Toward Sustainable Anatomy Laboratories: A Screening Assessment of Environmental Burdens and Chemical Hotspots in Embalming Formulations.

Sustainable laboratory practice is generally focused on reducing occupational exposure in anatomy, with environmental impact due to embalming chemicals receiving less attention. We apply a sustainable chemistry methodology that reconsiders a screen of seven cadaver preservation formulations with complete for and two with incomplete data. A whole life-cycle assessment compared carbon burdens per kilogram and per liter of solution based on a cadaver weighing 64 kg required. The findings also suggest that mixtures of preservatives are not environmentally interchangeable. Finally, the burden produ

A South African case study on anatomical embalming for human body donation programmes with toxicological considerations.

Body embalming, a practice with deep historical roots across various cultures, forms the backbone of contemporary human body donation educational programmes. In this study, we explored current embalming practices within six South African human anatomical dissection programmes, focusing on the use and volumes of key chemicals-formalin, phenol, and alcohol-and their associated health risks and potential toxicity. We measured and compared aspects of embalming practices such as the duration of body preservation and the annual intake of bodies. Variations in embalming practices and chemical ratios

RETRACTED: Genotyping strategies for tissues fixed with various embalming fluids for human identification, databasing, and traceability.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Within anatomical willed body programs and skeletal collections, whole bodies and their disassociated limbs and organs are identified and tracked. However, if these tracking mechanisms fail, DNA recovered from the formalin-fixed tissues/organs could provide an additional layer of quality assurance. Embalming fluids preserve biological tissues; however, they also damage, fragment, and cross-link DNA and protein molecules. This project investigated the success of STR-typing from various soft tissue and bone samples that were fixed with embalming solutions with a range of formaldehyde concentrati

Usefulness of N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone Embalming for Endoscopic Transnasal Skull Base Approach in Cadaver Dissection.

Formalin or formaldehyde is commonly used for cadaver fixation, which is, however, not suitable for endoscopic transnasal skull base approach because of consequent hardening of the soft tissue. Several alternatives have been reported, but each of them also has some limitations. We applied a novel fixation method using N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone (NVP), a precursor of the water-soluble macromolecular polymer, for endoscopic transnasal skull base approach in six donated cadaver specimens. In four cadavers, elasticity of the soft tissue in the nasal cavity was almost similar to that of living tissue, a

Assessing the effectiveness of embalming in cadavers with COVID-19 after full autopsy and minimally invasive autopsy.

Embalming (EM) reduces residual SARS-CoV-2 in tissues, but its effectiveness on the external body surfaces of corpses infected with coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19) remains unclear. We therefore examined the presence of SARS-CoV-2 in the pharynx, anus, and on external body surfaces following EM in nine COVID-19-infected corpses, including four full autopsy cases and five minimally invasive autopsy (MIA) cases. Antigen testing and viral quantification using real-time PCR were performed. Nasopharyngeal antigen tests were positive prior to EM and negative thereafter in all nine cases. Among the

Thiel embalming: Quantifying histological changes in skeletal muscle and tendon and investigating the role of boric acid.

Cadaver preservation methods impact their utilization in anatomical research and teaching. Thiel-embalmed cadavers show flexibility, however, the cause remains poorly understood. This study aimed to (1) describe qualitative and quantitative histological differences between Thiel-embalmed and formalin-fixed skeletal muscle and tendon tissue; (2) investigate whether boric acid in Thiel solution is solely responsible for modification of tissues; and (3) explore whether the modifications observed could potentially explain the mechanisms underpinning flexibility of Thiel cadavers. Skeletal muscle a

The use of fry (embalming fluid and PCP-laced cigarettes or marijuana sticks) among crack cocaine smokers.

Statistics show that the prevalence of crack cocaine use and embalming fluid and phencyclidine (PCP)-laced cigarettes or marijuana sticks, commonly referred to on the street as "fry" or "wet" is a problem; however, the relationship between these substances of abuse and concurrent polydrug use is unknown. In the present study, a cross-sectional survey was conducted among 426 African-American crack users in Houston, Texas, to investigate the difference between those who concurrently reported lifetime (defined as at least one usage of fry in life) fry use and those who stated they never used fry.

Use of water-soluble dye in embalmed anatomical donor vascular mold silicone injection.

The simple, rapid, and inexpensive mold silicone infusion technique is recognized by neuroanatomical laboratories. This study optimized the dye-staining step of the mold silicone perfusion technique and explored the optimal method for staining mold silicone. Vascular perfusion was performed in six embalmed anatomical donor heads. Three were perfused using the conventional technique with fat-soluble-dyed mold silicone, and the other three using the rapid-curing technique with water-soluble-dyed mold silicone. The three specimens perfused with fat-soluble-dyed silicone showed dye extravasation a

Molecular detection of JC virus in embalmed, formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded brain tissue.

