We report a case of intravenous catheter-associated fungemia caused by Candida rugosa; this is the first report of such an infection in a human. Multiple cultures of blood taken over a 24-h period and of the intravenous catheter tip were positive for this unusual isolate. The patient was treated with intravenous amphotericin B and made an uneventful recovery. Intravenous cannulae and other intravascular devices are well recognized as potential sites of intravascular infection by a variety of microorganisms, including several Candida species; however, fungemia caused by C. rugosa has not been r

BACKGROUND: Fungemia due to uncommon fungi and secondary to multiple risk factors has become an emergent health problem, particularly in oncology patients.
AIMS: This study shows the following data collected during an 11-year period in a tertiary care oncologic center from patients with fungemia: demographic data, clinical characteristics, and outcome.
METHODS: A retrospective study was performed at Instituto Nacional de Cancerología, a 135-bed referral cancer center in Mexico City, from July 2012 to June 2023. All episodes of non-Candida fungemia were included.
RESULTS: Sixteen cases with

AIM/PURPOSE: Bloodstream candida infections can seed the eye via hematogenous spread and result in chorioretinitis or endophthalmitis. If undetected and untreated, this can result in permanent vision loss. Past studies evaluating incidence of ocular candidiasis among hospitalized patients with positive fungal blood cultures have demonstrated variable rates of occurrence, but recent studies have generally shown a lower incidence than was reported several decades ago. Given low rates of occurrence, the utility of screening patients with dilated fundus exams has been called into question. The pri

Disseminated cases of histoplasmosis in acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) are rarely reported from India. Most of these cases report isolation of this fungus from the bone marrow, lymph node aspirate, spleenic aspirate, and biopsies. We report isolation of Histoplasma capsulatum from the blood of an AIDS patient. A 30-year-old male from Utter Pradesh was admitted with fever, loss of appetite, and nausea since two months. Few intracellular and extracellular budding cells were observed on bone marrow examination on the fifth day of admission. Diagnosis was confirmed by blood cultures ta

BACKGROUND: The incidence of fungi like pathogens in hospitals varies by regions.
OBJECTIVES: Our goal was not only to record the incidence and etiology of fungaemia, but also the change during the 4 years analysed, to determine the time of detection in automated blood culture and by lysis-centrifugation, and finally to assess the gender, age and underlying disease of the patients with fungaemia.
METHODS: An observational multicentre study of fungaemia was conducted in hospitals in the Mycology Network of Buenos Aires.
RESULTS: A total of 190,920 blood cultures were processed: 182,050 autom

Forty-nine episodes of bacteremia and fungemia occurred in 38 of 336 patients with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome seen at our institution since 1980. There were five types of infections. Infections commonly associated with a T-cell immunodeficiency disorder comprised 16 episodes and included those with Salmonella species, Listeria monocytogenes, Cryptococcus neoformans, and Histoplasma capsulatum. Infections commonly associated with a B-cell immunodeficiency disorder included those with Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae. Infections occurring with neutropenia were caus

A 64-year-old woman presented with retroperitoneal lymphoma metastatic to the left ureter. Lymphoma was not diagnosed and her clinical course was not fully explained until after surgery. The lack of superficial lymphoma delayed diagnosis and therefore prevented effective treatment. Her situation became unmanageable when it was complicated by bacteremia (E coli) and fungemia (Candida albicans).

Ten episodes of Torulopsis glabrata fungemia occurring in nine patients with terminal illnesses are described. Eight patients had underlying malignancies and one patient had a plastic anemia. Two episodes of fungemia were considered transient since they were clearly related to the administration of intravenous hyperalimentation (IVH). Most patients were adult women and had solid tumors of the genitourinary tract. Contributory factors were: antibiotic therapy (100%), immunosuppressive drugs (75%), abdominal surgery (63%), IVH (50%), neutropenia (38%), and diabetes mellitus (13%). The clinical c

Community-acquired fungemia in immunocompetent hosts remains exceptionally rare. Kodamaea ohmeri is an emerging opportunistic yeast pathogen increasingly recognised as a cause of invasive fungal infections, particularly among immunocompromised individuals and in healthcare settings. A 33-year-old previously healthy female farmer presented with severe leptospirosis with multiorgan dysfunction. Blood cultures obtained before central venous catheter insertion grew K. ohmeri, identified by the VITEK 2 YST card and matrix-assisted laser desorption ionisation-time of flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrom

