Two supratentorial desmoplastic gangliogliomas arising in a 15-year-old boy and a 25-year-old man are reported. Both tumors reached the brain surface and exhibited large cysts. They showed intense desmoplasia and tumor cells of astrocytic and ganglionic differentiation. In one case the ganglionic nature was only demonstrable by immunohistochemistry. Such neoplasms can no longer be regarded as exclusively infantile brain tumors.

Gangliogliomas are rare tumors of the central nervous system that are usually found in the supratentorial compartment, although cases throughout the nervous system have been described. They are generally low-grade malignancies that are amenable to cure by surgical resection. Most manifest as seizures, though, based on location, they can present with focal neurological deficits. We present here a rare case of an infratentorial ganglioglioma presenting with hemorrhage. To our knowledge this is the only reported case of a hemorrhagic ganglioglioma and, as such, we examine its possible prognosis.

A large supratentorial tumor associated with an extraparenchymatous cyst and multiloculated intraparenchymatous cysts occurred in a 14-month-old infant. This case had all the characteristic features of desmoplastic infantile ganglioglioma both clinically and histologically. The notable difference was the extraparenchymatous cyst. The extraparenchymatous cyst was probably caused by entrapment of cerebrospinal fluid in the subarachnoid space by some check-valve mechanism because the leptomeninges were commonly involved in the tumor. A similar mechanism may explain the etiology of the intraparenc

The oncologic involvement of the spinal cord in neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is not a typical feature of the disease. Here, we present a case of ganglioglioma of the spinal cord in a child with NF1 and try to define if this tumor can be considered coincidental or not. A 4-year-old boy affected by NF1 was diagnosed with a spinal cord-enhancing tumor extending from C4 to D3, with a disappearance in the T2 MRI sequences of the cerebrospinal fluid signal. The patient underwent a subtotal resection. The pathological exam revealed a ganglioglioma. To the best of our knowledge, only 1 other case of

Gangliogliomas are uncommon central nervous system (CNS) tumors composed of a mixture of glial and neuronal elements. Although these tumors can occur in any portion of the central nervous system, involvement of the ventricular system is rare. We herein report on two cases of gangliogliomas in the third ventricle in a 34-year-old woman and in a 52-year-old man. One patient presented only with headaches, and the other presented symptoms associated with panhypopituitarism and diabetes insipidus. In the first case the tumor in the middle portion of the third ventricle was successfully removed by a

Mixed tumors account for about 10% of the childhood central nervous system tumors. Studies of the most common tumor, the ganglioglioma, in patients of all ages suggest that optimal therapy is total gross resection. There are few studies on these tumors in children. In our institution between 1984 and 1993, 28 children with gangliogliomas (4 of which were anaplastic) and 4 children with dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumors were treated and followed. Fourteen had local subarachnoid involvement. Total gross resection was usually curative, regardless of histology. Subarachnoid involvement was n

A case of intra medullary ganglioglioma is reported in a 25 year old woman, who had presented an acute poliomyelitis when she was 2 years old. Since 7 years, new neurological signs occurred with spastic paraplegia, sensitive and sphincter disturbances. Cervical and lumbar myelography showed an intra medullary tumor, extending from C2-C3 to T7-T8. Macroscopically, the lesion was well circumscribed, except on the cervico-dorsal junction where it engulfed the anterior spinal artery. Histologically, the tumor was a ganglioglioma, grade I. Two years after surgery, the patient remains paraplegic. Th

BACKGROUND: Posterior fossa gangliogliomas with extension into the cerebellopontine angle are extremely rare and can be challenging to resect because they are infiltrative and the regional neurovasculature is complex.[1,2] Tumor grade may best predict oncologic outcome.[1] Histologic grading can be used to balance surgical aggression with the risk of cranial neuropathies.
CASE DESCRIPTION: During an evaluation for headaches, a 19-year-old woman was found to have a 5.3 × 4.0 × 3.5-cm left lateral cerebellar and cerebellopontine angle tumor, with an apparent intrinsic origin and significant exo

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Sacral spinal gangliogliomas, rare WHO grade I tumors, present a surgical challenge due to their proximity to critical nerve roots. Symptoms often include lower back pain, sciatica, and bladder dysfunction. Diagnosis is confirmed through MRI and biopsy, with surgical resection being the primary treatment.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 66-year-old woman presented with left lower limb pain and weakness. MRI showed an intradural lesion at the left S1 root. She underwent surgery, resulting in near-total tumor resection. Postoperatively, she was pain-free and ambulatory. Pathol