Embalmed tissues are adequate for the detection of JC virus in lesions of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) by immunohistologic and molecular methods. JC virus was readily detected in embalmed brain tissue using immunohistochemistry (IHC), in situ hybridization (ISH), and the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Two brains were removed from bodies that had been embalmed at least 24 h prior to autopsy. They were subsequently post fixed in 10% buffered formalin for 10-14 days before dissection and molecular studies were performed. Though these techniques are not novel, their use in em

The Potential of Iodized Cadaveric Thumb Fingerprints as Markers of Perfusion Completion During Embalming: An Experimental Observational Study.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The formalin-based method of embalming is the most common procedure employed for the preservation of cadavers in most medical schools of South Asia. The adequacy of perfusion of formalin through the cadaveric tissues would aptly mark the time of completion of embalming. However, there is currently no objective evidence to justify the endpoint of perfusion in embalming. This study addressed the aforementioned problem by utilizing cadaveric thumb fingerprints coated with a modified iodine-based solution that indicated the completion of perfusion during embalming. METHODS: Ca

Cluster analyses of contemporary embalming protocols in central European anatomy institutions: A collaborative effort to minimize chemical exposure.

BACKGROUND: Anatomical embalming forms a mainstay in the provision of teaching materials based on human post-mortem tissues. As a consequence of regulations worldwide to minimize the use of formaldehyde due to its harmful nature, effective measures must be taken to minimize its application in the anatomy laboratory. This study aimed to identify commonalities among embalming protocols used in Austrian, German and Swiss anatomies to reduce formaldehyde usage and provide a foundation for joint accreditation. METHODS: Survey data on all procedures, technologies and chemicals related to embalming

Challenges associated with vascular access through the common carotid artery during embalming procedures in humans: a technical note.

BACKGROUND: The teaching of anatomy is a key component in the training of physicians, and the foundation of this teaching is the human body, which must be properly prepared to be used as a teaching aid. Due to a lack of modern literature on this topic, we decided to write a technical note discussing access to the carotid artery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We pre-qualified 43 donor bodies for the study. The bodies had to meet standards such as no signs of post-mortem decomposition, preservation of body integrity, and the absence of known infections. Carotid artery access was performed based on des

Experimental investigations of the human oesophagus: anisotropic properties of the embalmed muscular layer under large deformation.

The oesophagus is a primarily mechanical organ whose material characterisation would aid in the investigation of its pathophysiology, help in the field of tissue engineering, and improve surgical simulations and the design of medical devices. However, the layer-dependent, anisotropic properties of the organ have not been investigated using human tissue, particularly in regard to its viscoelastic and stress-softening behaviour. Restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic meant that fresh human tissue was not available for dissection. Therefore, in this study, the layer-specific material proper

Micro-CT imaging of Thiel-embalmed and iodine-stained human temporal bone for 3D modeling.

INTRODUCTION: This pilot study explores whether a human Thiel-embalmed temporal bone is suitable for generating an accurate and complete data set with micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) and whether solid iodine-staining improves visualization and facilitates segmentation of middle ear structures. METHODS: A temporal bone was used to verify the accuracy of the imaging by first digitally measuring the stapes on the tomography images and then physically under the microscope after removal from the temporal bone. All measurements were compared with literature values. The contralateral temporal b

Testing for midazolam and oxycodone in blood after formalin-embalmment: About a complex medico-legal case.

The stability of compounds in formalin solution is an important factor for drug analysis in a toxicological investigation. In this article, the authors report a complex medico-legal case involving midazolam and oxycodone. The complexity of this case comes from the fact that the body was embalmed with formalin solution before the autopsy. This technique, called thanatopraxy, allows the preservation of corpses from decomposition, the destruction of a maximal number of micro-organisms, and the presentation of the body with a natural appearance to the family. Unfortunately, when thanatopraxy is pe

The chemicals between us-First results of the cluster analyses on anatomy embalming procedures in the German-speaking countries.

Hands-on courses utilizing preserved human tissues for educational training offer an important pathway to acquire basic anatomical knowledge. Owing to the reevaluation of formaldehyde limits by the European Commission, a joint approach was chosen by the German-speaking anatomies in Europe (Germany, Austria, Switzerland) to find commonalities among embalming protocols and infrastructure. A survey comprising 537 items was circulated to all anatomies in German-speaking Europe. Clusters were established for "ethanol"-, formaldehyde-based ("FA"), and "other" embalming procedures, depending on the c

Are spinal cord and medulla samples from embalmed donors suitable for histological examination? A pilot study.

A general belief exists that tissue from anatomical donors, especially from the central nervous system (CNS), may not be suitable for histological investigation. This is based on the idea that fixation routinely used in embalming whilst optimal for enabling dissection, insufficiently preserves tissue architecture at the cellular level. However, anatomical donors represent a precious resource for microscopical investigation, provided that preservation is sufficient to enable recognition of structures at the histological level. This could considerably extend the biomedical knowledge currently ga
