Rapid diagnosis of pemphigus vulgaris (PV) is an important task in patient's prognosis and treatment. Although PV is routinely diagnosed through investigation of pathology specimens and direct immunofluorescence assays, Tzanck smear can be used as rapid, inexpensive, and easily used test to confirm its clinical diagnosis. Bullous pemphigoid is the most frequent autoimmune blistering disease, usually affecting elderly patients. Most cases are idiopathic. We report a case of bullous pemphigoid developing four weeks after a boiling water burn, initially at the site of the burn, then elsewhere.

A 29-year-old female patient with an autoimmune subepidermal blistering disease had linear deposits of both IgA and IgG at the basement membrane zone. IgG/IgA pemphigus has recently been described in the literature as an overlap of pemphigus vulgaris or pemphigus foliaceus with IgA pemphigus. There has also been some postulation that this IgG/IgA pemphigus may be associated with internal malignancy as well. Our case demonstrates the unique clinical, histopathological, and direct immunofluorescence findings of IgG/IgA pemphigus and further highlights the possibility of association of this disease with internal malignancy.

Infections with goose circovirus (GoCV) are associated with growth retardation and developmental problems in farmed geese. Leptospires were demonstrated by a combination of the direct fluorescent antibody technique and culture in six (4.6 per cent) of 130 fetuses from apparently normal uteri collected at an abattoir. Fetal ages ranged from the fifth to the seventh months. In addition, leptospires were isolated from the oviducts of two uteri whose fetuses were not infected. All the strains isolated were similar antigenically to serovar hardjo. Leptospiral antibodies were not detected in any of the fetuses.

A prospective study of 300 patients undergoing therapeutic termination of pregnancy was conducted. A Papanicolaou smear was obtained and a clinical evaluation of the cervix was made. Specimens from the cervix were examined by both direct fluorescent antibody and culture techniques for the presence of Chlamydia trachomatis.
