Colonization dynamics of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Enterobacterales in the gut of Malawian adults.

Drug-resistant bacteria of the order Enterobacterales which produce extended-spectrum beta-lactamase enzymes (ESBL-Enterobacterales, ESBL-E) are global priority pathogens. Antimicrobial stewardship interventions proposed to curb their spread include shorter courses of antimicrobials to reduce selection pressure but individual-level acquisition and selection dynamics are poorly understood. We sampled stool of 425 adults (aged 16-76 years) in Blantyre, Malawi, over 6 months and used multistate modelling and whole-genome sequencing to understand colonization dynamics of ESBL-E. Models suggest a p

Specific Chicken Egg Yolk Antibody Improves the Protective Response against Gallibacterium anatis Infection.

Gallibacterium anatis is a pathogen associated with peritonitis and salpingitis in chickens and other avian species. Novel safety prevention strategies are urgently needed because of widespread multidrug resistance and antigenic diversity. The objective of this study was to produce a specific chicken egg yolk antibody and evaluate its protective response against a G. anatis infection model in 4-week-old chicks. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays showed that hens immunized with the recombinant N terminus of Gallibacterium toxin A (GtxA-N) had significantly increased antibody titers against GtxA

High prevalence and diversity of extended-spectrum β-lactamase and emergence of OXA-48 producing Enterobacterales in wildlife in Catalonia.

Most of the studies focused on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) performed in wildlife describe Escherichia coli as the principal indicator of the selective pressure. In the present study, several species of Enterobacterales with a large panel of cephalosporin resistant (CR) genes have been isolated from wildlife in Catalonia. A total of 307 wild animals were examined to determine the prevalence of CR enterobacteria, AMR phenotypes and the presence of common carbapenem and CR genes. The overall prevalence of CR-phenotype was 13% (40/307): 17.3% in wild mammals (18/104) and 11.5% in wild birds (22

Rapid on-site monitoring of Legionella pneumophila in cooling tower water using a portable microfluidic system.

Legionnaires' disease, predominantly caused by the bacterium Legionella pneumophila, has increased in prevalence worldwide. The most common mode of transmission of Legionella is inhalation of contaminated aerosols, such as those generated by cooling towers. Simple, rapid and accurate methods to enumerate L. pneumophila are required to prevent the spread of this organism. Here, we applied a microfluidic device for on-chip fluorescent staining and semi-automated counting of L. pneumophila in cooling tower water. We also constructed a portable system for rapid on-site monitoring and used it to en

Postinfective bowel dysfunction following Campylobacter enteritis is characterised by reduced microbiota diversity and impaired microbiota recovery.

The microbiota changes were linked with diet; higher fibre consumption being associated with lower levels of Gammaproteobacteria. CONCLUSION: The microbiota of PI-BD patients appeared more disturbed by the initial infection compared with the micro …

A comprehensive review of Candida spp./bacteria interactions within polymicrobial biofilms: resistance and therapeutic strategies.

Fungal infections are mainly caused by opportunistic species of the Candida genus. These yeasts can form polymicrobial biofilms with bacteria on living or inert surfaces, including medical devices. The synergistic or antagonistic interactions within these biofilms promote virulence and resistance to antimicrobials as well as to the host's immune defenses. In response to this resistance, considerable efforts are being made to limit treatment failures. The use of antifungal-antibiotic-natural compound combinations, as well as the modification of medical device surfaces, offer promising solutions

Comparative Genomic Analysis of the Human Pathogen Wohlfahrtiimonas Chitiniclastica Provides Insight Into the Identification of Antimicrobial Resistance Genotypes and Potential Virulence Traits.

Recent studies suggest that Wohlfahrtiimonas chitiniclastica may be the cause of several diseases in humans including sepsis and bacteremia making the bacterium as a previously underappreciated human pathogen. However, very little is known about the pathogenicity and genetic potential of W. chitiniclastica; therefore, it is necessary to conduct systematic studies to gain a deeper understanding of its virulence characteristics and treatment options. In this study, the entire genetic repertoire of all publicly available W. chitiniclastica genomes was examined including in silico characterization

Genomic evolution and adaptation of arthropod-associated Rickettsia.

Rickettsia species are endosymbionts hosted by arthropods and are known to cause mild to fatal diseases in humans. Here, we analyse the evolution and diversity of 34 Rickettsia species using a pangenomic meta-analysis (80 genomes/41 plasmids). Phylogenomic trees showed that Rickettsia spp. diverged into two Spotted Fever groups, a Typhus group, a Canadensis group and a Bellii group, and may have inherited their plasmids from an ancestral plasmid that persisted in some strains or may have been lost by others. The results suggested that the ancestors of Rickettsia spp. might have infected Acari

Effect of methanethiol on process performance, selectivity and diversity of sulfur-oxidizing bacteria in a dual bioreactor gas biodesulfurization system.

This study provides important new insights on how to achieve high sulfur selectivities and stable gas biodesulfurization process operation in the presence of both methanethiol and H2S in the feed gas. On the basis of previous research, we hypothesized that a dual bioreactor lineup (with an added anaerobic bioreactor) would favor sulfur-oxidizing bacteria (SOB) that yield a higher sulfur selectivity. Therefore, the focus of the present study was to enrich thiol-resistant SOB that can withstand methanethiol, the most prevalent and toxic thiol in sulfur-containing industrial off gases. In additio

Immune system stimulation by the gut symbiont Frischella perrara in the honey bee (Apis mellifera).

Gut bacteria engage in various symbiotic interactions with their host and impact gut immunity and homeostasis in different ways. In honey bees, the gut microbiota is composed of a relatively simple, but highly specialized bacterial community. One of its members, the gammaproteobacterium Frischella perrara induces the so-called scab phenotype, a dark-coloured band that develops on the epithelial surface of the pylorus. To understand the underlying host response, we analysed transcriptome changes in the pylorus in response to bacterial colonization. We find that, in contrast to the gut bacterium

Retention sites for Xylella fastidiosa in four sharpshooter vectors (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae) analyzed by scanning electron microscopy.

Xylella fastidiosa is a xylem-limited bacterium that causes citrus variegated chlorosis (CVC), Pierce's disease of grapevine, and leaf scald of coffee and plum and many other plant species. This pathogen is vectored by sharpshooter leafhoppers (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae: Cicadellinae) and resides in the insect foregut. Scanning electron microscopy was used to determine the retention sites of X. fastidiosa for the most common vector species in Brazilian citrus groves, Acrogonia citrina, Bucephalogonia xanthophis, Dilobopterus costalimai, and Oncometopia facialis. After a 48-h acquisition access p
