Selective Devaluation Affects the Processing of Preferred Rewards.

The present study investigated whether the representation of subjective preferences in the event-related potential is manipulable through selective devaluation, i.e., the consumption of a specific food item until satiety. Thirty-four participants completed a gambling task in which they chose between virtual doors to find one of three snack items, representing a high, medium, or low preference outcome as defined by individual desire-to-eat ratings. In one of two test sessions, they underwent selective devaluation of the high preference outcome. In the other, they completed the task on an empty

Event-related potentials in substance use disorders: a narrative review based on articles from 1984 to 2012.

Mechanisms that mediate the transition from occasional, controlled, drug use to the impaired control that characterizes severe dependence are still a matter of investigation. The etiology of substance use disorders (SUDs) is complex, and in this context of complexity, the concept of "endophenotype," has gained extensive popularity in recent years. The main aim of endophenotypes is to provide a simpler, more proximal target to discover the biological underpinnings of a psychiatric syndrome. In this view, neurocognitive and neurophysiological impairments that suggest functional impairments assoc

Neural Activities Classification of Human Inhibitory Control Using Hierarchical Model.

Human inhibitory control refers to the suppression of behavioral response in real environments, such as when driving a car or riding a motorcycle, playing a game and operating a machine. The P300 wave is a neural marker of human inhibitory control, and it can be used to recognize the symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in human. In addition, the P300 neural marker can be considered as a stop command in the brain-computer interface (BCI) technologies. Therefore, the present study of electroencephalography (EEG) recognizes the mindset of human inhibition by observing the

Neurofeedback Reduces P300 Amplitudes to Intensely Emotive Pictures in Depressed Cancer Patients.

Objective. Electroencephalographic neurofeedback (EEG NF) or its effects on event-related potentials (ERPs) in quantitative EEG have not yet been systematically studied in cancer patients. The aim of this study was to investigate the emotional arousal and valence effects on the event-related P300 in a visual oddball paradigm by an individualized EEG alpha and theta/beta NF intervention in cancer patients and survivors (N = 18, age between 31 and 73 years). Methods. ERPs to low and high arousal target stimuli with either emotional positive or negative content and depressive state were obtained

The neural correlates of consciousness: A systematic review and meta-analysis of the visual awareness negativity and P3b.

Isolating the neural correlates of consciousness is a paramount challenge in neuroscience. In electroencephalographic research, two event-related potentials have been identified as candidate markers of visual awareness: the visual awareness negativity (VAN) and the P3b (or late positivity). To rigorously evaluate their validity as neural correlates of consciousness, we conducted the first systematic review and meta-analysis of these signals, presented as a registered report. We assessed their necessity and sufficiency through meta-analysis of "seen" effect sizes (where consciousness was presen

Evidence for parietal reward prediction errors using great grand average meta-analysis.

As a basic principle within the economics of decision-making, reinforcement learning dictates that individuals strive to repeat behaviour that elicits reward, and avoid behaviour that elicits punishment. Neuroeconomics aims to measure reinforcement learning physically in the brain through the use of reward prediction errors: the difference between expected outcome value and actual outcome value following decision-making behaviour. Two electrophysiological components, the frontocentral feedback-related negativity and the more parietal P3, are implicated in outcome processing, but whether these

[EVENT-RELATED POTENTIALS AND CLINICAL SYMPTOMS IN SCHIZOPHRENIA].

The investigation of schizophrenia's aetiology and pathomechanism is of high importance in neurosciences. In the recent decades, analyzing event-related potentials have proven to be useful to reveal the neuropsychological dysfunctions in schizophrenia. Even the very early stages of auditory stimulus processing are impaired in this disorder; this might contribute to the experience of auditory hallucinations. The present review summarizes the recent literature on the relationship between auditory hallucinations and event-related potentials. Due to the dysfunction of early auditory sensory proces

Relationship between attitudinal hostility and P300 latencies.

1. The purpose of the present study was to determine whether components of the P300 were related to aggression in a normal population. 2. Event-related potentials were recorded from midline sites during a standard pure tone auditory oddball task. 3. Findings indicated significantly prolonged P300 latencies to target stimuli in subjects with higher total aggression and attitudinal hostility scores on the BDHI. 4. The relationship between P300 latency and aggression extends findings in specifically aggressive populations. P300 amplitudes may only be reduced in samples displaying violent or assau

Systematic review and meta-analysis: Impact of unipolar depression on P300 amplitude and latency.

Depression is characterized by impairments of cognitive systems such as significant deficits in attention, memory, and cognitive control. The P300 (or P3) event-related potential (ERP) component has been extensively investigated over the past four decades to elucidate the underpinnings of these cognitive dysfunctions. Many studies have observed reduced P300 amplitude and prolonged P300 latency in individuals experiencing depression. The current study provides a comprehensive systematic quantitative review (i.e., meta-analysis) of the depression and P300 literature from 1981 to 2023 employing P

Auditory event-related potentials in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus.

