Forests as natural metamaterial barriers for urban railway-induced vibration attenuation.

Noise and vibrations generated by railway traffic can seriously affect the adjacent buildings and their residents. Different mitigation methods have been proposed in the past decades to tackle this challenge. Despite many mitigation measures presented in the literature, some of these measures have shown limitations in their application, while for others their carbon footprint does not justify their implementation in real projects. This study introduces the concept of forests as natural metamaterials to attenuate the vibrations generated at the wheel-rail interaction. In particular, a group of

Understanding mercury accumulation in mosses of two subalpine forests in China.

The role of forest ecosystems in the global mercury (Hg) biogeochemical cycle is widely recognized; however, using litterfall as a surrogate to assess the Hg sink function of forests encounters limitations. We investigated the accumulation characteristics and influencing factors of Hg in mosses from two remote subalpine forests in southwestern China. The results indicated that there was high Hg accumulation in subalpine forest mosses, with average concentrations of 82 ± 49 ng g-1 for total mercury (THg) and 1.3 ± 0.8 ng g-1 for methylmercury (MeHg). We demonstrated that the accumulation capaci

Puumala Orthohantavirus Reassortant Genome Variants Likely Emerging in the Watershed Forests.

Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) remains a prevalent zoonosis in the Republic of Tatarstan (RT), Russian Federation. Puumala orthohantavirus (PUUV), carried by bank voles (Myodes glareolus), is the principal zoonotic pathogen of HFRS in the RT. In this study, we sought to demonstrate the similarity of the PUUV genetic sequences detected in HFRS case patients and bank vole samples previously collected in some areas of the RT. Furthermore, we intended to identify the reassortant PUUV genomes and locate a potential site for their emergence. During 2019 outbreaks, the PUUV genome seque

Integrating random forests and propagation models for high-resolution noise mapping.

The adverse effects of long-term exposure to environmental noise on human health are of increasing concern. Noise mapping methods such as spatial interpolation and land use regression cannot capture complex relationships between environmental conditions and noise propagation or attenuation in a three-dimension (3D) built environment. In this study, we developed a hybrid approach by combining a traffic propagation model and random forests (RF) machine learning algorithm to map the total environment noise levels for daily average, daytime, nighttime, and day-evening-nighttime at 30 m × 30 m reso

Screening large-scale association study data: exploiting interactions using random forests.

BACKGROUND: Genome-wide association studies for complex diseases will produce genotypes on hundreds of thousands of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). A logical first approach to dealing with massive numbers of SNPs is to use some test to screen the SNPs, retaining only those that meet some criterion for further study. For example, SNPs can be ranked by p-value, and those with the lowest p-values retained. When SNPs have large interaction effects but small marginal effects in a population, they are unlikely to be retained when univariate tests are used for screening. However, model-based

Richness and biogeography of Pteridoflora in montane forests of eastern Mexico.

This study compiles and updates the checklist of ferns and lycophytes from the Sierra Madre Oriental (SMOR), Mexico. We analyzed the distribution and richness of these groups of seedless vascular plants to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the data. We reviewed information on these taxa from regional floristic studies, field explorations, and herbarium specimens. Our updated list includes 567 species, of which 511 are ferns and 56 lycophytes, organized into 37 families and 137 genera. The five most species-rich families are Pteridaceae (131), Polypodiaceae (76), Dryopteridaceae (68), Aspl

Divergent Temporal Trends in Carbon Assimilation-Growth Coupling Across Global Forests.

Understanding how trees allocate assimilated carbon to growth is essential for projecting forest carbon sequestration. However, the temporal dynamics of the relative roles of carbon assimilation (source) versus cambial activity (sink) in regulating tree growth remain poorly understood. Using multiple gross and net primary productivity (GPP and NPP) data and tree-ring width records from 2126 sites worldwide, we quantified the temporal trend of the correlation between carbon assimilation and tree growth (R trend) over the past three decades. We found that the R trend varied substantially across

Seasonal Variation of Butterfly Diversity in Subtropical Urban Forests of Nepal.

Butterflies exhibit seasonal dynamics in diversity and population in response to bioclimatic factors. However, their seasonal diversity remains poorly understood in urban landscapes. Therefore, we examined how butterfly diversity varies across seasons in the urban forests of Pokhara City, located in Nepal's subtropical region. We selected three urban forests-Banpale, Bhadrakali, and Shanti Ban Batika-to sample butterflies. We employed the Pollard Walk Survey method to collect data across all four seasons and analyzed various diversity indices, community composition, and indicator species. We a

Plant diversity modifies multi-trophic interactions in croplands, grasslands and forests.

Multitrophic interactions can strongly influence the structure and functioning of ecosystems, but how plant diversity influences the direction and predictability of multitrophic interactions across agricultural and natural ecosystems remains unclear. Using 149 field studies across five continents, we found that, on average, increasing plant diversity tended to exert differential top-down and bottom-up effects in croplands versus grasslands and forests. Organic and nonorganic croplands exhibited 846 and 148% higher invertebrate natural enemy-to-herbivore abundance ratios under increased plant d

Shifting growth-climate limitations in Canadian forests under recent climate change.