INTRODUCTION: Coccidioidomycosis is most often an asymptomatic or mild self-limited respiratory infection, but in rare cases it can become disseminated and cause severe disease.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 29-year-old man who was originally from Thailand and had been living in Arizona for 2 years presented with intermittent fevers, fatigue, and other nonspecific symptoms, including abdominal pain, nonbloody diarrhea, and pruritic rash. Initial laboratory values showed significant peripheral eosinophilia. Extensive evaluation revealed possible Strongyloides species infection. Shortly after, Coccidioi

BACKGROUND: An intracardiac foreign body causing recurrent fungemia is a rare clinical situation. Clinicians should be that aware of rare sources of sepsis despite a thorough history and examination.
RESULTS: The authors describe a 63 year-old man, with unremarkable past medical history, who presented with a fever for 2 weeks. Blood cultures persistently grew Candida albicans and Streptococcus constellatus. Echocardiogram assessment showed a suspected vegetation over the tricuspid valve. Surgical exploration with median sternotomy and cardiopulmonary bypass revealed a tooth-pick impacted with

In this article, we describe the first outbreak of Candida parapsilosis fungemia in our hospital. We examined a cluster of four nosocomial cases of C. parapsilosis fungemia that occurred in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of the Affiliated Xingtai People's Hospital of Hebei Medical University over a two-week period. We ascertained patient parameters including clinical characteristics, blood and sputum cultures, and drug sensitivity test results. Cultures from eight blood samples obtained from the four infected preterm infants showed identical characteristics and were identified as C. p

Pancreatic necrosis infection is the most common complication affecting mortality of severe acute pancreatitis (death rate 80%). Bacterial infections particularly with coliforms or anaerobes account for the majority of cases of infected necrosis. Fungal pancreatic infections with Candida species are rare and often nosocomial. We report herein the first case of pancreatic necrosis infection with Candida parapsilosis associated with fungemia confirmed by molecular typing.

Trichosporon species are emerging opportunistic pathogens capable of causing a spectrum of disease, from superficial skin infections to deep-seated, disseminated, and life-threatening infections. These infections are often challenging to diagnose due to their rarity, frequent misidentification as Candida , and intrinsic resistance to conventional antifungal therapies, resulting in delays in appropriate management. We report a case series of Trichosporon fungemia in six critically ill patients, highlighting varied clinical presentations. Common comorbidities included diabetes mellitus, hyperten

Prevalence of emerging fungal infections is increasing, particularly among immunocompromised persons, children, and older persons. We report 108 cases of Scheffersomyces spartinae infection in pediatric patients from Karachi and other cities in Pakistan, of which 107 were identified from blood cultures. Cultures were initially misidentified as Clavispora lusitaniae by a biochemical assay before speciation as S. spartinae by whole-genome sequencing. All isolates were from children <12 years of age, and >69% were from children <1 month of age. Isolates were genetically distinct across regions of

BACKGROUND: Coccidioides fungemia is an uncommon but severe manifestation of disseminated coccidioidomycosis, associated with high mortality. Despite high endemicity in California's San Joaquin Valley, recent data from this region are limited. This study aims to describe the clinical characteristics, risk factors, and outcomes of patients with Coccidioides fungemia at a Central California tertiary care center.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of patients diagnosed with Coccidioides fungemia between 2015 and 2025 at Community Regional Medical Centers (CRMC) in Fresno, California. D

BACKGROUND: Aspergillus fungemia is encountered infrequently in clinical practice, even in the setting of invasive and disseminated disease. Prolonged Aspergillus fungemia secondary to a central venous catheter is notably rarer.
METHODS: We describe the case of a 13-year-old boy with Aspergillus fungemia in the setting of a central venous catheter who was found to have pulmonary aspergillosis upon evaluation. We reviewed the literature for published cases of catheter-related Aspergillus fungemia and summarized the findings. We also sought to differentiate true fungemia from pseudofungemia and