We studied auditory event-related potentials (ERPs) in 17 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Latencies of N100 and P200 components were normal in all patients, whereas the latencies of target P300 and nontarget P300 components were significantly prolonged in SLE patients with and without cognitive dysfunction. The P300 component of ERPs can be applied to evaluate the cognitive aspects of central nervous system manifestations in SLE patients.

The development of Alzheimer's disease in Down's syndrome assessed by auditory event-related potentials.

Several studies have reported changes in auditory event-related potentials in patients with Alzheimer's type dementia. These include an increase in latency and a reduction in amplitude of the P300 (P3) response, a late positive component generated about 300 ms after an unexpected stimulus. Alzheimer's type dementia is an almost invariable acompaniment of ageing in Down's syndrome. This study was designed to assess the usefulness of the auditory P300 response as a measure of the onset of dementia in Down's subjects, who because of poor language development may be difficult to assess by psycholo

N200 and P300 component changes in Parkinson's disease: a meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairment can seriously affect the quality of life of Parkinson's disease (PD) patients. Although numerous studies showed that N200, P300 latency and amplitude are correlated with cognitive functions, there is a sufficient amount of controversial results. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct a meta-analysis of N200, P300 latency and amplitude data of event-related potential (ERP) in PD. METHODS: We systematically searched on PubMed and Web of Science for PD-related ERP studies published before December 2021. Standard mean difference (SMD) and 95% confidence interval (C

Electrophysiological and neuropsychological assessment of cognition in spinocerebellar ataxia type 1 patients: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Event-related potentials (ERPs) reflect cognitive processing: negative early components (N100, N200) are involved in the sensory and perceptual processing of a stimulus, whereas late positive component P300 requires conscious attention. Both neuropsychological and affective disorders are present in patients with spinocerebellar ataxia type 1 (SCA1), but the underlying mechanisms need further clarification. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this pilot study, we assessed cognitive processing by recording auditory ERPs in 16 consecutive SCA1 patients and 16 healthy controls (HC) matched for

Evoked Potential in Panic Disorder Patients: A Systematic Review.

Researchers have been using the electroencephalogram to better understand the cognitive and neurobiological bases of panic disorder (PD) through the P300 component; this is an electric potential of the cerebral cortex that is generated in response to external sensorial stimuli and which involves more complex neurophysiological processes related to stimulus interpretation; it is then used to investigate possible alterations in the information processing and attention of patients suffering from this disorder. Aiming to verify the results found by experimental articles already published about P30

Beneficial effects of thiamine on recognition memory and P300 in abstinent cocaine-dependent patients.

The present study evaluated the effects of thiamine vs. placebo on memory task performance and event-related electroencephalographic potentials in eight abstinent cocaine-dependent patients. Patients orally ingested 5 g of thiamine and 5 g of a lactose placebo on two separate days scheduled approximately 1 week apart. The order of administration was randomized. Double-blind procedures were followed. Approximately 3 h after ingesting the capsules, patients completed Sternberg's (1975) memory scanning task during which performance and event-related potentials (P300) were recorded simultaneously.

Event-related brain potentials in individuals at high and low risk for developing alcoholism: failure to replicate.

Event-related brain potentials (ERPs) were used to compare young men having a positive paternal family history for alcoholism (FHP) with carefully matched control subjects having no family history for alcoholism (FHN). The P300 ERP component was obtained from all subjects (n = 10/group) with a complex auditory paradigm before and on two occasions after they received a placebo drink which they were told might contain alcohol. The procedures employed replicated those of a previous study in which FHP subjects showed diminished P300 potentials compared to FHN subjects under the placebo as well as

Transcranial Alternating Current Stimulation (tACS) as a Tool to Modulate P300 Amplitude in Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD): Preliminary Findings.

Studies examining event-related potentials (ERP) in patients affected by attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have found considerable evidence of reduced target P300 amplitude across different perceptual modalities. P300 amplitude has been related to attention-driven context comparison and resource allocation processes. Altered P300 amplitude in ADHD can be reasonably assumed to be related to ADHD typical cognitive performance deficits. Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) can increase the amplitude of endogenous brain oscillations. Because ERP components can be viewe

Electrophysiological reactivity to emotional images and targets predicts the development of substance use disorders in adolescent girls.

A blunted P300, an event-related potential indicator of attentional processes, and blunted late positive potential (LPP), an event-related potential indicator of elaborative processing, confer risk for development of substance use disorders (SUD) in adolescents. However, few studies have examined whether electrophysiological reactivity to emotional stimuli predicts development of SUD in adolescents. It is also unclear whether these neural responses are a risk factor of proximal, precocious development of SUD versus distal SUD later in adolescence. The present study examined whether electrophys

Brain potentials reveal covert facial recognition in prosopagnosia.

Brain potentials were recorded in a prosopagnosic patient, in response to familiar and unfamiliar faces he was asked to recognize. The amplitude of the P300 component was found to be an inverse function of probability for each category of faces despite the patient's inability to consciously recognize the familiarity of these faces. In addition, P300 latency varied from 700 to 800 msec according to the familiarity of the faces, and P300 scalp location was different as a function of faces probability and overt recognition. The results imply that covert facial recognition may be evidenced in usin