Ganglioglioma is a rare primary tumour of the central nervous system, which characteristically contain both neuronal and glial neoplastic components mainly in children and adolescents. The most common clinical presentation is refractory epilepsy. The imaging findings of ganglioglioma are obvious and varied. However, ganglioglioma with normal neuroimaging is rare. We report a 12-year-old boy presented with intractable focal epilepsy with normal CT and almost negative MRI. The epileptogenic focus was found to be located in the left posterior superior temporal gyrus by comprehensive evaluation in

BACKGROUND: Gangliogliomas are rare tumors of the central nervous system. We report two unusual cases of gangliogliomas located in the cerebellopontine angle (CPA).
POPULATION AND METHODS: The first patient was a 57-year-old woman, who presented with dizziness and harbored a non-enhanced heterogeneous mass located in the cisternal space of the CPA. A partial microsurgical removal was performed, and the pathological examination concluded a grade I ganglioglioma according to the WHO Classification. The postoperative course was uneventful without any adjuvant treatment and the 5-year imaging fol

Ganglioglioma is a rare central nervous system neoplasm representing 0.4% to 1.7% of all brain tumors and most frequently occurs in the pediatric population with an incidence of 7.6%. These tumors are usually slow-growing and well-circumscribed solid or cystic lesions. Gangliogliomatosis infrequently occurs in the frontal lobe, pineal gland, basal ganglia, hypothalamus, and optic chiasm, with very few reports of brainstem ganglioglioma. We report a case of a 35-year-old female who initially presented with headache, vertigo, ataxia, saccadic dysfunction, dysarthria, and dysmetria for several ye

INTRODUCTION: A ganglioglioma is a type of primary central nervous system low grade tumour composed of mixed populations of glial and neuroepithelial elements. They accounts for 0.4 to 2% of all intracranial tumours and appear more commonly in children and young adults. Seizures, which are the most important symptom in these tumours, improve significantly after surgical excision.
METHODS: Between 1995 and 2008, 20 patients with (12 adults and 8 children) with intracranial ganglioglioma were treated at our hospital. Clinical information obtained by chart review included sex, age at onset of sy

Gangliogliomas constitute the most frequent tumour entity in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy. The characteristic histopathological admixture of glial and neuronal elements, the focal nature and their differentiated phenotype and benign biological behaviour suggest an origin from a developmentally compromised or dysplastic precursor lesion. The present study analysed TSC1 and TSC2 genes as potential candidates involved in the pathogenesis of this intriguing neoplasm. Recent data suggest that both genes play a role in cortical differentiation and growth control. DNA sequence analysis of TSC

Long-standing intractable seizures are common manifestation of cerebral gangliogliomas. There is much controversy regarding the most appropriate surgical treatment (lesionectomy vs resection of the epileptogenic cortex with the lesion) for patients with intractable epilepsy associated with gangliogliomas. We reported 2 cases, in which the favorable seizure outcome was obtained following lesionectomy alone. (Case 1) Nine-year-old female developed attack of abnormal sensation in her left upper limb followed by motor seizure in her left limbs since 5 years old. MRI revealed hyperintense tumor in

BACKGROUND: Gangliogliomas account for 0.4% of primary brain tumors. They mainly occur in the supratentorial compartment and typically affect only children and young adults. We present an especially rare case of cerebellar ganglioglioma in an elderly patient.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 76-year-old Japanese woman presented with headache and nausea from 1 month previously. She had been diagnosed with a cerebellar tumor in her childhood, but the lesion was asymptomatic at that time, and there was no evidence of an increase in size, so it had been monitored without surgery. At the time of presentation,

Ganglioglioma (GG) is a WHO-grade 1 glioneuronal neoplasm. It is well differentiated with a slow-growing pattern and is composed of a combination of neoplastic ganglion and glial cells. Anaplastic ganglioglioma (AGG) is an extremely rare malignant variant of ganglioglioma, which is not included in the new WHO classification; however, the term is used to talk about gangliogliomas with data of malignancy. AGGs usually occur in children and young adults and are associated with high recurrence and mortality. The authors describe the case of a 62-year-old woman with AGG. She presented with cacosmia