INTRODUCTION: Although the etiology of osteoporosis is different between men and women, the underlying pathophysiological mechanism is similar, namely an absolute or relative increase in bone resorption, leading to progressive bone loss. Transforming growth factor (TGF)-beta1 is a growth factor in human bone, which is produced by osteoblasts, and which has various effects on osteoclasts and osteoblasts. The aim of our study was to determine serum TGF-beta1 levels in male patients with idiopathic osteoporosis. METHODS: Twenty five males with idiopathic osteoporosis and 25 age-matched controls

Unprecedented Warming and Increased Herbivory Drive Collapse of Japan's Kelp Forests.

Kelp forests underpin entire ecosystems and provide key services for human society, yet are threatened by anthropogenic stressors, most notably ocean warming and overgrazing. While Japanese kelp forests have substantial historical and cultural value, responses to recent environmental change remain poorly resolved. Here, we assessed how recent Kuroshio-associated warming and increased herbivory were linked to kelp forest collapse across approximately 200 km of the Izu Peninsula (central-eastern Japan). We combined 40 years of in situ kelp biomass (1980-2024) and 12-14 years of canopy-cover reco

Few and Different: Detecting Examinees With Preknowledge Using Extended Isolation Forests.

Item preknowledge refers to the case where examinees have advanced knowledge of test material prior to taking the examination. When examinees have item preknowledge, the scores that result from those item responses are not true reflections of the examinee's proficiency. Further, this contamination in the data also has an impact on the item parameter estimates and therefore has an impact on scores for all examinees, regardless of whether they had prior knowledge. To ensure the validity of test scores, it is essential to identify both issues: compromised items (CIs) and examinees with preknowled

Aboveground biomass in Australian tropical forests now a net carbon source.

Tropical forests act as important global carbon sinks1, and Earth System Models predict increasing near-term carbon sink capacity for these forests, with elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration thought to stimulate tree growth2,3. However, current forest inventory data analyses suggest that the carbon sink capacity of intact tropical forests may be in decline, portending a possible future switch from carbon sinks to carbon sources3-7. Here we use long-term forest inventory data (1971-2019) from Australian moist tropical forests and a causal inference framework8-10 to assess the carbo

High resilience of Pacific Island forests to a category- 5 cyclone.

Assessing how forests respond to, and recuperate from, cyclones is critical to understanding forest dynamics and planning for the impacts of climate change. Projected increases in the intensity and frequency of severe cyclones can threaten both forests and forest-dependent communities. The Pacific Islands are subject to frequent low-intensity cyclones, but there is little information on the effects of high intensity cyclones, or on how forest stewardship practices may affect outcomes. We assess the resistance and resilience of forests in three community-stewarded sites on the island of Tanna,

Wild bird parasites in the Atlantic Forest: diversity and prevalence across forested and anthropogenic landscapes.

Wild birds are important for public health, as they have epidemiological characteristics that make them host species for the transmission and maintenance of several pathogens, either as reservoirs or by the dispersal of infected arthropod vectors. Recently, several bird species have been used as model organisms in several scientific studies. Investigations have used wild bird populations as bioindicators and sentinels to identify changes in habitat quality, exposure to chemical pollutants, and disease surveillance. The objective of this study was to investigate the prevalence and diversity of

Continental mapping of forest ecosystem functions reveals a high but unrealised potential for forest multifunctionality.

Humans require multiple services from ecosystems, but it is largely unknown whether trade-offs between ecosystem functions prevent the realisation of high ecosystem multifunctionality across spatial scales. Here, we combined a comprehensive dataset (28 ecosystem functions measured on 209 forest plots) with a forest inventory dataset (105,316 plots) to extrapolate and map relationships between various ecosystem multifunctionality measures across Europe. These multifunctionality measures reflected different management objectives, related to timber production, climate regulation and biodiversity

Forest cover influences the fecal virome of Oligoryzomys nigripes in Atlantic Forest remnants, Brazil.

Landscape changes driven by human activities can alter host-pathogen interactions, favoring generalist mammal species that act as reservoirs for zoonotic pathogens, potentially leading to spillover events and outbreaks. Here, we investigated how forest cover influences viral diversity in Oligoryzomys nigripes, a generalist rodent known to harbor zoonotic viruses in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. We employed high-throughput sequencing to explore the fecal virome of 20 specimens collected across three landscapes with varying forest cover (20 %, 40 %, and 60 %) within Atlantic Forest fragments in

The positive compound leaf-drought association is shrub-specific in Chinese forests.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The classic hypothesis that compound leaves are associated with drought has largely treated all woody plants as a single functional group, overlooking potential ecological divergence among shrubs, trees, and lianas. METHODS: Using 2,727 species across 63 forest plots in China, we quantified compound-leaf proportion within shrubs, trees, and lianas, respectively, and assessed their climatic associations, and employed PLS-SEM to disentangle direct and indirect pathways of drought influence. KEY RESULTS: Compound-leaf distribution differed markedly among life forms. The shr
