramolecular Regulation of Capacitive-Redox Bromine Electrochemistry in Zinc-Bromine Batteries.

The intrinsic trade-offs between high-rate capacitive processes and high-capacity redox reactions fundamentally limit advanced electrochemical energy storage. Here, we transcend this paradigm by introducing cavity-enabled supramolecular microreactors as a versatile platform for synergistic bromine capacitive-redox electrochemistry. These microreactors exhibit voltage-responsive dual functions, operating as a high-capacity ion-sequestration matrix at low voltages governed by their tailored electrostatic cavity landscape, and dynamically switching to an anchoring and conversion-promoting center

Pb2+-Selective Nanoemulsion-Integrated Single-Entity Electrochemistry for Ultrasensitive Sensing of Blood Lead.

Unequivocally, Pb2+ as a harmful substance damaging children's brain and nerve systems, thereby causing behavior and learning disabilities, should be detected much lower than the elevated blood lead for children, 240 nM, endorsed by US CDC considering the unknown neurotoxic effects, yet the ultralow detection limit up to sub-ppb level remains a challenge due to the intrinsically insufficient sensitivity in the current analytical techniques. Here, we present nanoemulsion (NE)-integrated single-entity electrochemistry (NI-SEE) toward ultrasensitive sensing of blood lead using Pb-ion-selective io

Silicon-Based Solid-State Batteries: Electrochemistry and Mechanics to Guide Design and Operation.

Solid-state batteries (SSBs) are promising alternatives to the incumbent lithium-ion technology; however, they face a unique set of challenges that must be overcome to enable their widespread adoption. These challenges include solid-solid interfaces that are highly resistive, with slow kinetics, and a tendency to form interfacial voids causing diminished cycle life due to fracture and delamination. This modeling study probes the evolution of stresses at the solid electrolyte (SE) solid-solid interfaces, by linking the chemical and mechanical material properties to their electrochemical respons

Chloride-bridged oxovanadium(V) complexes with alkoxyalkoxide ligands. Synthesis, structure, electrochemistry and reactivities.

A series of mixed alkoxyalkoxo chloro complexes of vanadium(V), [VOCl2(OCH2CH2OR)]2 (R = Me, Et, iPr, Bz), [VOCl2(OCMe2CH2OMe)]2 and [VOCl2(OCH2(cyclo-C4H7O)]2, were synthesised and characterised. The title compounds can be obtained either from VOCl3 and the alkoxyalcohols by HCl elimination or from the corresponding lithium alkoxides and VOCl3 by salt metathesis reaction. X-Ray diffraction studies revealed the title compounds to be dimers with chloride bridging ligands and intramolecular ether coordination. Electrochemical results obtained by cyclic voltammetry indicate irreversible, reductiv

Benchmarking Nanoscale Electrochemistry in Operando Transmission Electron Microscopy with a Standard Reference Electrode.

Operando/in situ methods have significantly advanced understanding of the nanoscale dynamics at solid-liquid interfaces under real-time reaction conditions. In particular, operando electrochemical liquid-cell scanning transmission electron microscopy (EC-STEM) enables real-time tracking of structural evolution, yet precise potential control remains challenging due to the incompatibility of standard reference electrodes in confined liquid cells. Here, we report real-time reference electrode (RE) calibration via a metal-bridge strategy connecting an on-chip Pt pseudo-RE with an external Ag/AgCl

Hydrogel Electrochemistry as a Structured Interfacial Platform: From Early Concepts to Emerging Applications.

Hydrogels are emerging as structured electrochemical interfaces that do more than replace liquid electrolytes in soft and aqueous systems. Because they combine ionic conductivity with a chemically and structurally tunable polymer network, hydrogels can define where electrochemical reactions occur, how ions partition and move, and how interfacial signals are stabilized or transduced. This minireview discusses recent progress in hydrogel electrochemistry through three connected themes, including spatial control of confined electrochemical reactions, molecular engineering of ion transport in hydr

Biotransformation-electrochemistry coupling for multiplexed on-site detection of hydrophobic polycyclic aromatic pollutants.

Rapid on-site detection of polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs), such as biphenyl and carbazole, remains challenging because of their poor aqueous solubility, weak electroactivity, and matrix interference. Here, we developed a biotransformation-enabled electrochemical decoding strategy that couples a biphenyl 2,3-dioxygenase (BphA)-expressing whole-cell module with a miniaturized reduced graphene oxide/colloidal gold (rGO/CG)-modified screen-printed electrode for biphenyl and carbazole quantification. Clinically Applicable Homogeneous Assay for Serological Diagnosis of Alpha-Fetoprotein by Impact Electrochemistry.

Tumor protein quantification with high specificity, sensitivity, and efficiency is of great significance to enable early diagnosis and effective treatment. The existing methods for protein analysis usually suffer from high cost, time-consuming operation, and insufficient sensitivity, making them not clinically friendly. In this work, a label-free homogeneous sensor based on the nano-impact electroanalytic (NIE) technique was proposed for the detection of tumor protein marker alpha-fetoprotein (AFP). The detection principle is based on the recovery of current of single PtNP catalyzed hydrazine
