Association between dietary antioxidant and fatty acids and low muscle mass in obese and non-obese community-dwelling older adults: An NHANES analysis.

Sarcopenia increases disability, hospital stays, readmissions, and mortality in older adults. Antioxidative nutrients and fatty acids consumption may help maintain muscle mass by reducing oxidative stress. This study aims to assess the association between antioxidant and fatty acid intake and low muscle mass in community-dwelling older people. This retrospective analysis used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 1999 to 2004. Participants ≥ 60 years with information on muscle mass measured by Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) were included. Appendicular skel

Adipocyte lipolysis activates epithelial stem cells for hair regeneration through fatty acid metabolic signaling.

Adipocytes as vital energy reservoirs respond to systemic metabolic demands by storing or releasing lipids. Whether they can promote tissue regeneration through local metabolic communication remains unclear. We found that after skin injury, macrophages quickly infiltrate dermal adipose tissue, where they promote free fatty acid release from adipocytes via serum amyloid A3-dependent lipolysis, which, in turn, promotes hair regrowth. Epithelial hair follicle stem cells (eHFSCs) absorb the released monounsaturated fatty acids via fatty acid translocase CD36 and activate the transcriptional coacti

Mediterranean diet and health: biological importance of olive oil.

Olive oil, the main fatty component of the Mediterranean diet, is characterized by consisting of monounsaturated fatty acids as well as by its elevated content in antioxidant agents. This oil exhibits numerous biological functions which are beneficial for the state of health. A diet rich in monounsaturated fatty acids provides an adequate fluidity to the biological membranes, diminishing the hazard of lipid peroxidation which affects polyunsaturated fatty acids. Moreover, the antioxidants present in olive oil are able to scavenge free radicals and afford an adequate protection against peroxida

EPA and DHA acylcarnitines are less cardiotoxic than are saturated and monounsaturated long-chain acylcarnitines.

Elevated levels of fatty acid-derived long-chain acylcarnitines are detrimental to cardiac health, primarily because of their adverse effects on mitochondrial function and key metabolic pathways in the heart. While trans-fatty acids are considered harmful and omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) are considered beneficial, the specific properties of acylcarnitines derived from these types of fatty acids are not characterized. This study aimed to compare the effects of saturated palmitoylcarnitine (PC), monounsaturated cis-oleoylcarnitine (cis-OC), trans-elaidoylcarnitine (trans-EC), and

Insights into Modifiable Risk Factors of Infertility: A Mendelian Randomization Study.

OBJECTIVE: Observational studies have linked lifestyle, diet, obesity, and biochemical measures with infertility. Whether this association is causal is unclear. We sought to identify the causal relationship between modifiable risk factors with infertility. METHODS: Using single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) as a genetic instrument variable, we carried out a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to estimate the causal effects for 22 modifiable risk factors on female infertility (6481 cases; 75,450 participants) and male infertility (680 cases; 73,479 participants). RESULTS: The r

Chemical genetic profiling and characterization of small-molecule compounds that affect the biosynthesis of unsaturated fatty acids in Candida albicans.

The balance between saturated and unsaturated fatty acids plays a crucial role in determining the membrane fluidity. In the diploid fungal pathogen Candida albicans, the gene for fatty acid Delta9 desaturase, OLE1, is essential for viability. Using a reverse genetic approach, termed the fitness test, we identified a group of structurally related synthetic compounds that induce specific hypersensitivity of the OLE1(+/-) strain. Genetic repression of OLE1 and chemical inhibition by two selected compounds, ECC145 and ECC188, resulted in a marked decrease in the total unsaturated fatty acids and i

Regulation of stearoyl-CoA desaturase activity by the trans-10,cis-12 isomer of conjugated linoleic acid in HepG2 cells.

Stearoyl-CoA desaturase (SCD) catalyzes the rate-limiting step in the cellular synthesis of monounsaturated fatty acids mainly oleate (C18:1) and palmitoleate (C16:1) which are the major monounsaturated fatty acids of membrane phospholipids, cholesterol esters, waxes, and triglycerides. Several SCD isoforms exist in the mouse whereas the human has one well-characterized SCD gene. The trans-10,cis-12 isomer of conjugated linoleic acid has been previously shown to repress the expression of the mouse SCD1 gene isomer by decreasing SCD gene expression as well as by direct inhibition of SCD enzyme

Lipidome of Endemic Fish Comephorus dybowskii (Scorpaeniformes, Comephoridae) in Lake Baikal Plays an Essential Role in Maintaining Organism Homeostasis Due to Biomembrane Modifications and Metabolic Consistency.

The lipid and fatty acid composition of the little Baikal oilfish (Comephorus dybowskii Korotneff, 1905) was studied to identify the features of its biochemical adaptation to the environmental conditions of Lake Baikal. Multivariate analysis of lipid classes and FA profiles revealed reproducible clustering patterns in both muscle tissue and whole-body samples, indicating the presence of distinct physiological states differing in membrane organization and lipid metabolism. Lipid-class variability was primarily associated with sphingomyelin, cholesterol esters, phosphatidylinositol, and lysophos

Modulation of long chain fatty acid unsaturation by dietary copper.

Research over the past 20 years into the effect of copper on fatty acid profiles in several species suggests that copper has a unique effect on long chain fatty acid metabolism. Copper supplementation in the pig and rat and copper deficiency in the rat, mouse and human indicates that inadequate copper intake (or genetic copper deficiency in the brindled mouse and in Menke's disease) impairs the ability to monounsaturate long chain saturated fatty acids and that, conversely, copper supplementation (greater than 150 mg/kg diet) usually increases monounsaturated fatty acids. Several recent studie

Intersite reliability of vertebral bone marrow lipidomics-derived lipid composition among children with varying degrees of bone fragility undergoing routine orthopedic surgery.

BACKGROUND: Lipidomics, a branch of metabolomics, is an attractive technique to characterize bone marrow lipid composition, which may be associated with skeletal acquisition and homeostasis. However, the reliability of lipidomics-derived lipid composition of the bone marrow is unknown, especially for pediatric populations with bone fragility. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the intersite reliability and standard error of measurement (SEM) of vertebral bone marrow lipid composition at the thoracic (T11/T12) and lumbar (L1/L2) spine determined by targeted lipidomics among children with
