Food and Health: Nutrition for Prevention and Management of Cardiovascular Disease: 2026 ACC Scientific Statement: A Report of the American College of Cardiology.

Nutrition is a foundational determinant of cardiovascular health and a central component of the prevention and management of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity, chronic kidney disease, and cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic syndrome. Suboptimal dietary patterns remain among the leading modifiable causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Contemporary evidence supports a shift in nutrition guidance from isolated nutrients toward whole foods and dietary patterns that emphasize overall dietary quality, food choice, and degree of processing. Are Seed Oils the Culprit in Cardiometabolic and Chronic Diseases? A Narrative Review.

The demonization of seed oils "campaign" has become stronger over the decades. Despite the dietary guidelines provided by nutritional experts recommending the limiting of saturated fat intake and its replacement with unsaturated fat-rich food sources, some health experts ignore the dietary guidelines and the available human research evidence, suggesting the opposite. As contrarians, these individuals could easily shift public opinion so that dietary behavior moves away from intake of unsaturated fat-rich food sources (including seed oils) toward saturated fats, which is very concerning. Excess

Comparison of effects of dietary saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated fatty acids on plasma lipids and lipoproteins in man.

Twenty patients consumed a liquid diet in which the predominant fatty acids were either saturated (Sat), monounsaturated (Mono), or polyunsaturated (Poly). The fats in these three diets comprised 40% of total calories and consisted of palm oil, high-oleic safflower oil, and high-linoleic safflower oil, respectively. During the third and fourth week of each dietary period, multiple samples of blood were taken and were analyzed for plasma total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), and cholesterol in lipoprotein fractions (VLDL-C, LDL-C, and HDL-C). Twelve of the patients had normal TG levels; i

Effects of butter and soybean oils on solid-phase gastric emptying in patients with functional dyspepsia.

BACKGROUND: To determine whether vegetable fats cause a slower or quicker rate of gastric emptying (GE) than animal fats, we evaluated the effect of animal butter and vegetable soybean oil on solid-phase GE in patients with functional dyspepsia. METHODS: Twenty-seven patients with functional dyspepsia were enrolled in this study. Radionuclide-labeled solid meals were used to evaluate GE. A study meal was composed of 206.8 kcal to 9.2 g protein, 45 g carbohydrate, and 10 g fat (formula 1, with animal butter: 26.2% saturated palmitic acid, 29.1% unsaturated oleic acid, 3.5% linoleic acid, and 0

Endoplasmic reticulum stress enhances unsaturated fatty acid-induced hepatocyte injury in human pluripotent stem cell-derived hepatic culture.

BACKGROUND: The liver is a central organ involved in lipid metabolism. Hepatocytes synthesize fatty acids and triglycerides under conditions of excess energy while decomposing fats by β-oxidation under conditions of energy deficiency. When fatty acid metabolism is impaired due to metabolic syndrome, excessive lipid accumulation in the liver increases the risk of fatty liver disease, chronic hepatitis, and liver cancer. Excessive fat accumulation causes various types of cell damage, such as oxidative stress, which causes lipotoxicity. There is a difference in lipotoxicity between saturated and

The effect of production level on feed intake, milk yield, and endocrine responses to two fatty acid supplements in lactating cows.

Animal responses to dietary treatment may interact with metabolic state, which differs for cows across a wide range of milk yield. Responses to dietary saturated vs. unsaturated fatty acid (FA) supplement was evaluated using 32 multiparous Holstein cows arranged in a crossover design with 14-d periods. Treatments were 2.5% FA from unsaturated FA (calcium salts of palm FA) or saturated FA (prilled, hydrogenated free FA). Unsaturated FA treatments decreased dry matter intake (0.8 kg/d) and time spent ruminating (25 min/d) compared with saturated FA treatment. Treatments did not differ in milk or

Influence of dietary components on the gut microbiota of middle-aged adults: the gut-Mediterranean connection.

BACKGROUND: A plant-focused, healthy dietary pattern, such as the Mediterranean diet enriched with dietary fiber, polyphenols, and polyunsaturated fats, is well known to positively influence the gut microbiota. Conversely, a processed diet high in saturated fats and sugars negatively impacts gut diversity, potentially leading to weight gain, insulin resistance, and chronic, low-grade inflammation. Despite this understanding, the mechanisms by which the Mediterranean diet impacts the gut microbiota and its associated health benefits remain unclear. METHODS: This retrospective, observational st

The impact of high fat diets on physiological changes in euthyroid and thyroid altered rats.

The association of adverse health with high fat intake has long been recognized. However, the lack of research focusing on the interrelationship of thyroid and liver function, and the pathogenesis of a high fat diet leaves these topics poorly understood. The objective of this study was to evaluate and compare the physiological changes in euthyroid and thyroid altered animal model fed saturated and unsaturated high fat diets. To achieve this objective adult male Sprague Dawley rats (n = 100) were fed one of five diets; a control or one of four test diets containing 25% saturated or unsaturated,

Smokers--vitamin C--hypercholesterolaemia.

Cigarette smoking is one of the major public health problems of our times. Smokers are damaged by free radicals formed during smoking. The antioxidant capacity of smokers is reduced. Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) deficiency in heavy smokers with a total cholesterol more than 6.7 mmol/l ranges from 35-55%. It is mediated by smoking, by its low dietary intake by preferential high dietary intake of saturated and unsaturated fats. Vitamin C is an important water soluble antioxidant, therefore its intake can at least partially reduce the unfavourable effect of smoking caused by the attack of free radic

Medium chain triglycerides (MCT) formulas in paediatric and allergological practice.

Fats constitute the most significant nutritional source of energy. Their proper use by the body conditions a number of complex mechanisms of digestion, absorption, distribution, and metabolism. These mechanisms are facilitated by fats made of medium chain fatty acids; therefore, they are an easy and quick source of energy. Thus, an increased supply of medium chain triglycerides (MCT) is particularly important in patients with disturbances of digestion and absorption such as disturbed bile secretion, classic coeliac disease, short bowel syndrome, inflammatory diseases of the intestines, disturb

Fatty Acid Profile and Hazard Index of Ready-to-Eat Foods Available in the Market: A Risk Survey.

BACKGROUND: Dietary fat is of necessary macronutrients for body health. According to the guidelines, up to 10% of calories can be supplied by saturated fat. Moreover, intake of trans fats should be reduced up to zero, if possible. Owing to the increasing share of ready-to-eat foods in the daily basket, we aimed to analyze these types of foods to determine their fatty acid profile, and the hazard indices of atherogenicity and thrombogenicity. METHODS: Four types of industrial and seven types of retail ready-to-eat foods were purchased from local markets. The fatty acid profile was determined u

Resolution-Oriented Immunopharmacological Potential of the Lipid Matrix of Rhynchophorus palmarum Larvae in Viral Respiratory Infections: A Perspective Review.

This review explores how the fatty acid (FA) profile of the Amazonian Rhynchophorus palmarum larva (Chontacuro), traditionally eaten for respiratory ailments, might biochemically mitigate viral respiratory infections. During metamorphosis, this insect utilizes its unique FA matrix to survive severe, self-inflicted oxidative and inflammatory tissue stress. The authors hypothesize that when consumed by humans, these insect lipids undergo chylomicron-mediated lymphatic transport. This pathway bypasses initial liver metabolism, delivering unsaturated FAs directly to the pulmonary microvasculature

A Healthy, Low-Carbohydrate Diet During Pregnancy Is Associated With a Reduced Risk of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus.

CONTEXT: Evidence on the associations of low-carbohydrate diet (LCD) during pregnancy with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) has been limited and inconsistent. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to prospectively evaluate the risk of GDM associated with the LCD considering the quality of macronutrients. METHODS: All participants were from a prospective cohort in Wuhan, China. The overall, healthy LCD (emphasizing low-quality carbohydrates, plant protein, and unsaturated fat), and unhealthy LCD (emphasizing high-quality carbohydrates, animal protein, and saturated fat) scores were calculated according to t

Carnitine palmitoyl transferase-I inhibition is not associated with cardiac hypertrophy in rats fed a high-fat diet.

1. Cardiac lipotoxicity is characterized by hypertrophy and contractile dysfunction and can be triggered by impaired mitochondrial fatty acid oxidation and lipid accumulation. The present study investigated the effect of dietary fatty acid intake alone and in combination with inhibition of mitochondrial fatty acid uptake with the carnitine palmitoyl transferase (CPT)-I inhibitor oxfenicine. Long-chain fatty acids activate peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPAR), thus mRNA levels of PPAR target genes were measured. 2. Rats were untreated or given the CPT-I inhibitor oxfenicine (150 m

Bone marrow fat content in 70 adolescent girls with anorexia nervosa: Magnetic resonance imaging and magnetic resonance spectroscopy assessment.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents and women with anorexia nervosa have increased bone marrow fat and decreased bone formation, at least in part due to hormonal changes leading to preferential stem cell differentiation to adipocytes over osteoblasts. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate marrow fat content and correlate with age and disease severity using knee MRI with T1 relaxometry (T1-R) and MR spectroscopy (MRS) in 70 adolescents with anorexia nervosa. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We enrolled 70 girls with anorexia nervosa who underwent 3-T knee MRI with coronal T1-W images, T1-R and singl

Autoimmune Thyroid Disorders: The Mediterranean Diet as a Protective Choice.

Autoimmune thyroid diseases are on the rise worldwide, and such a rapid increase is mainly driven by environmental factors related to changed lifestyles in "modern" societies. In this context, diet seems to play a crucial role. An unhealthy high-energy diet, rich in animal fat and proteins, salt and refined sugars (the so-called "Western diet") negatively influences the risk of autoimmunity by altering the immune balance and the gut microbiota composition, enhancing oxidative stress and promoting inflammation. In contrast, the Mediterranean diet represents a unique model of healthy eating, cha

Trans fatty acids and lipid profile: A serious risk factor to cardiovascular disease, cancer and diabetes.

Trans Fatty acids (TFAs) have long been used in food manufacturing due in part to their melting point at room temperature between saturated and unsaturated fats. However, increasing epidemiologic and biochemical evidence suggests that excessive trans fats in the diet are a significant risk factor for cardiovascular events as well as a risk factor for cancer and diabetes. A 2% absolute increase in energy intake from trans-fat has been associated with a 23% increase in cardiovascular risk. They increase the levels of low-density lipoprotein which is bad for health. Moreover, several epidemiologi

Tropical Oil Consumption and Cardiovascular Disease: An Umbrella Review of Systematic Reviews and Meta Analyses.

The health effects of saturated fat, particularly tropical oil, on cardiovascular disease are unclear. We investigated the effect of tropical oil (palm and coconut oils), lard, and other common vegetable oils (soybean and rice bran oils) that are widely used in tropical and Asian countries on lipid profiles. We performed an umbrella review of meta-analyses and systematic reviews. Electronic databases (Medline, Scopus, Embase, and Cochrane) were searched up to December 2018 without language restriction. We identified nine meta-analyses that investigated the effect of dietary oils on lipid level
